everywhere was immaculately clean and it was evident that measures were in place to deal with the covid crisis
the food was excellent; the staff in the dining room went to great lengths to arrange tables for our party of 8 in a smaller separate area the service throughout the meal was patient and faultless despite the demands of 4 young children|
the downstairs areas were beautifully decorated and so relaxing
the location of the hotel was excellent - right in the centre of the town
parking was nearby and very easy
However, I feel I could not give it five stars which overall it probably deserved. My room, 105, was rather small and the bed was the smallest double I have ever seen!!!
I checked at reception and was assured it was a standard double. It just seemed rather inappropriate in such a luxurious, comfortable hotel. The bathroom was wonderful and had clearly been refurbished to a very high standard.
On the first night of our stay my daughter and grandchild were given a room which really was unacceptable; there was unbearable noise from some sort of fan and absolutely no view whatsoever. They were moved for the second night.
I feel that the prices of these rooms did not reflect the rather dated and less than acceptable standards.
Hotel well located for the town and other pubs/restaurants if needed. Our room was at the back of the hotel, there was a little noise outside in the early hours but guess you can get that in any large town, it didn't keep us awake though.
We ate in the bar62 restaurant and the meal was excellent and very good value for money, also treated ourselves to a couple of cocktails each too!! Would definitely recommend.
Only slight downside was that the postcode for the car-park was the bus station but we called the hotel and they advised, maybe some signage on a wall with an arrow would be of help?
All the staff helpful and friendly. Thank you for a lovely overnight stay.
Our stay on this occasion was in one of the ground floor 'mews' rooms. These rooms don't feel part of the hotel and we were not overly impressed.
The room was fairly small and the bathroom was very compact and felt basic (it smelt a little musty too - perhaps as there is no window).
The main issue though is the room is on a walkway which is used by people going to their rooms and also hotel / kitchen staff ( I think our room was also next to the staff locker room), which makes it very noisy and we had to keep the curtains closed at all times as there were often people standing outside. The hotel staff were not overly loud, but the nature of the layout / single glazing / location meant the sound was very noisy.
Had we stayed in one of the 'mews' rooms on a previous occasion, I don't think we would have returned. A shame that I think this will be our last stay - if I was considering a return visit I would now only do so if I could be assured we would be in one of the main hotel rooms.
Re the car parking - I do think it is a real positive there is free car parking / the hotel is prepared the pay for public parking if the hotel car parks are full.
The hotel looks very smart, but untrained staff 'let it down'. We felt sorry for one young man, who said he was new, struggling on his own to serve drinks in the lounge bar one evening. We waited nearly half an hour just to get two drinks. He just didn't have anyone to help him understand what seems to be a very complicated computer system.
Breakfast was very poor. Cheap thin bread for toast, and scrambled eggs like rubber.
We also complained because all the dirty laundry and plastic sacks, together with new toilet rolls were left outside our room every day while the housekeeper 'did her round'. this is unhygienic and shows poor training for the staff.
Car parking challenging, but at least it is available, and we did always get a space, albeit often the last one!
The lift was a welcome asset, although cannot be seen from reception, and close to front door, so not sure about security.
We had a room overlooking the street-the road sweeper comes by at 6.00am every morning!
Won't rush back.
The bars had a good selection of drink and the tables were well spaced for social distancing.
Breakfast was of a good quality and catered well for vegetarian option. If there was something not on the menu then all you had to do was ask.
I don't think the hotel could do anything else to make it more covid safe and being right in Barnstaple we would definitely stay here again.
Our room was downstairs in a outside court yard which was quite noisy.
We tried to book lunch for the next day but once again was told it was fully booked and to enquire in the morning. When we enquired the next day we were fitted in for an early lunch at 11.30. It never occured to us that we would have an issue eating at the hotel restaurants as residents I suggest booking before your visit. The food in the hotel is stunning so I was glad we persevered with our requested for availability. I would stay at this hotel again i would upgrade my room and book the restaurant in advance.
