superb staff who worked so hard to ensure we enjoyed our stay; not often one experiences this level of professionalism with no exceptions.
everywhere was immaculately clean and it was evident that measures were in place to deal with the covid crisis
the food was excellent; the staff in the dining room went to great lengths to arrange tables for our party of 8 in a smaller separate area the service throughout the meal was patient and faultless despite the demands of 4 young children|
the downstairs areas were beautifully decorated and so relaxing
the location of the hotel was excellent - right in the centre of the town
parking was nearby and very easy

However, I feel I could not give it five stars which overall it probably deserved. My room, 105, was rather small and the bed was the smallest double I have ever seen!!!
I checked at reception and was assured it was a standard double. It just seemed rather inappropriate in such a luxurious, comfortable hotel. The bathroom was wonderful and had clearly been refurbished to a very high standard.
On the first night of our stay my daughter and grandchild were given a room which really was unacceptable; there was unbearable noise from some sort of fan and absolutely no view whatsoever. They were moved for the second night.
I feel that the prices of these rooms did not reflect the rather dated and less than acceptable standards.

For the money we paid and what we were expecting from the photos we saw was chalk and cheese, we felt room 112 was worth no more than £85. (Photos attached) When we turned up late having to park at an off site car park, if you are disabled/elderly and have trouble walking, and carrying luggage this is not the place for you, has on site parking but limited to first come first serve and only about 20 spaces for a 4 floor hotel!!It was very noisy too until about 2am, but to be fair a lesson for us is not book a place in the middle of town centre. On a positive the parking was free, the room was clean and the site is COVID secure, the staff were great and the restaurant and food fantastic, I would not stay here again for the price but I would use the restaurant. Small green soap in bathroom pic was ours not hotels , they do provide hand pump hand wash, shampoo and body wash

Thank you MoiraJ327 for taking the time to write your review. We really appreciate your honest and constructive feedback, however, it is disappointing to learn that your experience with us failed to meet your expectations. We apologise unreservedly for your disappointment. We do understand that our car parking is limited with only 27 spaces, however, as you rightly point out this is reimbursed. In normal times we would offer to park and pick up your vehicle and assist with luggage, however, to keep our staff and guests safe we cannot currently offer these services. We are grateful for your kind comments regarding our cleanliness and COVID secure procedures. It is also great to hear that you really enjoyed the restaurant and the service provided by our team. Thank you again for taking the time to write your review.

A beautiful old world hotel, plenty of charm, comfortable and friendly atmosphere, the staff were hospitable and attentive. However, sadly, the standard of the dining arrangements have plummeted. On first entering the hotel the seating and food ordering is confusing and disjointed, not enough staff on duty, the chef was continually having to leave the carvery to search for trays! The meat was cooked in small batches resulting in diners having to leave the queue and return empty handed to their table to await the arrival of more meat. The beef was over cooked and tough, as were the yorkshire puddings. Cutlery had to be requested from obviously harassed staff. The main dining room was closed, leaving the cafe and lounge areas, some diners were forced to eat from low coffee tables which meant bending over to eat, how unnatural is that? Certainly not conducive to comfortable and digestive good eating. Several fellow diners were unimpressed, especially remembering, until just recently, how enjoyable dining in this elegant hotel used to be.

My husband and I stayed here last night on the way home to Cornwall to visit family. We arrived early and there was no problem parking in the hotel car-park and we checked in later in the day. The room was spotlessly clean and we felt very safe with all the Covid 19 precautions in place.

Hotel well located for the town and other pubs/restaurants if needed. Our room was at the back of the hotel, there was a little noise outside in the early hours but guess you can get that in any large town, it didn't keep us awake though.

We ate in the bar62 restaurant and the meal was excellent and very good value for money, also treated ourselves to a couple of cocktails each too!! Would definitely recommend.

Only slight downside was that the postcode for the car-park was the bus station but we called the hotel and they advised, maybe some signage on a wall with an arrow would be of help?

All the staff helpful and friendly. Thank you for a lovely overnight stay.

Thank you Emma J for taking the time to write your review. It’s great to hear what a nice time you had with us on your way back to Cornwall, we are really pleased you had an excellent meal and cocktails with us in our bistro. It is also fantastic to know how reassured you felt by the cleanliness of our rooms and our COVID-19 safety measures. We apologise for the complexity of trying to find our car parking, we are continually doing all we can to make this as easy as possible, we do have some roadside signage around the town to try and help guide our guests, but we will review this to see if there is anything more that we can do. Thank you again for your feedback, we hope to see you again soon!

We have stayed at this hotel several times and previously been happy with the combination of the quality of the room, price and location.

Our stay on this occasion was in one of the ground floor 'mews' rooms. These rooms don't feel part of the hotel and we were not overly impressed.

The room was fairly small and the bathroom was very compact and felt basic (it smelt a little musty too - perhaps as there is no window).

The main issue though is the room is on a walkway which is used by people going to their rooms and also hotel / kitchen staff ( I think our room was also next to the staff locker room), which makes it very noisy and we had to keep the curtains closed at all times as there were often people standing outside. The hotel staff were not overly loud, but the nature of the layout / single glazing / location meant the sound was very noisy.

Had we stayed in one of the 'mews' rooms on a previous occasion, I don't think we would have returned. A shame that I think this will be our last stay - if I was considering a return visit I would now only do so if I could be assured we would be in one of the main hotel rooms.

Re the car parking - I do think it is a real positive there is free car parking / the hotel is prepared the pay for public parking if the hotel car parks are full.

Thank you for taking the time to write your really informative review. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for your repeated custom and sincerely hope that you will decide to continue to stay with us. I'm sorry that your experience on this occasion did not match that of your previous visits. We do understand that our ground floor mews rooms can be affected by noise, our team try very hard to keep on noise to a minimum when passing a guest's room especially in this courtyard area. We are constantly upgrading and refurbishing the hotel and I hope that we will be bale to resolve the problem in this area in the not so distant future. The reception team will be more than happy to accommodate any request, so if you prefer not to be in our mews area, if you have a favourite room, or if you like your pillows a certain way - our friendly receptionists will do their very best to make it happen. I really appreciate your approach to our car parking, and I hope that our other guests will look upon it in this way. Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback, please don't hesitate to contact me directly If you wish to discuss your experience further. I hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the hotel soon!

This hotel has a good central town location. Easy to get to. Very convenient to visit the town by foot.
The hotel looks very smart, but untrained staff 'let it down'. We felt sorry for one young man, who said he was new, struggling on his own to serve drinks in the lounge bar one evening. We waited nearly half an hour just to get two drinks. He just didn't have anyone to help him understand what seems to be a very complicated computer system.
Breakfast was very poor. Cheap thin bread for toast, and scrambled eggs like rubber.
We also complained because all the dirty laundry and plastic sacks, together with new toilet rolls were left outside our room every day while the housekeeper 'did her round'. this is unhygienic and shows poor training for the staff.
Car parking challenging, but at least it is available, and we did always get a space, albeit often the last one!
The lift was a welcome asset, although cannot be seen from reception, and close to front door, so not sure about security.
We had a room overlooking the street-the road sweeper comes by at 6.00am every morning!
Won't rush back.

Last minute booking offered good value. Hotel is ideally located at the end of the high street. I have scored the room 4 due to it being on the slightly small side, although it was fine for a short break. We had a very comfortable and quiet nights sleep. We didn't eat at the hotel but did have drinks in the lounge. The lounge is furnished to a high standard and is very pleasant and we found the drinks to be reasonably priced. The restaurant and bar 62 appeared to be very busy, however no noise seemed to transfer into the hotel. All staff we encountered were pleasant and professional. We would certainly look to stay here again if we are in the area.

The only disappointing thing was the postcode to the car park which sent us into a car park for flats. After we found the car park the stress was over. The hotel was very clean and covid friendly. Check in was easy. We had booked the suite, which was big and well worth the extra. The only thing missing was a small fridge for fresh milk and chilled water. We stayed for 3 nights and rooms were cleaned on a request only, which we never bothered with. If you ran out of anything it was quick and hassle free to get restocked, a knock on the door and they were left outside the door in a plastic bag .
The bars had a good selection of drink and the tables were well spaced for social distancing.
Breakfast was of a good quality and catered well for vegetarian option. If there was something not on the menu then all you had to do was ask.
I don't think the hotel could do anything else to make it more covid safe and being right in Barnstaple we would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here for one night to break up a long drive home from Cornwall. Beautiful hotel. Check in was running late due to covid and sanitizing rooms understandable so we had a cream tea whilst we waited. We booked a standard room, small but ok for one night if i was staying longer it could of become claustrophobic. Disappointed that we were told that the restaurant was fully booked, but on further enquiries from another couple we were traveling with we were fitted in for a late dinner, which was delicious.
Our room was downstairs in a outside court yard which was quite noisy.
We tried to book lunch for the next day but once again was told it was fully booked and to enquire in the morning. When we enquired the next day we were fitted in for an early lunch at 11.30. It never occured to us that we would have an issue eating at the hotel restaurants as residents I suggest booking before your visit. The food in the hotel is stunning so I was glad we persevered with our requested for availability. I would stay at this hotel again i would upgrade my room and book the restaurant in advance.

Thank you TracybA51JI for taking the time to write your review. We are so pleased that you had a great stay with us on your visit to us from Cornwall and really enjoyed your food. We apologise that you were unable to book a table in advance with us, this is an unfortunate combination of circumstances with restrictions on the number of guests we can accommodate and the government’s eat out to help out scheme, this is highly unusual and you would not usually experience this. This hotel is very central with two car parks that some drivers would find difficult to negotiate. For those who take pride in the appearance of their cars, beware! The local seagull population will put paid to that! We had a front facing bedroom that was extremely warm. The hotel does provide an air conditioning unit, but that is so noisy you cannot leave it on at night. The revellers noise starts to die down between midnight and about 1:00 am and then the local authority starts to clean up after them at about 6:00am. For light sleepers or those who would like to enjoy a good nights sleep, this would be a real problem. The bedroom was nicely furnished, very clean, and had a modern bathroom, but access to the room could be challenging for some guests. The staff in the hotel are very pleasant and they provide a good breakfast.

I can`t remember either but the staff are most obliging and if you ask I am sure they will help. It states on their website that they want everyone to thoroughly enjoy their stay and they are only too happy to provide anything you might need -just ask Reservation staff and they will have it ready for when you arrive.
