Have just returned from an amazing 2 weeks at Surya Lanka, feeling totally cleansed and energised. All my aches and pains are gone, stress levels are at an all- time low and I feel powerful in both my body and mind. The location was stunning with a beautiful clean beach, the garden wonderfully relaxing and the entire staff always friendly and flexible. The treatments were not the usual"spa" ones - some were quite intense (virechana !)but these took place during the middle of my stay so I had enough time during the remainder of my stay to build up my strength and feel balanced. Many thanks to the entire staff for helping me regain my power and peace of mind.I will surely be back for more next year!

I had a blissful experience during my stay at the Surya Lanka Ayurvedic resort. The room was very well kept, spacious and equipped with all the comforts I needed. The highlight of my trip was definitely the amazing staff. They were so kind and I felt very well looked after yet not intrusive which was what I wanted during my Ayurvedic retreat. The food is exceptional. Being a complete vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly impressed by the options offered. It was some of the best food I had in Sri Lanka. Lastly, the location is unmatched with a delightful oceanfront setting and well kept gardens. Amazing for a peaceful stroll in the evenings. I am very grateful to everyone at the Surya Lanka Ayurvedic resort for my stay and look forward to visiting again in the future.

After reading all the positive reviews on Tripadvisor, and receiving good service from the hotel’s off-site Reservation Department, I chose Suraya Lanka for a 20 day Ayurveda Retreat. I have visited various Ayurveda resorts in the past 10 years - this hotel was by far the worst Ayurveda Hotel I have ever been to – so much so that I checked out after 3 days. I brought my complaints to the Manager’s attention shortly after Check In – his attitude was unapologetic, no-care, defensive and arrogant, which I found unacceptable. I don’t know if my complaints relate to Covid matters, or perhaps they were short staffed and key personnel absent or something, but here is the rundown: The Good - The hotel fronts a long and clean beach where one can swim safely. No beachboys and no major currents – this is definitely the best point of this hotel. - Beautiful manicured garden and grounds. - Very good off-site Reservation/Sales department – they were quick, accommodating and even offered a free upgrade. - The transfer from the airport to the hotel went smooth. - Restaurant staff friendly and accommodating and doing their best to please within the limitations set by management. The Bad - Very limited buffet for lunch and dinner, unappetising and poorly presented with no description of dish/ingredients or mention of suitability for different body types. Food is very important in Ayurveda and to present a buffet without any description or details of ingredients/ suitability for different dosha’s are not minimum standard practice. When I asked the Manager about the he had a vague excuse that the chef and waiters knows who can eat what… yet everybody eats the same unidentifiable curry, and they don’t even know what is my room number – how would they know my dosha/ diet restrictions? - Local restaurant right next to the resort and the “premier” “New Wing” rooms – woke up at 3am with drunk people screaming and shouting. - Even the premier “New Wing” rooms are very stuffy with no fresh air. A single bed Mosquito net is used to cover a King bed, which makes it impossible to sleep under – it is very claustrophobic, and unhygienic – because your body touch the net at any given point. When I complained they replace the net with another single net, this time with what looked like blood splatters. When I again complained again the Chief Housekeeper became very defensive and said there is nothing wrong it is just “rust”. I demanded a new net - they then bought and installed a slighter bigger net – but still not large enough. - Housekeeping not up to standard and no attention to detail. Dirty cups outside my room for 2 days, no flowers in room or on bed, nor anything special in the room, no nicely folded towels – just the bare minimum – clearly no love lost. - Pool area is unattractive and uninviting – only one pool lounger with a wet cushion and nowhere else to sit. - Treatment/Spa area unattractive and uninviting – lacks atmosphere. Staff speak loudly elsewhere during treatments, and little privacy and tranquillity. - Actual treatment not on par with other Ayurveda centres – My treatment of only one hour included a poorly executed massage. When I asked the doctor about this she confirmed that the general daily treatments are +- 1.5 hours - instead of the general 2.5-3 hours treatments elsewhere. - Atmosphere – the place has a strange and hostile atmosphere. The in-room Welcome File specifies that one should avoid “over talking” with other guests, and complaints should not be discussed at the dinner table but with management… then it is also specified that you get a table number and you should only sit at that table and not join other guest at their tables, without the hotel’s permission?? And then the dinner tables are set up in classroom-style rows with backs facing the row behind – feels very cold and strange. - Rip Off – what I was quoted and agreed on was not charged. At Check Out I received a full bill for the nights stayed and the 1 day’s bad treatment (although the Manager was well aware that I spent very little time in the hotel in search for a more suitable alternative). The “Spring Discount” and “Special Discount” which was quoted and agreed upon also disappeared and I was charged the full rack rate. I did not expect a free-bee but I certainly did not travel 22 hours specifically for an Ayurveda Retreat to land up at an hotel and receive in 3 days 1 bad 1 hour treatment. The bill was presented without any apology or token of compensation for the inconvenience, to the contrary - I was also forced to use their inhouse vehicle and charged Euro 20 to drive me a short distance to inspect alternative accommodation – which is far more than the going taxi rate. To add insult to injury, their Confirmation Form stipulates a discount if the bill is settled in cash. My total bill included a 20Euro for their car. Although management was aware that I am an unhappy customer with valid complaints brought to their attention on Day 1, they (in a petty way) informed me that the discount does not apply on the Euro 20…. For the amount of Euro 1.50! Terrible customer service! - Management’s attitude – before I left I explained to the manager in detail what my complaints are – he brushed this off in a defensive manner. When I left the premises carrying my own bags I passed the owner, who was aware that I am an unhappy customer – and she made no effort whatsoever to apologise, talk to me or to try resolve my complaints. In retrospect I should have left Suraya Lanka on day 1 and not wasted Euro 500 to spend an unpleasant 3 days at their below average facility to give them a chance to resolve their issues – because the complaints fell on deaf ears and they don’t understand customer service. I am happy to report that I spent the remainder of my holiday at another far superior Ayurveda Resort ( Barberyn Beach) which was fantastic in every regard, and 5 stars in comparison to Suraya Lanka’s 2 star, at more or less the same price.

Response from Michael Siyaguna, Marketing at Surya Lanka Ayurveda Beach Resort

Dear Mrs Stoeltzing, We appreciate you taking the time to comment on your experience at Surya Lanka. Despite the many challenges of running a resort in Sri Lanka during this time our guest comment sheets these past 06 months have been better than at any point in the last 10 years - which makes your brief stay at Surya Lanka, and subsequent review, quite perplexing. Due to the serious nature of your comments I would like to address them point by point: - In front of each dish at the buffet we place both a name card with the name of the dish, as well as the key ingredient within the dish. i.e. if it is a Beetroot Curry, we place both a sign saying ‘Beetroot Curry’ as well as an actual Beetroot in front of the dish. We can not list each ingredient that goes into a curry, as guests would be reading at the buffet rather than serving themselves, and neither is that standard practice as you say. At Surya Lanka we specialise in PANCHAKARMA, and we have a dietary system to complement the Panchakarma cleansing process. We very well understand that diet plays a pivotal role, which is why we have a dedicated page on our website which touches on this, which is then expanded upon in our information booklet on arrival. Further, all guests have a separate consultation at the start just to cover the topics of oils and diet - you would have maybe had a different view if you had turned up for this consultation. Our wait staff do know your room number - by the room number placed on your table!, which they also communicate to our chefs when you first arrive at the buffet. The Chefs also have a copy of your diet sheet behind the buffet. - We did not receive any complaints from you or any other guests about the restaurant adjacent to Surya Lanka during your stay, neither do they have a liquor licence to serve alcohol. However I will ask our Security guards to keep an eye out for this in the night. - Mrs Stoeltzing, you were provided with the same sized Mosquito net that every single room in Surya Lanka is equipped with. And you weren’t sleeping on a King Bed - all our rooms in the New Wing have two adjoining single beds, as we regularly have friends travelling together, and our nets are sized appropriately. Due to your behaviour while “demanding” new netting, our housekeeper quickly unpacked a mosquito net out of storage and fixed it for you - unfortunately this had dust on it, which I apologise for. In lieu of this, our Manager arranged for a new net to be bought over all the way from Matara specifically for you. Just a point for you to consider - throughout the world you would probably get better service when you do not throw mosquito nets at the housekeeper. - We pay a lot of attention to cleanliness and I believe we excel in this area, however we do have room to improve on our presentation. Going forward, we will ensure that we place more emphasis on this aspect. - We did have plenty of loungers by the pool, however as guests overwhelmingly preferred to sit by the beach, one by one almost all have been placed on the edge of the beach. I recognise that this is an inconvenience for guests who would like to lie down beside the pool, and going forward we will replace those with a few new ones. - Each guest’s treatments take place within the privacy of their individual treatment cabin - we do not have a ‘common area’ where all guests are massaged like they do in some other centres. We also do not attempt to infuse the treatment sections with atmosphere - we aim for the entire section to be calm and relaxing. On that note, I apologise if our staff were speaking loudly elsewhere - this had not been brought to our attention by other guests during your stay, however we will closely monitor it going forward. - With regards to your comments regarding our treatment program, again i must emphasise that at Surya Lanka we practice PANCHAKARMA, we do not just offer massages for 2.5 hours a day and call it Ayurveda - you can do this anywhere in the world. Our treatment program, including the cleansing treatments that define Panchakarma, is the single biggest reason for the large number of repeat guests who visit Surya Lanka year on year for the last 27 years. It was created at the inception of Surya Lanka by two popular Doctors from the Kerala Ayurveda University, together with our resident Western Medicine Doctor at the time, and has not changed since - as we have had absolutely no reason to change it. We were also the first, and to my knowledge still the only, Ayurveda Resort to openly publish our Typical Treatment Schedule on our website. This is done in order to be completely transparent with our guests - so that they know exactly what they will be getting - and so that they can compare our program to others. Your treatment plan was devised based on this, and given to you. However as you had already made up your mind about our entire treatment program based on one Head, Face, Body massage I assume you were not able to grasp this concept at all. - We ask that guests let our wait staff know before switching tables for two reasons. First, because our wait staff know which room number you occupy by the number on your table (as pointed out earlier), and second so that the correct medicines can be served to the table by the Ayurveda staff after lunch / dinner. This is done for the convenience of our guests - so that they do not have to walk to the Ayurveda Centre twice a day to collect their medicines. - Being in the tourism industry yourself, you know full well the hardship suffered by the industry throughout the world. As I am sure you noticed, Surya Lanka was completely full at the time of your stay, the majority being repeat guests. In fact we had told other potential guests that we did not have any more rooms available for that period. You had booked at Surya Lanka for 20 nights / 19 treatment days. You left after 03 nights / 01 treatment day. Our guests generally book months, if not an year ahead for the peak season - therefore that room stayed empty for 17 nights after you left, which represented a huge loss for us. In most hotels throughout the world you would be charged a significant portion of the total, if not all. In spite of this we did not charge for a single unused service, and to accuse us of financial misconduct is baseless and facetious. Our Spring discount starts from 21.03, and was only applied to the portion of your stay after 21.03 from the onset - as you cut your stay short, and only stayed from 14.03 to 17.03 the spring discount was not valid. Despite your claim otherwise, the Industry discount was applied to your bill - please email us if you would like another copy of your amended invoice. - Mrs Stoeltzing, since you travelled through Sri Lanka after your stay with us I am sure you saw the queues at petrol sheds, and heard of the price of diesel doubling during your time here. As you very well know, the reason you were ‘forced’ to use our transport was because we are a ‘Level 01 Safe and Secure Hotel’ and Tourism Ministry Covid rules forbade us from taking you back after leaving the bio-bubble if you did not used our transport. Even so, you were charged 18.50 Euros for a round trip of 60km, along with our driver having to wait hours for you in between - you say this is a rip off? Believe me, at a time when our staff were queuing up for hours every day to fill up diesel, we would have happily allowed you to find a taxi of your own at whatever price you could find one for. - At the time of your departure you had brushed aside the housekeeping member assigned to carry your bags to the car in a very rude manner, and told him you would carry them yourself, which is quite emblematic of your stay at Surya Lanka, which you seemed to have decided was not to your taste as soon as you walked through the door. We normally do not respond to Tripadvisor comments in such detail, as we generally have extremely satisfied guests. However Surya Lanka has never before been accused of financial misconduct, and I felt it necessary to protect a stellar reputation we have all worked very hard to achieve over the last 27 years.

Lovely resort with great staff. Food and treatment were exceptional. Lovely beach room but pretty basic for the price (very high for Sri Lanka) The resort uses far too much plastic. The beach is stunning but depressing as it is covered in plastic and other rubbish. It would cost so little for the business along the beach employ beach cleaners. One member of staff, for example, spent the whole day sweeping around the pool staring at young women. I’d put him on the beach! Why not some signs telling people not to litter?

As part of an intensive and extensive healing program, we spent almost 3 weeks at Surya Lanka for the second time in November 2021. The reception at Surya Lanka was extremely warm. The medical care and massages by therapists and doctors went perfectly and was characterized by great kindness and helpfulness. The entire staff is also extremely helpful and amiable. The hotel complex, which is located directly on the beach, the garden and the bungalows are very clean and well maintained. Immediately in front of our bungalow we observed the beautiful wildlife daily, which made our rest times very entertaining. The food tasted fantastic and was varied. We again felt very comfortable and will come again!
