Detailed Reviews
We stayed in the Manor Cottage at Trimstone Manor from the 25th June for a week as a family of five. We really enjoyed our stay, and would stay again. Here's the pro's and con's of each to sum everything up:
Pro's:
* Quiet location
* Handy indoor swimming pool
* Games room for the children
* Variety of birds for the children to look at and interact with on the field
* No noise heard from any neighbours, as the walls are easily a foot or so thick
* Well equipped and spacious cottage
* Comfy beds and sofa's
Con's:
* Access is down a one track road, with several bends, so had to be very careful
* Games room is in need of a freshen up and repairs to some equipment
* A thorough dusting is needed, as noticed plenty of dust on flat surfaces
* Double glazing would be preferred for the downstairs, where the bedrooms are, as it does get cooler than the upstairs living area, and you can hear cars arriving outside your bedroom
The con's are liveable with though, just be aware of them. Overall a lovely place with kind staff.

Having been double booked twice and in Cornwall with nowhere to stay, to see this available was a life saver! Lady on reception phone was very friendly but when we were told we could only stay if we had our own bedding my hopes were dashed. It seemed their laundry couldnt cope and they had no clean sheets, they would take £52 off the £641 price. No problem.. I trip to Argos and £36 and I had my sheets. The Hotel is situated down a narrow road and the caravan is in a lovely field with some play equipment and a enclosure that included Peacocks, Geese, Turkeys and a pair of Emu's ! The Hotel had a lovely indoor pool with small gym and a payg sauna. A games room with free pool table (old but ok) and a table tennis table.Didnt go to bar or restuarant. Manager and his son were extremely welcoming and Hotel was in great position to drive to Woolacombe or Ilfracombe...Now to the Caravan.. probably the oldest and smallest I have been in ( I have stayed in lots !) It is 4 birth with a double and twin room. Double was adequate but beds in twin were very pretty much narrow camp beds. Bathroom ceiling leaked when it rained,back of toilet also had a leak at back and lino was sticking up on floor. Outside door in living room area was warped so very difficult to close. Decor very very dated. As another reviewer stated the owner said the caravan "is what it is".
The caravan was a last minute saviour for us and we were not overly fussed about its condition but be warned of its condition! I know its all about supply and demand but possibly a bit pricey at £600 for 4 nights. To sum up.. staff great, facilities great, location great, caravan poor, Price a tad expensive. Would we stay again... YES!

I was unsure whether to book a stay here due to some of the other reviews, but it was in the location we needed and had accommodation to suit our family. The setting and grounds are particularly lovely, sitting outside in the sunshine enjoying drinks and food was fantastic. We had fun using the pool and games room as well as looking at all the rare birds on site.
We staying in Croyde and Braunton with our 14 & 11 yr old children sharing Crodye with the extra z-bed and us just across the hall. With no other rooms in this section it was like having our own apartment with plenty of space for the four of us.
In reality, the rooms are dated but in a period property we weren't expecting modern rooms.
Food at dinner and breakfast was fantastic.
It did feel expensive for an overnight stay but with the space and facilities we had on offer it was OK. We did have the choice of all squeezing into one room in a travel lodge, this was a far better if more expensive option and one we certainly enjoyed a lot more.

Hotel is very dated and needs tlc, we stayed in a pet friendly room that smelt damp, had a noisy bathroom fan that had a sign asking you to leave on to prevent setting fire alarms off and was just generally a pretty bleak experience. Maybe the other rooms are better but after seeing the state of the room we decided to skip exploring the pool or any of the other listed amenities. My main concern was we were woke at around 2am to the sound of squeaking rats running around in the ceiling which is pretty alarming. I mentioned this to the lady on reception when I paid and checked out, and she mentioned somebody had mentioned something previously but thought it could of been bird's.... I advised it absolutely wasn't bird's that we heard scurrying around and squeaking, she then replied to say it's what you expect being out in the country side.....
Agree to disagree on that one.
I'm not in the habit of leaving reviews, especially ones that aren't great but feel it's needed here as the hotel just doesn't live up to expectations or cleanliness of a £120 per night rated room.

Dear ChrisK Thank you for your review though disappointed that you did not enjoy your one night stay in your dog-friendly room and felt that all we deserves was 'poor'. We are bemused that you say last weekend was damp as it has been so dry and hot recently so that makes no sense. The sign in your room does certainly NOT say leave the bathroom fan-on all night! How daft. It says clearly 'please ensure you use the fan when you USE the shower to ensure excess steam doesn't activate the heat sensors of the alarm (some guests seem to shower with the door open too, not confining the steam to the shower!) I do wish you had asked us about that if you did not understand. We are an historic building with roots back to Domesday. Since we have been here have spent over seven figures on refurbishment, upgrading and improvements. We are still what we are and it appears we were not for you. We level ourselves at three star and are priced accordingly and not five star which we don't want to be, but a comfortable homeliness which most guests really welcome and enjoy. We have old and antique furniture and surroundings where we can and these are appreciated by guests. If you want Ikea - that's not us. I am very sorry if you were awakened by any creatures in the roof space (well above your ceiling) - we are in the middle of the country and despite keeping on top of the problems from a hygienic perspective, unfortunately occasionally we do suffer visits but that is par for the course wherever you go sadly. We are also very nature conscious so try to encourage wildlife as well (I hope you noticed how many wild birds there are around the Place for example) so a delicate balancing act. It could easily have been jackdaws which seek-out any possible opening for their nests too. Everywhere was full that weekend (as most weekends are these days) so I am not quite sure what you will expect for what you pay but clearly please ensure you choose a modern property next time and also not one in the Countryside - which the vast majority of our guests enjoy instead. Yours sincerely

The Manor is set in lovely grounds with gorgeous views of open countryside in an away from it all location but within easy reach of local attractions. I would describe the manor as shabby chic, but that is meant as a compliment, it has lots of character. The couple who manage the hotel are very helpful & try their best to look after their guests but I do think more staff are needed. The food is plentiful ( especially the breakfasts ) & the dinner menu is mostly fairly typical 'pub' type but of good standard. We enjoyed our stay &definitely hope to return to enjoy the special ambience

This was supposed to be the relaxing luxurious end to our holiday but it couldn’t have been anything less. What they are advertising this place as is a complete and utter con. Pool was filthy, gym was horrendous with no ventilation and a putrid smell. Lobby reeked of damp, paint coming off the walls and carpets warn out. No where to park when we came back from dinner. The games room was probably ok back in the 70’s when it was probably last updated. Think a dirty Fawlty Towers. I’ve never left a review on here or Booking.com but this place ruined our trip and they know what they’re portraying this place as is a con. Should be ashamed of themselves. We left at 8:00 in the morning after a fire alarm set off by another guest woke us due to bathroom not being ventilated. My girlfriend had to drive back for 4 hours with next to no sleep because the mattress was horrendous. How they sell this as the deluxe room is laughable but not for us. Should you be able to see the floor through the carpet in a room which costs £120. I’ll leave it at that

Oh dear. Where does anyone start here. First, we are always sad when someone does not enjoy their experience with us. This summer we have been just so busy and have met so many really wonderful people and many of whom have left glowing reports in one way or another. Then, there are those like these who even before they arrive are complaining about something – like the later check-in time as a consequence of Covid19 of the pre-check-in Covid19 health declaration and who rants for ages before our Receptionist is allowed to get a word in edgeways and say ‘but sir, your room is ready and earlier than usual’. So this is one night, in my favourite and probably our best room with super views down over the valley from the Bay Window and south-facing early morning sun as we had that Saturday. How peaceful, how tranquil, how verdant the views over the lovely gardens. It has a four-poster bed and a lovely airy aspect. We usually insist on a minimum two-night stay but they were allowed to book for the last gap we had that evening, last thing at £60 each. The lady of the house slept on the same mattress for weeks after lock-down started, for self-isolation - it was just so 'uncomfortable'. (Just think had they said, changing the mattress was something we could have done easily had they asked). I had the fortune of not meeting this more mature gentleman and his girlfriend – a shame but there we are. So what happened? Not a single comment whilst they were here and then absconding without paying a penny so sadly we have had to involve the Police. There are professional complainants who go on holiday on the backs of hardworking hospitality providers. I can’t remember ever having to do this before. He had already cancelled the credit card authorisation to secure the booking – probably before they even arrived. Granted, after they left we had a telephone call on the Saturday morning from the car ‘somewhere’ and a tirade of rants commenced, we didn’t know who it was to start, he just fired-off and halfway through he came-up for air to allow the polite question of ‘who are you sir’. He didn’t care who ‘I’ was but entertainingly, did say at the end ‘I know you only work there’ as he rang off. Instantly I went to time-date photograph the awful conditions he listed, so ‘awful’ that they still chose, after discovering them, to stay there in the room, all night – not giving us opportunity to respond to any concerns, possibly re-room them somehow (unlikely as we were so busy but no question) and to listen and offer solace if that was appropriate. Then the lies within the many tens of minutes of rants he has made since to any member of staff in the Hotel who had the misfortune of intercepting his call and indeed our sister business (which is obliged to record calls) – they couldn’t believe it and were so impressively professional with this harassing, abusive and crude man on the end of the telephone. No-one should ever have to be subjected to that and certainly not over £120. Yes, we have the email saying that when he rang on Saturday morning he asked to speak to the manager but was told he was not available. He did not know he was talking with the owner already as he didn’t want to listen. There is also the email saying they wouldn’t have had ‘much chance to use the facilities’. Fire alarm system? Yes, indeed, always most frustrating when there is a false alarm (I think we have had two all year) and usually a guest inadvertently pushing a panic alarm as happened this week and all we can do is apologise profusely as it is irritating. I guess this guest prefers fire alarms which are silent or where there aren’t any at all. We care more about our guests’ safety than that which is why we have a top of the range system for their security. Since? To close the matter we have offered a compromise financial settlement without accepting any liability but simply to turn the page. He doesn’t want to pay a penny. Today, our latest guests in this room have just vacated – a lovely younger couple and she’s rather plump as she is expecting their first baby in weeks. They stayed a couple of nights and had a lovely time. He’s a London solicitor with litigation experience so it was interesting having a chat with him after querying their experiences from their stay. It will be lovely to see them back and they promised us a glowing review. Sadly we were never going to meet these people’s expectations so why did they choose to book with us? We have never wanted to provide a service for people like that so the mistake, surely, is theirs and they need to make sure in future they book an establishment which meets their needs and at their budget?

We went for afternoon tea for a special treat for my sisters birthday but was very disappointed. When booking I requested no salmon sandwiches as not lovers of fish, so when it came out we had two rounds of salmon sandwiches and one round of sliced hard cheese and wafer thin cheap ham, the selection of cakes was 5 cupcakes bought in from Tesco and a frozen Victoria sponge cake. Literally poor quality all round, we then had one pot of coffee and a pot of tea to share between 5 of us. The cost was £21 each we waited 2 hours for the scones to come and they never did so went in to pay as need to get back home for school pick ups etc and was told that we should have asked for scones. I’m sorry but afternoon tea as it advertised includes scones customer service was awful no extra coffee or tea or soft drinks offered and no one checked to see if ok. Was told by member of staff the lady in-charge of kitchen had gone shopping we were the only people eating there and yet no one checked to see if we were ok. The grounds are beautiful but the whole experience and manor hotel itself is dated and old fashioned.
Very very disappointed and disgusted with how much we paid and would never recommend to anyone, no member of staff took responsibility or apologised. It was awful and literally feel like I have been robbed.
They really need to work on customer service skills and maybe experience other establishments and how they serve afternoon tea as they really don’t have a clue.
Do not go here people unless you want to be disappointed and feel like you have been robbed.

Dear Ms LG You booked Afternoon Tea with us for four adults and requested no salmon. We are sorry that the note regarding the salmon was overlooked. You requested 12 noon which we would never normally accept, as Afternoon Tea is not a lunch replacement and we serve this in the afternoon but foolishly we agreed nevertheless. You then telephone to add another adult, a baby and a toddler and to move your table to a garden table. This was agreed and a high chair was arranged. The following day we received a call from one of your party to ask if dogs were allowed and we explained not in the restaurant but in the gardens was fine. We then informed the caller that an outside table had been requested. The caller was not happy about that ‘as it might rain’ but we explained that we had a rainproof pavilion for inclement weather so everyone was suited. You were served no cheap food. We use a food catering company that does not sell ‘wafer thin' ham. You received no cakes from Tesco as they come from the same prestige provider or home-made. We apologise profusely that you were served salmon and no scones. We did however bring you an orange juice and water that you requested for the children and we asked then if you needed anything else. Only when you came in to the hotel to pay did you mention that you had not received scones. You complained that the price was way too high for what you received. We apologised immediately and went to report this problem to the Head Housekeeper. The Head Housekeeper went immediately to the garden when she apologised and offered to pack scones, cream and jam for you to take away too but this offer was refused. You did not pay £21.00 per adult which is still low for Afternoon Tea. We reduced your bill by £7.00 per adult and you paid £70.00 and not £105.00 for all five adults. We did not charge you for the drinks and food which the children may have shared. We certainly do not ‘rob people’ and you certainly received apologies from not one but two members of staff. Your shockingly rude review is not at all necessary as you did indeed receive apologies and a considerable discount. There is no doubt that we erred over the scones but you could very easily have come to Reception to allow us the opportunity to bring scones to you immediately but you chose not to do so and then complained whilst accepting a large discount. This is the very first negative review that we have received for our Afternoon Tea service and we are used to visitors leaving very happy with the food and service that they received and more often than not with a doggie-bag such is the value and amount of food that we normally provide. We are concerned that as you spent a considerable time chatting with a staff member who you know as a personal friend that some acrimony or other matter is at the root of your complaint and that is disgraceful and very sad, especially as it compromises his work situation by your inequitable ‘review’. Again, we are very sorry that this happened but also inform you that sadly you and any of your party will never again be welcomed at this establishment.

My wife and I stayed in Lee Studio for a week and were very happy with the accommodation. We loved sitting out on the decking watching the emu’s. The staff were very friendly and were very helpful when our car broke down, even coming out to collect us from the garage. We really enjoyed the cream tea, which they accommodated my wife’s gluten free diet.
Thank you for a wonderful stay

My elderly mum and I chose to stay at Trimstone because it is close to my brother's home in Braunton, close to the beaches of Woolacoombe and Ilfracoombe, and yet still secluded; surrounded by beautiful countryside and gardens. Disabled access was also important for us, and I was able to book us a ground floor room each, next to the car park and with views of the beautiful birds living at the hotel (from an accessible private patio). The swimming pool was warm, clean and also very close to our rooms. I didn't try the sauna or gym - maybe next time!
Breakfast was delicious, home cooked and filling. We also had a great cream tea, with Rhianne's freshly baked (huge) scones still warm. Yes, Trimstone is old fashioned, but the family and staff are working hard to develop and maintain this wonderful old piece of history (which is also their home). The price for our stay was a lot less than in nearby beach front hotels, and we felt is was well worth what we paid. For us, the feeling of being welcomed and valued guests was the most important factor. In any case, our rooms were comfortable and in good working order, and we enjoyed playing pool in the games room. . Thank you to everyone at Trimstone, and especially to Rhianne, who was on hand day and night and works tirelessly! We will be visiting again and feel we have found a 'home from home' for our future visits to North Devon.

The Pool is open in the season and heated. Sadly that lovely Family above suffered when the boiler locked-out and before the engineer could fix it the next day so usually it is over 30 degrees!
