Having visited the Bodmin Jail Attraction a few days previous, we took a look at the hotel and decided to spent a night there on the back of our short break to Cornwall. This place really has the WOW factor. It’s not the first time I’ve spent a few nights in a Jail, we when to the Malmasion Oxford Jail a few years back, but this is a step above. They have literally thrown sheds loads of money at this and it shows from the moment you step inside the jail entrance. There are 3 floors and 2 wings with around 100 cells converted into luxury rooms, all the mod cons, including A/C, the bathroom has a freestanding bath and separate shower with all the goodies, Tea, coffee etc in the room, 50” + TV on the wall. Within the Hotel is a Chapel with is used as a Dinning/Breakfast room, (see if you can spot the only false part of the building), a great champagne/Gin bar, serving nibbles etc, Attached also is the Hangman’s Tavern open all day and evening with good selection of drinks and menus. (You don’t have to stay at the hotel to use this) Service is extremely friendly, buts that the Cornish way Me Lovely’s. I got a better deal on booking .com but I know they will match the rate if booked direct, includes breakfast, which again was superb, as was the evening deal the night before. Definitely a bucket list hotel for a short stay.

I booked three rooms with dinner in the Chapel restaurant for myself my partner, her two children and their partners, one of who had ben before and raved about the hotel. On a positive note the refurbishment of the hotel is amazing and the rooms are very impressive. Our first disappointment wass with the Jolly Hangman Tavern which we assumed would be on the lines of the Pilchard Inn on Burgh Island,, sadly it is more like a staff canteen. The Chapel restaurant is very impressive and we were all looking forward to experiencing the amazing ceiling lighting, sadly we were advised that the lights were broken. We ordered wine for dinner and were advised that our chosen wine the French Merlot was not in stock and were offered alternatives that were from different Countries. We were advised that the wine list was changing which is a very poor excuse, the white wine we chose was not very chilled either. The a la carte menu is very limited and to be advised at 7.30pm that one of the starters was sold out was disappointing but the worst part that two of the three people who ordered the beef at £31.00 was served warm, we did not complain as we did not want to disrupt the table. Upon checking out I advised the front desk of our issues we experienced which they said would be passed on, this was an opportunity for the hotel to take something off our bill which was in excess of £1,000.00, sadly not the case.

We broke our journey to Cornwall with an overnight stay at the hotel after reading so many positive reviews and were not disappointed. The hotel is fab! Modern, clean, stylish and comfortable. The building has been cleverly refurbished with no expense spared, leaving lots of the original features which makes it very atmospheric. The staff were, without exception, brilliant. They are obviously proud to work in the hotel and are full of enthusiasm. We had a delicious meal in the Chapel restaurant (great waitress!) and didn’t plan to go to the museum but as it was recommended by everyone we spoke to, we decided to go the morning before leaving and again, it was well worth the visit.

Arrived at lunchtime for a beautiful lunch in the Tavern, very well priced and the food was excellent, room was ready at 2pm, so nice and early, and wow what a room, they way they have refurbed the prison into a hotel is first class, the rooms are big, made up of 3 previous prison cells, a large and very well equipped bathroom, a lounge area with big TV, desk and a comfortable chair, the bedroom has a large and very comfortable bed, with high quality bed linen, a large wardrobe and everything you need for a great stay. Them into the prison attraction... well worth the entrance fee ...I won't tell you what happens except that you will be scared, amazed, excited and surprised in equal measures.... we dined in the Champagne Bar that evening, and you won't he durprised to hear the food was stunning, and again very reasonably priced, as we're the numerous G&Ts that were enjoyed over dinner, and a lovely evening finished off with a very fine single malt and a Baileys over ice. Then to bed to see if the ned was as comfy as it looked...and yes it was a fine night sleep was enjoyed and no ghostly experiences in our room at least!!! Next morning another fine restaurant, this time The Chapel for breakfast, and yet another faultless experience, the food, staff and the setting were perfect. I cannot recommend the hotel enough, there was nothing we experienced that could in any way be improved upon, it was a perfect stay mafe all the better because I got to share it with my beautiful wife!!!!
