Really beautiful hotel, we had room 523 a junior suite facing the ocean which was beautiful. You could hear the lift a bit but if you close the door to the bedroom this was less and we wear ear plugs. Overall staff are very friendly, there is one older guy who works at lunch place by the pool and at The Restaurant in the evening (he takes the orders wears all black) who is a bit grumpy which does not aid in the overall pleasant experience. One major issue is smoking, if you don’t smoke and want to sit outside for dinner or breakfast you could be seated next to smokers which is disgusting. The hotel is very beautiful and the pool is great, very deep and great to swim in, not too much chlorine as they heat the sea water. Most of the staff like reception and cleaners, pool staff are very welcoming, helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet is served by staff at the moment due to corona and they take corona seriously with masks and spraying things down. Would recommend but the smoking and grumpy staff /waiters should improve. Also at the pool bar restaurant is not serving pizza /focaccia which means the menu is a bit limited .

We are at the Hotel now for 3 nights and absolutely love it. We appreciate the ago of 150 Years and the fact that one family has owned this hotel that entire time. Our room is large and glorious with huge windows
That open to the city of Sanremo. The bathroom is a special treat that can not be replicated in new Hôtel structures. Large & completely marble and again the large Windows that open …. Yes the room has padded wallpaper and yards of drapes but that was the era and it is all done in good taste. The bed is very comfortable with crisp cotton white bedding.
Breakfast which is included in the price is served as a lovely buffet in their ballroom with Murano Glass chandeliers and Murano Flowers all along her ceiling molding. Again all white fabric chairs and linens. The B’fast is delicious ..
The position of the hotel is overlooking the sea across the street from the beach. And Easy walk into pedestrian shopping area 10 min away. We can not think of 1 thing to criticize here. Oh and I forget to mention the lovely newly upgraded Spa facilities. 👍🏻 also great and a small and well Pointed gym. Can’t miss and the value for money is excellent now. Thank You !! We had a perfect stay !

OK, my room was rather small, but for the price I paid at this hotel (usually when I want to book it is always over 200 Euros a night) it was the least of my worries. I must congratulate Ivan, the Maitre'D at breakfast, whom I watched in amazement when I realized that he didn't miss anything... if a guest was needing an extra spoon or a glass, he hurried to their table with one before they could even try to ask one of the waiters! Yes, during covid times, it is not business as usual, and everyone is trying to adjust, but I had not experienced such constant attention in a long time in any hotel! Also Paula at reception and all the other staff were extra pleasant and helpful. I would stay there just for the experience of being at a hotel that has perfected hospitality.

Lovely, traditional hotel. We booked a classic room facing the sea and got an upgrade to a superior room which is one of the more modern renovated rooms on the 4th floor. Fresh towels and water every day. The hotel staff was very welcoming, helpful and friendly throughout the whole 5 night stay. Although the hotel was fully booked we always found a nice spot by the pool or on the beach. Hotel parking: for free or Euro 17.- per night: covered. We truly enjoyed our stay at the Royal Hotel Sanremo and would consider going back. Due to covid, the spa and gym were closed and some other restrictions were put in place: such as no dinner and live music served by the pool. A must: to book a room facing the sea, otherwise you look onto the parking area.

The hotel is lovely, beautiful interior. We had a top floor suite that was extremely comfortable on all levels.
The pool area badly needs an uplift, tiles and stones are cracked, missing, dangerously damaged, I managed to cut my foot on 2 separate occasions, please get rid of the diving board; its a dangerous nuisance. Pool restaurant is very poor, very long wait for what turned out to be cold dishes on 2 occasions Very expensive for food and drinks. Far better to take a 5 minute stroll into town for a large selection of much better restaurants for lunch.

Response from Marco Sarlo, Agenzia/Consulente at Royal Hotel Sanremo
Responded 21 Aug 2020
Dear Guest, I refer to your review concerning your one-night stay in July at the Royal Hotel Sanremo. I would like to thank you very much for your preference and for taking time to share your experience. We constantly strive to meet our clients’ needs and expectations and both positive and negative comments are welcome to improve our standards. We are aware that first class treatment, high level of comfort and facilities, genuine hospitality and professionalism are expected. We devote many efforts and passion to keep our 148-year old property always appealing and to provide our clients an exclusive and emotional experience. I am delighted to learn that you love our property, its interior and the accommodation you had on the top floor. At the same I took note of the negative issues you put in evidence and I am sorry about that. Please allow me to send you my comments after checking with the Departments concerned. As for the seawater swimming-pool, heated to 27°C and set in our quiet subtropical park of 16,000 sq m, it was designed by the famous Architect Giò Ponti and built by a company specializing in dams during the years of the reconstruction of Italy. It was one of the first seawater swimming-pools in Europe, inaugurated in 1948, and is therefore a historic, exclusive and prestigious architectural work, as is the hotel. The reinforced concrete structure is covered with 2 x 2 cm ceramic mosaic tiles of different shades of aquamarine blue that reproduce the effect of the emerald blue of the Caribbean Sea, with local stones of various sizes cleverly inserted into the mosaic and the supporting structure. Every year we dedicate no less than 40,000 Euros, which represents an important part of our budget, for its maintenance and for that of the surrounding area, including the plants. In addition to this conservative intervention, its reconstruction, in collaboration with the Foundation of the same name based in Milan and respecting its original architecture, has been included in our investment plan. I sincerely regret for the small incidents that occurred to your foot and of which we were unaware. With regard to the pool Restaurant “Corallina”, please consider that due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus, which I, like everyone else, hope will not last long, spacing measures are mandatory and new protocols have been introduced in the different areas of the hotel in accordance with national decrees and the indications from the World Health Organization. The employees have also received specific training to avoid any type of contact. In Italy the matter has been taken very seriously and, fortunately, the decrees do not leave any possibility of derogation. We apologize for any inconvenience due to the management of the guidelines that we follow very carefully for the safety of our guests and our team. As a result, we were unable to open the buffet lunch by the pool because the health and spacing regulations didn’t guarantee the required spacing. Lunch with à la carte menu probably has slower service. However, we prefer a few small complaints from our clients for not being able to use a service rather than putting the safety of our guests and staff at risk. Regarding food and drinks that you consider expensive, I kindly let you know that our rates are all in line with the ones of our Italian and French competitors, including the Principality of Monaco, as we keep them under control with our constant online tracking and monitoring. Our pricing strategy and policy are absolutely fair as an integral part of all our transparent sales and marketing actions. Of course you can't compare the prices of a normal restaurant in the town with a restaurant in a luxury hotel. It is really a pity that you didn’t express your feeling of dissatisfaction with clear evidence to the staff. When some problems arise, we are always available to assist our clients assertively and listen to their needs. Whenever possible we are also willing to anticipate the requests of our regular guests. However, sometimes, despite all our efforts, any inconvenience may always arise. Finally, I take the opportunity to update you in a more extensive way. Our clients’ satisfaction represents our priority. In addition to annual renovations, team trainee courses are organised up to 4,200 working hours per year testifying our constant commitment to pursue maximum efficiency. The staff is trained to provide an impeccable service as well as to develop a genuine sense of belonging and brand identity. If necessary, I act promptly and in the most appropriate way with the team members to make them realize how important are professionalism and efficiency in serving our guests in a manner consistent with their role and the quality standards of “The Leading Hotels of the World” and the high hotel industry, in order to avoid negative occurrences. Feeling confident that our position has been clarified, I would be delighted to welcome you again in the future assuring you that we will do the utmost to make your stay most enjoyable. In the meantime, I wish you a lovely continuation of the season with warm regards from sunny Sanremo. Marco Sarlo Management Consultant

Stayed at the hotel on a family holiday with my daughters in 2 separate rooms. The hotel was in a great location, very close to the town centre and beach for all the necessaries, only issue is you need to book sun beds on the beach which are Euro 40 for 2 per a day. Staff at the hotel were really welcoming and hospitable and helped us with our every need. The WIFI coverage across the hotel was excellent which is a must for everybody these days so no complaints.

The rooms we stayed in were a good size, all recently renovated to a high standard so there were no issues with accommodation, however the pool could do with some attention as it was tiered. Breakfast, if you want to sit outside our recommendation would be to get to the breakfast buffet before 09.00 to get a table. On the food itself there was a wide selection of both hot and cold food, the only things missing for us was watermelon and Parma ham.

Overall, would come back again.

This is the kind of place with huge potential where you kind of shake your head because they just don’t seem to get how off the mark they are. They may have been something special in the past, they may have a fancy chef from Tuscany, they may have some wonky pool design from the 70s, they may say that they have super trained staff – but believe me, this is no more than a dilapidated 3.5 star experience - this is not luxury. Service in general is just very basic and sometimes unwelcoming. The exception is the pool staff and porters - but they work for tips. Most demoralising is the food – the scallops & the bass were overcooked – breakfast is just not that inspired. When you feel that your own modest cooking skills could be more tasteful than the restaurant you know you’re eating something quite basic with no refinement. We ate much better Ligurian cuisine in town. The place is so run down, the pool could use a good sweep and cleaning, the carpet on the stairs is so cheap and poorly laid that everyone is tripping on it. This is probably one of the better hotels in Sanremo - but a low bar considering what you can get in the region for the same price. We will not be returning.

Dear Client, I refer to your review concerning your recent stay at the Royal Hotel Sanremo. I thank you very much for your preference and for taking time to share your experience. We constantly strive to meet our clients’ needs and expectations and both positive and negative comments are welcome to improve our standards. We are aware that first class treatment, high level of comfort and facilities, genuine hospitality and professionalism are expected. We devote many efforts and passion to keep our 149-year old property always appealing and to provide our clients an exclusive and emotional experience. I took note of the negative issues you put in evidence and I am sorry about that. Please allow me to send you my notes after checking with the Departments concerned. You booked directly with the hotel a superior double room with sea view from August 5th to 8th at the daily rate of 599,00 euros with buffet breakfast. On arrival you have been assigned room n. 320. With regard to the seawater swimming-pool, heated to 27°C and set in our quiet subtropical park of 16,000 sq m, it was designed by Gio Ponti and built by a company specializing in dams during the years of the reconstruction of Italy. It was one of the first seawater swimming-pools in Europe, inaugurated in 1948, and is therefore a historic and exclusive architectural work. In addition to this conservative intervention, its reconstruction, in collaboration with the Foundation of the same name based in Milan and respecting its original style, has been included in our investment plan. Concerning the buffet breakfast, it is highly appreciated even from the most demaning international guests and we always receive many compliments on it. It consists of 150 different hot, cold, savoury and sweet dishes including: olive oil bread, five-cereal bread, wholemeal bread, milk bread, olive bread, raisin sandwich loaf, white French loaf, flour type “0” bread, typical focaccia bread, rusks, selection of buns, pastries and fancy biscuits, tarts served with jams and marmalades, honeys, Nutella, Italian and foreign butters, margarine; All Bran, Corn Flakes, chocolate Corn Flakes, extra Classic Muesli, Extra Muesli Fruit Magic, Extra Belgian Chocolate and Hazelnut Muesli, Rice Krispies, porridge, gluten-free Corn Flakes; gluten free pancakes with maple syrup, jam or Nutella; natural yoghurt, fruit yoghurt, low-fat natural yoghurt and low fat fruit yoghurt; marinated salmon, cooked ham, salami Milano and mortadella, turkey breast; Bel Paese, Babybel, Emmenthal, Fontina cheese; orange and grapefruit freshly squeezed juices, sparkling wine; fruit in season; fruit compote; vegetables; hot dishes as string beans with tomato sauce, potato rösti. Plus our organic corner: jam tartlets, salt brown rice biscuits, no salt brown rice biscuits, sugar-free kamut rusks, sugar-free jams and marmalades, honey, whole milk, soy milk, rice milk, lactose-free milk, natural whole milk yoghurt, whole milk fruit yoghurt, low-fat natural yoghurt, low-fat fruit yoghurt, soy yoghurt, lactose-free yoghurt. Over the years, we have also considerably expanded our offer regarding eggs and omelette, on request, with direct order at the table: No 2 soft boiled eggs (4 minutes), fried eggs, fried eggs with ham or bacon, plain omelette, ham omelette, cheese omelette, vegetable omelette, mushroom omelette, egg white omelette, egg white omelette with cherry jam, egg white omelette with red berry jam. Further to this, a rich cafeteria and a wide choice of beverages are available, while other dishes are à la carte. The Covid protocol has imposed major constraints on the presentation of the buffet which is served by our staff to avoid contamination. This unfortunately has also had an impact on aesthetics, but we prefer to safeguard health and safety of our clients and team which are a priority. I regret that you didn’t appreciate the dinner you had at the Restaurant Fiori di Murano. Since June 1st, we have served without receiving a complaint 160 dishes of scallops, the most popular fish starter, and 246 of sea bass fillet, the most requested fish steak. You consumed the courses entirely and you made no complaints to the Maître on duty or the Reception staff. For your comment on tips, I would like to point out that in Italy, according to the national contract, staff are paid a monthly salary including the pension and health fund. The thirteenth and fourteenth month are paid and at the end of the employment relationship there is a payment corresponding to an extra month for each year worked. As per the national and company contract, it is forbidden to ask clients for tips. It is a tradition in hotels, as in many parts of the world, for a particularly satisfied guest to elegantly give a tip that can be accepted by the employee. To claim that our pool employees and porters work well for a tip is particularly unfair and quite hateful and undermines the dignity of the workers. Our rates that we constantly monitor are in line with the ones of our Italian and French competitors, including Monaco. Our tariff strategy is part of our sales and marketing actions. Referring to quality levels, please consider that our hotel has always been rated 5-star luxury and it is certified annually by the mistery guest of the “The Leading Hotels of the World” who carries out the anonymous inspection to assess compliance with the strict standards. The latest audit took place on August 6th and 7th and everything was found to be in perfect line. It is a pity that you didn’t express your criticism to the team during your stay. Customer satisfaction is our priority. We are always willing to assist our clients in an assertive way and whenever possible to anticipate the requests of our regular guests. However, problems can occur sometimes, despite our efforts, especially during peak season. Your opinion is of course legitimate, but questionable and in contrast to the great majority of positive feedback posted on social networks which have allowed us to achieve high ratings. From your reviews we can see that you have a lot of experience in the luxury segment. There are some good standard chain hotels and a few inns and brasseries. Readers and experienced travellers will be able to evaluate your comments objectively. Feeling confident that our position has been clarified, I would be delighted to welcome you again in the future assuring you that we will do the utmost to make your stay very enjoyable. In the meantime, I wish you a lovely continuation of the summer season with warm regards from sunny Sanremo. Marco Sarlo Management Consultant

A beautiful hotel with a lot of good soft service but unfortunately not enough, in order to rate it with five points. Location is excellent. Outdoor pool and garden are very lovely. We loved the breakfast buffet and the service of staff. What an experience to sit on the terrace and enjoy the breakfast every morning with that view and that mild climate. After being a Leaders club member for over 14 years and visiting many many leading hotels around the world one thing I have noticed is that a very good breakfast experience is so often hard to offer. At this hotel they nailed it for three days. The fourth day we had breakfast in room and that did NOT meet our expectations. The bread option was not so good and no cheese platter or similar was served. But it was delivered on time and by a very polite man.

On the last evening I called room service and for the first time ever something odd happened. The man who answered the phone told me he would call me back. About five minutes later he calls back and takes the order. This was pretty strange and also he did neither apologize for the inconvenience when he answered nor when he called back.

We had a Junior suite mountain view and a Superior room with sea view and balcony. Both of them were very lovely. One strange thing…It was the first time there was no paper and pen in the room. One of the rooms had tissues in the bathroom and the other did not. When one of us forgot the slippers by the pool, the room attendant did not replace them with a new pair by the bed (which other Leading hotels normally would do).

Do not waste your money and time going to the poolside restaurant. The prices are too high and service not good enough. Several excellent places for lunch or dinner are a short walk from the hotel.

The front desk team are very good!

The team at the front door helping with the luggage and car park are also very very good!

A big plus is that the parking for your car is for free if you choose the side with no roof. The one with roof, 17€/night.

Unfortunately did not have the chance to try the SPA, will do that next time :)

Such a bad service for a 5*L. We arrived, no one to get our luggages and at no point someone offered to take them to the room. When we called for room service for breakfast, no answer. After 6 calls we decided to get to the lobby for breakfast service, we were in our bathrobes and came to order directly to be delivered to the room. We learnt we couldn’t order what we were seeing on the buffet without explanation. Such a bad first and last impression of this hotel. I strongly suggest to not stay there if you’re looking for service. Other than that, it is an average 4 star level.

This old and traditional hotel is now over the edge - too old. The roomes, which are not renovated are a desaster, the smell is old and overloaded ant the service at breakfast-time is a horror. They are arrogant, lazy and unfriendly. We had breakfast on the terrasse and we had to serve our breakfat by ourselve!! The ashtrees are full of cigarettes and cigars from the evening before and the buffet had the quality of a 3 star hotel. The food for dinner was only expensive - not more.
So we left after one night and we are completely shure, that we never want to stay in that hotel. NEVER!!

Dear Client, I refer to your review concerning your stay at the Royal Hotel Sanremo. I thank you very much for your preference and for taking time to share your experience. Feedbacks help us improve our standards. I took note of the negative issues you put in evidence, and I am sorry about that. Please allow me to send you my notes after checking with the Departments concerned. You booked through our website choosing a “non refundable” discounted rate for a double room with sea view for one night at the beginning of May. Our property, celebrating its 150th Anniversary, is rich in history and tradition, has its own style which differs from a hotel chain or a new one. This feature gives it a timeless charm many discerning travellers with correct expectations love and look for, becoming our regular guests. The rooms are spacious and luminous, with spectacular views, and well-furnished with all modern conveniences. Every year, we plan important renovation works of rooms, internal and external common areas during our closing months in fall and winter, even during the pandemic, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to improve the level of comfort. We regret to learn that you didn’t appreciate our rich buffet breakfast for which we continuously receive several compliments from the most demanding international guests, since it consists of 150 different hot, cold, savory and sweet dishes, and a rich cafeteria. Since many years, the breakfast service on our outside terrace is served from the last week in May until the middle of October. However, after your insistence to have your breakfast outdoor, our staff fulfilled your request and provided a tray, but obviously the tables on the terrace are not set yet and prepared with table linen and cutlery. Further to this, we are not aware that the terrace was soiled or that the ashtray’s were full. Accurate cleaning is carried out during the night and continued during the day. Therefore, we very much doubt that in the morning you would have found a mess and the ash trays full. Your remarks regarding the food and its price are unjustified and incomprehensible since we do not register that you had dinner in one of our restaurants. Unfortunately, the few hours you stayed in our hotel are insufficient for even the most experienced to be able to make an objective judgement. In fact, we recently received a mystery guest visit from The Leading Hotels of the World, which is carried out by a real expert, lasts three days, and the rating obtained is above average. The staff is trained to provide our clients an impeccable service as well as to develop a genuine sense of belonging and brand identity. If necessary, I act promptly and in the most appropriate way with the team members to make them realize how important are professionalism, efficiency, courtesy and care of details in serving our guests. In light of the above considerations, I believe that your point of view is certainly legitimate, but questionable and in contrast with the positive feedbacks of numerous clients and the majority of online reviews and I am sure that readers will be able to evaluate your comments objectively. Feeling confident that our position has been clarified, I would be delighted to welcome you again in the future, assuring you that we will do the utmost to make your experience most enjoyable. Mine did not have. There is a bar that serves tea, coffee and drinks on the ground floor. You may want to call the hotel and ask them. Most of the staff speak English.
