Where to start...... step through the door into a warm, welcoming and beautifully decorated hall complete with glowing fire. A warm and friendly welcome on arrival and our cases taken to our rooms. The lounges, bar & restaurant had lovely Christmas decorations giving a warm and homely feel. A train full of satsumas plus dishes of nuts and chocolates everywhere to be enjoyed by all. Our rooms were warm, comfortable and clean. Hand sanitizer was placed on tables all round and all felt as safe as it was possible to be during the ongoing Covid crisis. The food was exceptional thanks to the Chef and all the team. Service first class. Pleasant and cheerful staff, who worked so hard in all departments despite the hotel being short of staff. Santa visited during the night then stayed to serve us Bucks Fizz on Christmas morning. We felt looked after from start to finish. Thank you and Happy New Year to all the kitchen, bar, restaurant, bedroom, back office and reception staff. Looking forward to visiting again in 2022.

We have just spent the most wonderful Christmas at this gorgeous hotel. The decor is lovely with special attention to detail. The bedrooms are spotless and comfortable if a little dated. The food was sumptuous and beautifully presented. Meal service was first class. There was real team spirit here and all the staff went out of there way to deliver a great time for all guests. We left as friends. This is a beautifully situated hotel with a special history. The modern mid century interiors are delightful. But it is the manager and his staff that make this lovely hotel great and we can't wait to return.

Hotel is in a great location not far from bowness on windermere, decor downstairs is great (very quirky). Hotel rooms are a bit dated but the deluxe double we had was large and bathroom was nice and the bed was comfortable. Staff were mostly friendly, polite and welcoming except for one who let the team down, the barman was quite rude and seemed to roll his eyes when a drinks order was made like he didn't want to be there or do his job. Breakfast was good with a decent amount of choice on the cooked menu and cereals, fruit and juices all available on the continental. Overall was a good experience would definitely return just one staff member needs some customer service training!

Large, comfortable room. However our superior deluxe room was on the third floor. There is not a lift and two ladies, both in their late sixties and one with a back problem were left to carry cases and bags up three flights of stairs. It would have been nice if the young gentleman in reception had offered to assist. We were also somewhat perplexed to find that the second , cheaper, room we had booked had two large single beds forming a very large double whereas we had two small singles. I don’t think floor space, an empty mini fridge and two large crystal water glasses justifies £40 extra per night. While the food was good it was not the menu we expected . We had checked on the website prior to booking and believed that we both would find dishes to suit our taste and needs however this was not the case. The decor is fresh but a bit heavy on the Beatrix Potter influence for our taste. The gardens are pleasant and ideal for an afternoon cocktail. The staff were generally pleasant and helpful though one of the more senior members of the restaurant /bar staff could learn from their younger colleagues.

Communal areas of the hotel are amazing - all Beatrice Potter themed and they really have put a lot of effort into it. The rooms really do need attention though - our bathroom and carpet appeared to be newish, but everything else was extremely old and dated. Had to request a hairdryer as ours were broken; they had replaced the iron and board but not removed the old ones, as they were fixed to the wall; windows really needed a deep clean (large velux window in the room and when we opened it, a lot of debris fell in); and the mattress really does need replacing. We knew the rooms were modern so expected them to be dated, but for the price we did expect the standard to be higher. Breakfast was really nice - hearty portions to set you up for a day of hiking and they’re accommodating with requests for variations. We weren’t able to book for dinner as every night we stayed (3 nights) they had events on which was slightly annoying. We found this to be particularly annoying when they were clearly understaffed so in the evenings you had to find someone to serve at the bar and in the morning, the tables were all littered with glasses and food plates from the night before, which wasn’t great (nor did it smell great!). Everywhere we ate or drank in Lake District said they were struggling with lack of staff so I think Lindeth Howe need to make a decision - do they want to host events at the cost of reducing their customer care for the paying hotel guests; or focus solely on the hotel guests who would inevitably spend far more in the restaurant and bar then they are currently, as they can’t get a table/get served. Bar is well stocked and reasonably priced. Great gin and whisky selections on offer. On check in we weren’t really given any information for example, that the front door is locked at night and you don’t need to panic, your room key will open it! Would have been nice to have had a brief tour, be given taxi numbers, asked if we wanted any recommendations for restaurants, walks etc. You’re just left to your own devices which you expect from a large hotel, I did expect a more personal touch. There was an issue with the fire alarm going off on our second night (1am until 3am!) during which time everyone had to stand outside in the freezing cold. There was no fire, just a fault with the alarm but the poor waitress (who sleeps on the grounds) was left by herself as the only person on site, no sight of the managers or owners at any point. No head count, one of the guests called the fire brigade as we had no idea at that stage whether there was a fire or not, no update or communication while we waited outside and most importantly, no explanation in the morning - no one mentioned it! I expected even just a note under the door to apologise for the inconvenience or just a friendly “sorry about last night” but instead, the young lady who was up until 4am sorting the issue by herself was there with a huge smile on her face (and very tired eyes!) serving us breakfast at 8am. All in all - a lovely hotel which is in a great location, but the owners/manager really need to be much more present.
