Have just returned from an amazing 2 weeks at Surya Lanka, feeling totally cleansed and energised. All my aches and pains are gone, stress levels are at an all- time low and I feel powerful in both my body and mind. The location was stunning with a beautiful clean beach, the garden wonderfully relaxing and the entire staff always friendly and flexible. The treatments were not the usual"spa" ones - some were quite intense (virechana !)but these took place during the middle of my stay so I had enough time during the remainder of my stay to build up my strength and feel balanced. Many thanks to the entire staff for helping me regain my power and peace of mind.I will surely be back for more next year!
I had a blissful experience during my stay at the Surya Lanka Ayurvedic resort. The room was very well kept, spacious and equipped with all the comforts I needed. The highlight of my trip was definitely the amazing staff. They were so kind and I felt very well looked after yet not intrusive which was what I wanted during my Ayurvedic retreat. The food is exceptional. Being a complete vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly impressed by the options offered. It was some of the best food I had in Sri Lanka. Lastly, the location is unmatched with a delightful oceanfront setting and well kept gardens. Amazing for a peaceful stroll in the evenings. I am very grateful to everyone at the Surya Lanka Ayurvedic resort for my stay and look forward to visiting again in the future.…
After reading all the positive reviews on Tripadvisor, and receiving good service from the hotel’s off-site Reservation Department, I chose Suraya Lanka for a 20 day Ayurveda Retreat. I have visited various Ayurveda resorts in the past 10 years - this hotel was by far the worst Ayurveda Hotel I have ever been to – so much so that I checked out after 3 days. I brought my complaints to the Manager’s attention shortly after Check In – his attitude was unapologetic, no-care, defensive and arrogant, which I found unacceptable. I don’t know if my complaints relate to Covid matters, or perhaps they were short staffed and key personnel absent or something, but here is the rundown: The Good - The hotel fronts a long and clean beach where one can swim safely. No beachboys and no major currents – this is definitely the best point of this hotel. - Beautiful manicured garden and grounds. - Very good off-site Reservation/Sales department – they were quick, accommodating and even offered a free upgrade. - The transfer from the airport to the hotel went smooth. - Restaurant staff friendly and accommodating and doing their best to please within the limitations set by management. The Bad - Very limited buffet for lunch and dinner, unappetising and poorly presented with no description of dish/ingredients or mention of suitability for different body types. Food is very important in Ayurveda and to present a buffet without any description or details of ingredients/ suitability for different dosha’s are not minimum standard practice. When I asked the Manager about the he had a vague excuse that the chef and waiters knows who can eat what… yet everybody eats the same unidentifiable curry, and they don’t even know what is my room number – how would they know my dosha/ diet restrictions? - Local restaurant right next to the resort and the “premier” “New Wing” rooms – woke up at 3am with drunk people screaming and shouting. - Even the premier “New Wing” rooms are very stuffy with no fresh air. A single bed Mosquito net is used to cover a King bed, which makes it impossible to sleep under – it is very claustrophobic, and unhygienic – because your body touch the net at any given point. When I complained they replace the net with another single net, this time with what looked like blood splatters. When I again complained again the Chief Housekeeper became very defensive and said there is nothing wrong it is just “rust”. I demanded a new net - they then bought and installed a slighter bigger net – but still not large enough. - Housekeeping not up to standard and no attention to detail. Dirty cups outside my room for 2 days, no flowers in room or on bed, nor anything special in the room, no nicely folded towels – just the bare minimum – clearly no love lost. - Pool area is unattractive and uninviting – only one pool lounger with a wet cushion and nowhere else to sit. - Treatment/Spa area unattractive and uninviting – lacks atmosphere. Staff speak loudly elsewhere during treatments, and little privacy and tranquillity. - Actual treatment not on par with other Ayurveda centres – My treatment of only one hour included a poorly executed massage. When I asked the doctor about this she confirmed that the general daily treatments are +- 1.5 hours - instead of the general 2.5-3 hours treatments elsewhere. - Atmosphere – the place has a strange and hostile atmosphere. The in-room Welcome File specifies that one should avoid “over talking” with other guests, and complaints should not be discussed at the dinner table but with management… then it is also specified that you get a table number and you should only sit at that table and not join other guest at their tables, without the hotel’s permission?? And then the dinner tables are set up in classroom-style rows with backs facing the row behind – feels very cold and strange. - Rip Off – what I was quoted and agreed on was not charged. At Check Out I received a full bill for the nights stayed and the 1 day’s bad treatment (although the Manager was well aware that I spent very little time in the hotel in search for a more suitable alternative). The “Spring Discount” and “Special Discount” which was quoted and agreed upon also disappeared and I was charged the full rack rate. I did not expect a free-bee but I certainly did not travel 22 hours specifically for an Ayurveda Retreat to land up at an hotel and receive in 3 days 1 bad 1 hour treatment. The bill was presented without any apology or token of compensation for the inconvenience, to the contrary - I was also forced to use their inhouse vehicle and charged Euro 20 to drive me a short distance to inspect alternative accommodation – which is far more than the going taxi rate. To add insult to injury, their Confirmation Form stipulates a discount if the bill is settled in cash. My total bill included a 20Euro for their car. Although management was aware that I am an unhappy customer with valid complaints brought to their attention on Day 1, they (in a petty way) informed me that the discount does not apply on the Euro 20…. For the amount of Euro 1.50! Terrible customer service! - Management’s attitude – before I left I explained to the manager in detail what my complaints are – he brushed this off in a defensive manner. When I left the premises carrying my own bags I passed the owner, who was aware that I am an unhappy customer – and she made no effort whatsoever to apologise, talk to me or to try resolve my complaints. In retrospect I should have left Suraya Lanka on day 1 and not wasted Euro 500 to spend an unpleasant 3 days at their below average facility to give them a chance to resolve their issues – because the complaints fell on deaf ears and they don’t understand customer service. I am happy to report that I spent the remainder of my holiday at another far superior Ayurveda Resort ( Barberyn Beach) which was fantastic in every regard, and 5 stars in comparison to Suraya Lanka’s 2 star, at more or less the same price.…
Lovely resort with great staff. Food and treatment were exceptional. Lovely beach room but pretty basic for the price (very high for Sri Lanka) The resort uses far too much plastic. The beach is stunning but depressing as it is covered in plastic and other rubbish. It would cost so little for the business along the beach employ beach cleaners. One member of staff, for example, spent the whole day sweeping around the pool staring at young women. I’d put him on the beach! Why not some signs telling people not to litter?
As part of an intensive and extensive healing program, we spent almost 3 weeks at Surya Lanka for the second time in November 2021. The reception at Surya Lanka was extremely warm. The medical care and massages by therapists and doctors went perfectly and was characterized by great kindness and helpfulness. The entire staff is also extremely helpful and amiable. The hotel complex, which is located directly on the beach, the garden and the bungalows are very clean and well maintained. Immediately in front of our bungalow we observed the beautiful wildlife daily, which made our rest times very entertaining. The food tasted fantastic and was varied. We again felt very comfortable and will come again!
