La Missare is a luxurious B&B in the South of France. We have just four rooms with antique sheets on the beds, full of antiques and each one unique, all set in a wonderful garden with a pool. We're located in a tiny village just 40km west of Montpellier, in the midst of the wine country, and with lots of other sights, ancient towns, gorges, and lots of antiques stores and fairs, along with the Mediterranean Sea, which is just 40 minutes away. Our breakfast includes home-made jams, fresh bread, choice of drinks served in antique silver and with antique linen napkins. We're open all year, and our prices never change.

What a completely beautiful and charming place is La Missare. The owners have created an environment so tranquil and beautiful. The garden rings with the songs of birds from their aviary as well as the bubbling of the pool. The guest rooms are in a converted "cave" - previously used for storing le vin and are furnished with gorgeous antique linens, furniture and prints. This is worth a special drive, but it is not far from the A highway. You enter into a special world when you enter La Missare.

La Missare is not what it looks like from the outside when you first arrive at the main gate of the house. The main house itself was like a private museum. It was full of antiques and beautiful objects. The 4 guest rooms were hidden in a lush garden behind the main house. We were pleasantly surprised when Jean-Francois, the owner, led us through the main house to the garden. The garden was absolutely peaceful. We (2 couples) stayed at room 1 and room 2 for one night. Both rooms were spacious, clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. We all had a great night sleep. The only minor inconvenience was that there was no wall bracket for the hand held shower head in the bathroom but it was really nothing that would spoil your stay. We had breakfast at the main house the next morning. We never saw a setting of breakfast table that exquisite. Breakfast was simple but adequate and tasty. Our stay was memorable even though it was too short. Jean-Francois was friendly and welcoming. His three dogs were adorable. The garden and the guest rooms were beautiful. You can really see that Jean-Francois has put all his heart into this place.

La Missare is not the usual chambre d'hote. In a small village in the beautiful Herault, an unsuspected blue gate takes you into a hidden world, of culture, good taste, music and antiques. A grand piano welcomes you in the hall; Jean-Francois sometimes plays it delicately. You enter the sitting room, and soft opera music in the background makes you wonder where you are. At the back, the secret garden, full of birds, exotic trees and Mediterranean fruits. Jeffrey shows you round the guest rooms, in the exquisitely converted barn at the side of the garden. The courtyard with the aviary has beautiful cast iron tables for your memorable breakfasts. And, from there, you reach fantastic places, immersed in history and the Mediterranean light. A dream.

Jean-Francois is a man with a mission. Over the years he has transformed the old house and farm into a lovely B&B with a wonderful garden and (semi) antiques everywhere. The house is filled with classical music and paintings from local artists (mostly romantic). We stumbled on the place in a booklet with 'charming B&Bs' while we were in France and stayed there for 6 days. The first night when we returned from dinner in nearby Clermont d'Herault we walked into a garden concert by an Estonian Alt and a Siverian pianist. Magnificent. Jean-Francois has organized these kind of concerts for the last 3 years or so. We just missed the last one but this was a private after-match with just the B&B guests that were there. French breakfast is served in the garden and the tableware is as beautiful as the garden. The only thing you need to check when you're over 1.80m (5.9 feet) is you get a room with a modern sized bed.

Stayed at La Missare for 5 nights--could have stayed 365 more! Welcoming and peaceful are 2 words that immediately come to mind. Entering into the back courtyard is magical--beautifully landscaped with flowers in bloom in October! The aviary with happy chirping birds--and the owners two little dogs that scamper about their paradise. Breakfast is wonderful and leisurely --our fellow guests were from Belgium and Italy (for both, this was a return stay). The B and B is well situated close to all that you want to be close to yet, far away from noise and traffic of the city--a location well suited are for those who like to stroll and see the countryside. To say that the rooms are palace-like might be an understatement--linen sheets--do I need to say more? The on-site antique shop is well worth browsing thru and Jean Francois (Prop) provides history and detail on each piece. Jeff (Partner) is fluent not only in many languages but the art of conversation. No problems giving this fine establishment and excellent rating,

The first time I stayed at La Missare, I extended my stay by 2 nights! It is that lovely, serene, and beautiful. It really doesn't matter what time of year you go, you will feel that you are in an enchanted garden. And, there is a delightful antique shop on the premises!! What more could one ask? So, my advice is to go, go, go---take your paints or pencils, some books, your camera---then just go. Your life will be enriched by the experience.
