The Borough Arms Hotel and Restaurant is one of the oldest established hotels in the Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent areas, with history dating back to 1783. The hotel is very much of the style associated with a traditional English town centre coaching inn, yet has been sensitively and subtly refined to offer the comfort and modern standards demanded by today's visitors. Independently owned and managed, the hotel retains many period features and takes great pride in offering a very personal service. As a valued guest, you may be confident that we will do our utmost to ensure your comfort, whether you are staying in one of our 40 centrally heated, en-suite rooms, visiting us for a meal in the restaurant, or using our conference and banqueting facilities.

Detailed Reviews
This review relates to the customer care aspect of the venue rather than as a guest.
The hotel has been a staple of the King Street in Newcastle since I was a child in the early 1980s and has been a hub of activity from weddings, local visitors, the Rotary Club and a bustling location in its bar for many years.
Although I've never had direct need to stay at the venue, I have always looked on it fondly as its friendly and professional staff have always been frequently seen attending to guests in the dining area overlooking the busy street. I once had occasion to lose my car keys and, in retracing my steps, was exceptionally fortunate to have found they were handed in to Reception and retained there for me to reclaim. This was 6-7 years ago.
More recently, I had need of assistance as a local neighbour. My car unfortunately suffered a screen chip to the windscreen midweek and needed repair at the weekend.
When the Autoglass representative arrived, their van was found to be too large to be driven onto the public carpark adjacent to the hotel. This present a problem as there was not many local open spaces to carry out the repair work. It was suggested to contact the hotel to use their carpark.
I called and spoke to the Director/ Owner of the hotel, Mr. A. R. Sheikh. After establishing my credentials, Mr Sheikh very kindly agreed to allow the parking near the annex to carry out the repairs, free of charge, on proviso that no glass was left and extended me the courtesy to come to visit the hotel in the meantime. I politely declined due to self isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic, however I found Mr. Sheikh to be highly professional, courteous and customer-focused as the venue's manager.
Consequently, I am pleased to recommend the hotel as a prestigious local venue that incorporates high standards and values into its ethos.

The traditional hotel, bar and restaurant that is the Borough Arms in Newcastle under Lyme I found to be a very pleasant place to stay and comes with my recommendation after an excellent value for money stay which exceeded my expectation on many levels.
The location is just on the edge of Newcastle under Lyme town centre, the hotel has its own car park and a bus route connecting Hanley Town Centre and the Stoke mainline railway station departs from an adjacent street five-minute walk away.
The warm welcome was wonderful after a long day at work.
The first floor ensuite room was a little tired in terms of its décor, the carpet was threadbare in places, the small television was a disappointment, yet the bed was comfortable with clean linen and mattress which aided a good night’s sleep, and the Wi-Fi was particularly good.
Noise from the main road was noticeable yet to be expected being in the heart of a town yet the unwelcome noise of the housekeeping staff holding a loud conference outside the room in the early morning did not assist in the wish of a lie in for me.
I did not use the bar or restaurant on this occasion, but both were being well used by the locals and residents alike and all looked good.
I enjoyed my stay at the Borough Arms and recommend in as a place to stay and I shall return.

My stay at the borough arms hotel was just wonderful, I was supplied with everything I needed included an extra heater and personally shown to my room. Mr Sheikh is a delightful man and I will definately be staying again. There is a lovely little car park and even throughout covid everything was made so easy from checking in to checking out. It’s a wonderful little hotel with great customer services and highly recommended!

I stayed at this hotel with my husband on 14/15th December due to him having an operation at North Staffs University Hospital. I have to say that from the moment we booked in we had impeccable service. Nothing was too much trouble, and all concerned went above and beyond their duty. The owner was very much hands on and always referred to you by name and took a personal interest so much so that you felt extremely welcome. We went as guests but came away as friends which was totally awesome. I would highly recommend this hotel without hesitation as we received first class service during our stay. We stayed in the annexe which was most suited to our needs and felt very safe and secure . This hotel is also walking distance from the town centre and 5 mins car/taxi to the North Staffs Hospital. All in all a most wonderful experience which was faultless.

When we arrived it looked like a nice place, went inside , looked clean . Nice gentleman on the front desk. Seemed to take him a bit to work out that only 3 out if the 5 were checking in at that time but we got there in the end. Sorry but your room are on the Top floor he tells us. So up we climb gradually getting hotter and hotter. Arrive at our rooms, mine was unlocked which is fine. I open the door and bam hit with a heatwave. No fans just a window that opens completely with the sill being kneee height or locks open at the top(see photos). Room does not look like the photo on their website( see photos) .Tv sometimes showed a picture (see photo).unit behind the bed needs updating.Bed was comfortable.the well stocked hospitality tray was just tea, coffee sugar and milk cartons.Everything is just very out of date. Tiny small bathroom that has definitely seen better days. Cracked sink (see photo) , black stuff growing in the shower, gaps near the shower unit ( see photos) toilet didn't take away even 1 piece of toilet paper let alone when you used more. Tiny gap between the toilet and shower stall to be able to walk, molding around the floor and the wall needs redoing and the gap to get into and out of the shower was Tiny. I'm not a small person but I'm not huge and it was a tight squeeze. Turned on shower , freezing cold to start with then you either got burn your skin hot or hot. It was 38° out and you just wanted a cold shower. The bar had AC and had friendly staff. Overall I wouldn't go back. The last 4 photos are what is on their website , Does not match what you get

I can’t say enough about this hotel and it’s manager and staff. This is the second time we have used them to put on a spread for us after a family funeral. Their service was faultless from start to finish. The buffet, both hot and cold was delicious and plentiful at a very reasonable price. The room was ready on arrival with crisp white table linen and staff waiting to supply tea and coffee as our guests arrived. The manager even made an effort to come and chat to us to offer his condolences. Thank you for making a difficult day more bearable.

We booked a double room so we could visit our daughter at university. We had plans in Newcastle so it made perfect sense to stay nearby. The cost of the room was really good but once we arrived there was a stale water kind of smell in reception and the whole hotel welcome was not great. We were advised someone had booked us into a twin room however this was amended immediately. We were asked if we had stayed at the hotel before and we advised we hadn't. We were then told our room was in the annexe and we needed to go left and then turn right. We came to a car park and over the car park totally not connected to the hotel are some run down looking apartments. Our room was up a metal fire escape and the end of the landing meaning anyone upstairs would need to go up the metal fire escape next to our room too. There was no hairdryer or iron in the room and facilities were so basic. The place honestly resembles motels on CSI. The annexe is accessible without entering the hotel. There are two ways onto the car park and it just didn't feel secure or inviting.
We were only there for one night and had booked breakfast which was OK limited choice on the self serve section and hardly any clean glasses for juice. The server was happy to chat at a table but not really keep on top of that section. We asked for coffee and had to remind staff we were still waiting (as were the next table) and instead of bringing a small pot we got the tiniest cups filled up and had to again request a top up ! The cooked breakfast was lovely so that's a positive but on the whole I struggle to say nice things about this hotel. I am aware there was a wedding fayre on the Sunday and the smell in reception was still there Sunday. I do not know who would chose this location for their wedding as its on a busy main road and wasn't that appealing. I don't think we would stay there again which is a shame. We try and use independent hotels where we can instead of chains but this really needs some love and attention throwing at it to improve the experience.

We celebrated my Auntys 60th birthday at the hotel at the weekend. It was brilliant. The venue was perfect and the food was delicious.
Booking the function room couldn't have been easier, I simply called and told them what I wanted and then liased with them via email. The staff were so helpful and informative and bent over backwards to ensure everything was perfect. The way they recommended we have the tables laid in bordroom style was perfect so everyone was included and could interact easily. They also let us decorate the room with balloons and banners.
Booking the event, pre-ordering the food and making amendments to the booking could not have been easier. Everything ran so smoothly.
There were 25 of us at the party and every single person loved their food. Everyone gave rave reviews of the soup starter and the roast beef dinner in particular. I personally can not wait to go back for sunday lunch. It really was delicious. All of the desserts looked great too.
My family and I were so impressed with the hotel we have decided to have upcoming family celebrations there too. Excellent.

Everything was as it should be. We all had a good time, especially the birthday girl.
It was provisionally booked well in advance for 2 dozen in a separate room. One consideration being that the person it was for uses an electric wheelchair. Confirmation of the booking with menu choices indicated a need for a high chair, there was a vegetarian choice, and gluten free. Not only was everything accommodated, but a phone call the night before, suggesting a room change proved an excellent idea. They gave us 3 tables of 10 instead of an oversize table, hence visitors from afar were able to chat, and catch up more easily.
We enjoyed the food. The service was as it should be. The hotel happily accommodated a request for a cake table and plinth. They subsequently cut up the cake for us.
I suspect there were 3 other parties of around 20 in the hotel at the same time. It didn’t affect us. Incidentally being a Sunday Lunch Party, there was free parking next door.
There was a gentleman, who liaised with us on behalf of the hotel. He was both totally professional, yet a very pleasant person to talk to.
There was also a young girl in the bar who was very helpful to the birthday girl.
The Borough Arms was chosen for geographical reasons. But in fact it proved to have been the correct choice for all the reasons involved in choosing a venue for a ‘Do’.
We would use it again.

Wow.
What an amazing hotel. We would just like to say a big thank you for making our day that little bit more special.
From the moment I checked in on the evening before my wedding celebration you went out of your way to make everything perfect, looking after myself and also many family members that were staying overnight too at the hotel.
I stayed in n the bridal suite and the room was just amazing with the most comfortable bed ever and the best bath in the world (my 5year old daughters words, not mine).
Nothing was to much trouble and Lara and Phil certainly went out of there way to make sure every detail was spot on. Lara was also there during our celebration overlooking everything to make sure our day went without a hitch.
All of the staff were so helpful and friendly and Mr shiekh the owner made sure that everything was taken care of, even leaving us a bottle of bubbly and a lovely card in our suite as a gift.
The food and service were absolutely amazing and our wedding breakfast was delicious. Every guest we spoke to complimented the food and service too.
The room was dressed perfectly too and just blew me away, thank you to Kirsty the Hotels resident venue dresser.
The disco in the evening was brilliant and kept my guests dancing right until the end. The buffet was also delicious with plenty of food which was regularly replenished through the evening.
I would highly recommend anyone to hold there wedding celebration with yourselves.
We will certainly be returning to enjoy a meal in your beautiful Ostler Restaurant one day.
Once again thank you so much for making our day just so amazing.
