We stayed here in July 2013. Don't be put off by the rather industrial buildings, that's from a previous use of the building. Otherwise this hotel is exactly as advertised. The location isn't great if you want to get out and about but the hotel...More
I stayed at Castellamare Crowne Plaza last week for 5 days to 25th July and this is the 6th year I come back. I think this is a "hidden jewel" hotel with a splendid position and great overall service. The views over the Vesuvius are...More
Don't be put off by the fact that this hotel was previously an old cement factory!! The transformation is very impressive. The location mid way between Naples and Sorrento is ideal with an impressive view of Vesuvius across the bay. Parking could not be easier...More

This four star hotel is a perfect place to stay in if you want to explore the area by car. There is nothing surprisingly good in it, nor surprisingly bad. The rooms are clean and the 15 euros breakfast is quite good. But if you...More

Hi, the excursions the hotel run are expensive - some of them can be done much cheaper on your own. Pompeii and Ercolano are on the train route from Vico Equense. We took a trip to Capri organised by the hotel. I think it was around 110 Euros per person. Later, in Sorrento I noticed boat trips from there to Capri are 80 Euros. You can easily get to Sorrento from Vico Equense, less than 10 Euros return per person and around 4 stops. NB - get to Capri as early as possible.... it gets VERY busy. The Amalfi Coast boat trip we also took with the hotel - I think around 90 Euros each? Very enjoyable and I think value for money. There is a frustrating element of the hotel boat trips though... we were collected by speed boat from the hotel and taken to Piano. There, passengers get off the boat and have to register/show their tickets at a ticket office. With the first excursion we were waiting 1 hour before all passengers had been gathered for our trip. The second trip, just short of 2 hours. It's hard to understand what the delays are all about. Possibly something to do with Italian time :-). Hope this information is helpful. Enjoy.

Hi, I cannot help you with the driving questions as we didn't drive. However, the coastal road between Naples and Sorrento is very busy this time of year. Positano, Amalfi and Capri are also extremely busy. I would advise getting to these places early in the day before the crowds. Sorrento seemed less crowded. It's a very lovely part of the world. Enjoy :-)

We had a rental car and my husband found it easy to navigate (that being said the roads are small, Italian drivers are aggressive, and I personally was nervous) But my husband drives a corvette at home so he is used to a small car and moving fast and aggressive in it. If your husband is a confidant driver you should have no problems. I do recommend the rental car. We did some tours during our stay and I have to say, I trusted my husbands driving over theirs.
Positano is just 15-20 minutes south of the hotel, a very beautiful scenic drive and a wonderful place to visit. People in the southern part of Italy are the friendliest I have ever met and the food and shops are wonderful.
As far as places to see and visit I highly recommend taking the tour of Pompeii, they offer a package at the hotel and the tour and guide was great. We came home with wonderful photos and more knowledge than I thought possible about this lovely city that was almost destroyed.
For a romantic day I recommend taking the boat to the aisle of Capri and visiting the island and taking the boat for the blue grotto tour into the caves. It was picturesque Italy and I can't wait to go back.
I hope this review gave you some ideas. I loved the hotel and the touring spots but will tell you that you need to make sure you start booking these things almost as soon a you arrive. We missed a few opportunities because we waited to long.
