I have never written a review before – but wow this is needed. I attended a Wedding at The Borough Arms Hotel earlier this week and have positive and negative things to say. First impression is that the place is like a fusion between Great Granma’s house and an old seaside B&B - smelt the same – old fashioned dull and worn out decor, carpet and furnishings and everywhere you went creaked like a haunted house from an old horror movie. The outside rooms are a walk across the car park in the rain and in a poor state of repair and reminded me of my student digs of many years ago. Building to one side the Manager spoilt it for most of us. Weird completely deluded objectionable little man, elderly gentleman acting like he was welcoming us to the Burj Al Arab – falsely charming insisting on being called by his surname Mr Sheikh. He criticised his staff and took all opportunities to publically humiliate them in front of us the guests, he was very rude butting in and interrupting, poking his nose in, hovering and staring making everyone feel uncomfortable, when he entered the room the atmosphere changed and when he left it instantly lightened again. Generally the staff were good, mostly young, the odd one not that brilliant but some very hard workers. The Wedding Organiser Jenny was looking like she was ready to retire but said she was new to the job and still learning – that showed. Now for the positives as highlighted by my fellow reviewers – The food – the DJ and the Barmaid. The Chef is talented with a good crew, attractive presentation nice and hot homemade soup to die for and beef cooked to perfection followed by an excellent small plate buffet in the evening but the more interesting items soon ran out. The hotel Wedding Planner was hiding away in the office when it came to the evening formalities she left it to an under manager who hadn’t got a clue but luckily the hotel DJ Andy knew exactly what he was doing and did it all with a very slick hand and created a buzzing atmosphere. All our requests were played and his speakers and lights were amazing. The Barmaid Emma was a lovely lady who knew her job nothing too much trouble and very friendly. My final remarks are that I may go again as an invited guest to someone else’s party but would not pay to use the place for a party of my own.…
After a particulalrly traumatic experience with a different wedding venue, which ultimately ended in cancellation, our experience at the Borough Arms Hotel was in complete contrast. At the initial meeting, the owner was incredibly attentive and keen to talk us through every step of what his venue could offer, giving us a throrough tour of the hotel and its wedding facilities. We were quickly made to feel at ease. The different wedding packages were clearly presented, to avoid confusion (in stark contrast to the first venue, where everything was best described as 'muddy') and made selection easy. On the day of the wedding, the Borough Arms team all really delivered, making it extra special. The quality and presentation of the food was top-drawer and the ceremony and wedding breakfast rooms looked fantastic. The attention to detail was great - nice little finishes made the difference. The staff were polite, attentive and well presented - lots of smiles, which always helps. A lovely touch with the bottle of fizz to the bride and groom too. Highly recommend. …
We had dinner with a fairly large group, so we had pre-ordered. The food was delicious, served promptly and hot and there were gluten free options. The staff were courteous and we were made to feel very welcome.
We went to treat my mother to a Mother's Day Dinner. The staff were friendly ans accommodating, catering to our needs and dietary requirements. The portions were plentiful, the quality of the food was high and offered great value. Thank you for a lovely time, as always!
Seating in restaurant not comfortable. Beef was cut too thick&a little too fatty. Raspberry crumble was burnt underside. Service at table was good Staff were polite and helpful. Over all we had a good experience except for the issues with the food.
Reading the previous reviews... makes me think I stayed somewhere else...but no..... wish I had!! Lovely big room, king and 2 singles, clean bedding, bathroom with bath and shower..... but then........ After sitting down you realise, the room actually smells of vomit, must be the carpet.. vile!!! Room sooooo hot....took 3 hours (9pm to midnight ) to try cool it down, trying to turn radiators down, messing about with windows that dont open then when you do, it's right on the main road (someone has to be, I get that). Had a shower then realised only 1 towel for 3 people....that STANK of bleach... I wasnt using that...god knows what it was hiding!! No toiletries just half a used loo roll, and 2 of them tiny soaps that smell vile. Tried to use sink tap to fill kettle...got a load of dry toothpaste in my hand...vile.... we forgot our toothpaste so theres no chance it was ours. Bed was rock hard...im sure some would like it but it's no good to me...so that in turn meant I spent all night tossing, turning, not sleeping a wink.... then the shower was drip drip drip all night....aarrgghhh. Breakfast was an event.... woman looked and sounded and growled like she couldn't wait to see the back of you.... cheapest sausage that I'm surprised has passed food safety standards... snotty egg, dry tomatoes, wrinkled dry mushrooms, just vile. Went ask reception for some towels... cleaner stood at the desk shouted..."only 1 night".... yeah...you got it... they only change towels every 5 days...theres a sign ya know!!! Anyway...of course when I explained we only had 1 towel for 3 of us and its bleach riddled...yes...they did bring us some more.... which all passed the sniff test!!!! But the lady in the bar, guy on reception (pm), lady on reception (am) and young girl waitress at breakfast...they were all lovely and should get a pat on the back!!!!…
The Room was ideal for a workshop (spacious, light & airy) Location - very accessible, near M6 + parking. Lunch - Great quality food. Staff - Nothing was too much trouble for Mr Sheikh and his team. I will definitely be booking with them again.
Fabulous stay. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The room we stayed in was very comfortable and cosy, it was a little dated but that didn't matter to us (we had opted to have one of the more basic rooms). It was very clean, the bedding and towels were snowy white, the shower was very powerful and hot. We had an excellent cooked breakfast, the food was tasty and hot (a bonus for me as I hate food that should be hot being served warm). We used the conference room which was perfect for our needs, we had a buffet lunch which was excellent the sandwiches were fresh and tasty and there were 'proper' chips. We popped into the bar for a couple of drinks, this was a lovely area with more friendly and helpful staff. Excellent value for money. We will be back.
Went for a wedding meal was excellent and staff very polite and accommodating and made sure everyone was OK nothing was to much trouble from them the manager was excellent and friendly top service ..
Used a groupon deal for two courses and a glass of wine. The service was great and the food was lovely. The owner and staff were very attentive. Paid a little extra for hubby to have ribeye steak and extra drinks. Food was cooked to perfection and delicious. We will definitely return and have no issues in paying full price as really good value and worth every penny!
