While the amenities don't warrant a five star review, it honestly doesn't matter. We spent a wonderful couple of nights on this island - it was a welcome stop after quite a hectic travel schedule. It's rough around the edges but that's part of its charm. The surrounding waters are beautiful and while the reef is struggling a little due to bleaching, there is still the opportunity to see black tip sharks (apparently it's a breeding spot so we saw adolescents), blue spotted rays (do be very careful not to stand on one or you're in quite a lot of trouble) and the dugong - which sadly we didn't see. Just relax, unwind and enjoy the quieter pace.
Modessa Island is, what I would say, the "real" Palawan experience. White sand beaches, good snorkeling, OK diving, simple accommodation, good food and nice staff.
It is not a five star standard resort BUT you feel wanted here. No one will go follow you around to buy pearls or do a tour. You see people mostly only during meal time when most are in the restaurant. You can snorkel your day away or just chill in one of the hammocks and just doze off to sleep.
The rates they give are reasonable -- for the stay, 3 meals and the boat ride? I would not even bargain for a lower price. BUT if you want to save some as you are staying longer, just book directly and ask for their budget rooms.
Been coming back for 4 years now and looking forward to each of my visits.
Tip: There is a dive shop on the island and it is pretty affordable to do your courses there and do some diving. Dive site is good for a new diver. ;-)
We came here for the end of our stay in Palawan, and boy what a good choice! We stayed 4 nights and needed to relax after being everywhere in Palawan the last 2 weeks. A great place if you need to calm down and enjoy private island place. Beers are not so expensive (for being a private island) either at 70 pesos. The guys working there are also great, they take you snorkeling, sandvolleyball and card games in the evening, all on your leisure of course. We had a lot of fun with Marco, Marmar, Eduin, Andrew and the other guys! We went snorkeling every day and we saw sting ray, lionfish, jackfish, clownfish, turtle, sea snake and barracuda. Some of these are a rare sight!
Back to basics, but back to nature and its wonders. Staff very friendly; you feel like you are living in their home, sharing their lives. They welcome you in a very good way. It's really an amazing place!
On this private island we have found the perfect place to relax and enjoy the amazing surrounding nature with a very worth ratio quality/price. The owner and the staff are very kind and the simple bungalows in front of the beach make you forgetting instantly everything. Very suggested the diving and snorkeling (right in front of the island) and the kayaking around the tiny island it takes just 20 minutes.
