The elegant five-star hotel, located in Tuscany's Maremma region, was built in the mid-1960s as a love nest for Michael and Patricia Graham and it is today part of The Leading Hotels of the World. The home, called Il Pellicano as a tribute to the first time the couple met at Pelican Point in California, was initially a club for the Grahams' friends, but was subsequently expanded and opened to friends of friends. However, a few things remained the same: the pleasure of feeling at home and the glamorous and slightly retro atmosphere. The hotel's discrete luxury and the still-rugged Tuscan countryside attract the international jet set. Today, the cottages and the central building are suspended between the sky and the sea, with large rooms, windows and terraces where it's unclear where the indoors end and the outdoors begin. There are pathways and stairways, fragrant gardens and discrete corners, a restaurant with one Michelin stars and three Gambero Rosso forks, a heated sea-water swimming pool, a spa with a sea view to soothe both the body and the soul, and for those wanting to take a dip in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a white platform with chaise longue and immaculate parasols.

When I decide to go to dinner at Il Pellicano it means I want to feel good.
What an atmosphere! Right lighting, discretion, warm welcome of the legendary barman Federico Morosi who made me taste his Titian accompanied by three delicious amouse holes...
I chose the tasting menu with a five-course option.
I relied on my “assistant” PierMarco, who suggested and guided me in this unique gastronomic journey.
Fantastic starters, followed by soft potatoes with red shrimp from Mazara, and then stuffed squid ... I don't want to describe dish after dish .. the photos speak for themselves and certainly can not express the balanced taste of gourmet cuisine without extremism and exaggeration. In this place the guest is pampered, followed, entertained the right. Balance, professionalism and discretion all with plenty of love for the kitchen and the “customer” and extremely refined live music. What about it? Thank you. Thanks to Michelin Starred Chef Gioia, his colleague Giuseppe Cavallato, Pastry Chef Vito Di Anna Pier Marco who assisted me, Susa and Fabrizio Bai for the music ..
Experience to repeat!

The property enjoys a spectacular view. With my wife we have traveled a lot and in places of level but this probably, until now, remains the best. Excellence is breathed from the reception: kind, smiling, professional staff, easygoing and not at all cast. Care is everywhere: in the spotless and manicured rooms, in the cypresses and rosemary bushes that look like sculptures. The food is great. The bistro at the beach club offers hearty and delicious dishes (try the club sandwich, you can eat comfortably in two). Michelin restaurant with a good proposal, Pelligrill that offers the classics of Italian cuisine with the highest quality ingredients. Crystal clear sea. Try the cocktails: in particular the legendary pelican martini.
To return, again and again. When we talk about Italian excellence in the way I think of places like this.

Il Pellicano is truly a luxurious hotel on the seaside. I traveled here with my husband and two teenagers, and we all enjoyed a relaxing stay. The room was extremely comfortable and clean, with good beds, plenty of space, and all amenities provided. Breakfast was very good. The staff was excellent with communicating prior to arrival and during our stay, and was very friendly. The hotel is extremely expensive and the reason to spend to stay here is really the position of the property on the seafront with easy access to the most beautifully clear, warm water. We spent most of our stay in the ocean, happily bobbing around on a noodle or raft. Lunch was ok - not as good as I'd expect. A few criticisms/suggestions: purchase a few more rafts - four is not enough; control the beach chairs better by posting a staff member at the base of the steps to greet guests. Other guests took our chairs while we were in the water, and instead of staff removing them, they set up new chairs next to our old ones. This was fine - but caused some stress for us and was avoidable. Finally, we appreciated the use of a shower by the pool area after our checkout, but there was no shampoo or conditioner provided in the shower. Otherwise, except for cost, there is no reason not to stay here!

We have spent our second stay at il Pellicano, four gorgeous days in July 2024. We were three friends and had the Garden Junior Suite F5. It has a big bathroom with two sinks, bathtub and walk-in shower in the typical Pellicano style. The suite has a nice walk-in closet, a living room opened to the bedroom. Outside it has a big terrace with sunbeds.

What we love of the Il Pellicano is its style. The rosemary bushes are trimmed like clouds. The entire resort, the restaurants, pool, beach, Guests (and even the wasps) seem to be more stylish than in other hotels. You can somehow still feel the old golden times. The staff is extremely friendly and committed in making each guest feel comfortable.

We especially loved the lobby, the bar and the piano, live music filling the rooms and the air makes a special atmosphere. And, when you’re at the pool and hear the open bar speakers playing Mia Martini “Almeno tu nell’Universo”, then you know, this hotel has style.

We also appreciate the children policy. I think minimum age starts at 10. Please dear Management of the Pellicano, don’t lower again the minimum age (sorry families, but without small children it’s indeed more pleasant).

Grazie e a presto

I wanted to love this hotel — after a few years of seeing it everywhere — but just didn’t. The grounds are beautiful but the service is lacking. It’s the little things that make a hotel feel luxurious and this one doesn’t have them. Absolutely everything felt transactional — when a shirt needed a quick press coming out the suitcase and we called for an iron or steamer we were told there are none on premises but we can pay for it to be pressed and returned tomorrow. Not helpful when I want to wear it tonight. This is also the only hotel in all our stays in Italy where cocktails do not come with snacks of some sort complimentary. At this price point, the last thing a guest should feel is that the hotel is nickel and diming. I’m glad we went to experience it, but wouldn’t return.

Il Pellicano Hotel is nothing short of a Mediterranean jewel. Nestled along the Tuscan coast, it offers an enchanting blend of Italian elegance and laid-back luxury. Guests are treated to breathtaking views of the azure sea, surrounded by lush terraced gardens, all while enjoying world-class service. Its exquisite design, paired with delectable cuisine and a rich history, makes Il Pellicano not just a hotel, but a unique experience that lingers in the memories of its guests, long after their stay. Truly, it embodies the essence of la dolce vita.

The service at Il Pellicano Hotel was truly faultless. From the moment we arrived to the second we bid farewell, every detail was meticulously taken care of. The staff, with their warm smiles and exceptional professionalism, anticipated our every need and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was nothing short of perfect. It's a rare and delightful experience to find such unwavering dedication to excellence in service, making our time at Il Pellicano unforgettable.

Special shoutout to our amazing bar waiter Bernardo!

I spent 3 nights at Il Pellicano and I absolutely loved the property it but it could use some improvement. The room was comfortable, toiletries were great, and so were the linens. Housekeeping did a great job and I really enjoyed the little daily gift they would leave. It's a nice touch. The property is breathtaking, beach club area and the pool staff were very nice, so is everyone at the SPA. Restaurant service is VERY Inconsistent. Some of the staff are great others are lost.I also think it's a language barrier, but a hotel of this caliber should not have this issue. I was told to make a reservations for the restaurants when I checked in. So I did, when I arrived for my first dinner they couldn't find the reservation I had made 1 hour ago and kept asking if I was guest in the hotel, after that she kept asking if I was dining solo. The hostess literally asked that 3 times, she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that I was traveling alone. And everyday I would see that hostess she would again say just one again. The food at Pelligrill is average, when I went for lunch I had asked what a dish was and the waitress replied it's a sweet pig, when the dish arrived it was a plate of Prosciutto with cheese. That was not what was on the menu. One day I had lunch in the bar area and they took to 20 minutes to acknowledge me then another 20 minutes to bring the check only for it to be under the wrong name. At that point I got up and just went to bar to get my bill. Their Michelin star restaurant was very good but service inconsistent some waiters were great other left a lot to be desired and the presentation was inconsistent. One night I ordered beef tartare and the presentation was spectacular it came out in the mise en place and it was prepped in front of me the following night it came ready out of the kitchen. Breakfast service was the same. Some days it was great the other days it took 20 minutes for them to come get my coffee order. The dining service is a little too lax. And thing is there seems to be enough staff it's just that they aren't alert. I will say the staff at the SPA were great. I loved the property and the fact that there really isn't anything to do other then to relax.

In one word: paradise. There’s no better property to visit for a relaxing, magical experience. The water of the Tyrrhenian Sea is clear and cool. The salt water pool is inviting. The bars (2) and restaurants (2) will take care of your every wish (just give the chef a day’s notice for a special request and voilà). The staff will know you by name and room number. The spa is delightful and the boutique is chic. The clientele is chicer still. Actors, Hollywood directors, famous photographers: they come to Pellicano to escape the world and the laypeople leave them alone. Pretend you’re one of them; it won’t be hard surrounded by such luxury!

Il Pellicano is in an isolated location near Porto Ercole, in a hillside valley flowing down to the sea. The rooms with a sea view are excellent. The landscaping dropping down to the water is lush and very well maintained. The pool (77 degrees) is nice, and very swimmable, but would be best in a little warmer weather. The sea water is rather cold this time of year, but it was still pleasant to sit on lounge chairs at the “beach”. (It’s sand-colored concrete with ladders to the sea). A few brave souls swam. The restaurants are excellent and the staff is very accommodating The location is a bit remote so it is a great place to just stay and enjoy the hotel grounds, though there are sights within an hour drive. There is also a real beach (though a bit rocky) very close by.

If you have a fantasy of a hotel by the sea in Italy, maybe based on movies from the early 60s, il Pellicano will probably fulfil if if not exceed it. It’s that good. The location is stunning, with views of the Med from all the public spaces as well as the bedrooms. The architecture is warm and engaging, orange walls with jasmine and bougainvillea and tiled roofs. Our room (24) was large with an outdoor terrace and a well equipped bathroom. Decor was either restrained elegance or slightly old fashioned, depending on your sense of aesthetics but very relaxing, either way. We ate at the Pellegrill, the less formal of the two restaurants. Not extraordinary but very enjoyable. The beach is lovely, with plenty of sun beds and attentive staff and the swimming pool Is a great spot for late afternoon when the sun is going down on the beach. Every member of staff was friendly, professional and charming. Our only complaint, genuinely, was having to leave. Is it expensive? Extremely. Is it worth it? Every penny.

Yes though really July thru September is the time to go when the weather (and the water) heats up! That being said, you’ll probably avoid higher prices (and airport crowds) in May shoulder season.
