Visited Argeles sur mer several times and now stayed at the Auberge du Roua a third time. This place cannot be beaten in the area, it is outstanding and the host Magalie, attention to detail throughout is to be commended. The photos published are exactly what is available, the rooms are very clean and comfortable beds with excellent bathroom areas. A small fridge is supplied. The rooms are cleaned daily. Albeit the restaurant has now been outsourced the standard is still excellent.

We loved this hotel. There was a lovely pool by a large garden with trees to provide shade. There were more than enough places to sit. Because of Covid they had a system of ordering what you wanted for breakfast and this worked well. The breads were varied and fresh and the jams delicious. We ate twice in the restaurant for dinner. The food and wine were excellent. The set menu was good value. Our only disappointment was that the menu didn’t change, so we ate out for two evenings. All the staff were lovely.

I have lived in France for more than 30 years but this hotel is the best I have stayed at in this region of France. OK the decor and facilities of the rooms are not the most fantastic, but they are very value for money with everything one needs for a comfortable stay. I have stayed in this hotel 3 times but hope to return many more times.

I thought this hotel would be quirky and full of character and it was but......the reception staff were underwhelming and the pool was ice cold. I loved the buildings and the restaurant has Michelin stars but the service for dinner was abysmal. It was over an hour before our starters came, and getting the waitress's attention was almost impossible. We felt the local people whom she obviously knew were the priority. The food was nothing special and the menu was limited. The restaurant setting is lovely and such a pity that other aspects don't meet up. Breakfast was continental as I found the whole package to be over priced for what we had. We had a lovely view over the hills from our room although the down side was we were right above a walkway to the restaurant and reception. It was a challenge to find as well and could never have done it without the Sat. Nav. As mentioned in other reviews, there is no option for food throughout the day and no bar, and being so far from the town this can be a real downside.

Dear Sir, I was in the restaurant the very night of your “abysmal service”. From sitting down, ordering, having an appetizer and then a starter it takes a good 45-60 minutes in my restaurant. This is mostly governed by the kitchen and not the waitresses, as good food need proper preparation. The kitchen sets the rhythm and the waiters follow the flow so to speak. Contrary to your erroneous perception, your table was not “overlooked” in any way. We have repeatedly indicated in our review replies that we do not serve food during the day, and the full bar service on the pool terrace of the hotel starts at 17.30. During the day, all guest are welcomed to come to the reception to order drinks. The breakfast is indeed continental, but we try to put quality products into this service – at 14 euros I don’t feel our breakfast is overpriced in any way. The underwhelming reception staff were actually my wife and myself. Petter Tonjum, owner

The Auberge is a beautifully restored Catalan house set in pine woods. We stayed in a standard room which was large and had a huge bathroom. It was nicely furnished and the bed was very comfortable. There is a road not far away but we were not disturbed by any traffic noise and the air conditioning was effective. There is a pretty garden with a small pool and plenty of sun loungers. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and everything was replenished by pleasant efficient staff. It’s fair to say that the crowning glory of this hotel is the food which is exceptional. It is delicious, imaginative, and beautifully presented. The deserts are a work of art. It’s not cheap but you get what you pay for and the ingredients are of the highest quality and dining on the terrace in the evening is a charming experience. For us there were a few downsides. The hotel is a bit hard to find and the road is quite tricky ( glad of the sat nav) it’s also a bit far from town. You do need a car. There is no food to be had midday ( except Sunday) and that can be inconvenient as you have to drive into town to get something to eat. There is no bar as such but if you ask at reception they will get you a cold drink. Also no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. As this is a four star hotel I think that should be available. However overall we enjoyed our stay.

This small hotel looked promising on the internet but our stay there (3 nights) was nothing more than disappointing. The reception by the female-owner was reserved and cool. The room was tasteless and outdated, € 153 for B&B is far overrated (my wife called it ‘a cave room’). Facilities like deck-chair and swimming pool are mediocre. No service, no lunch nor snack at the pool. Moreover, there is constant traffic noise from the nearby four-way D914. This is not the place to be when visiting Argelès. We walked the promenade at seafront and regretted not to have booked the Grand Hotel Lido (“vue mer”!).

Dear Sir, yes, we do not serve lunch as we focus our efforts into providing a quality, full bar and dinner service in the evenings, for which I gather you never attended. Your views on the property’s interiors and exteriors are nonetheless abundantly subjective and in my perspective remarkably unreliable . Sincerely, Petter Tonjum

Navigating to the auberge the first time was a challenge for us but very worthwhile. And it was straightforward on subsequent occasions and showed us parts of Argeles that we had not seen before. The property is full of character and the setting delightful. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. We decided to eat at the auberge on our first night; it was busy but they managed to find us a table. The whole dining experience was exceptional - the setting beside the pool, seeing the moon over the mountains, the live music (appropriate and unobtrusive), the staff, the wines and the food - oh, the food! We dined again at the auberge... Breakfast was similarly pleasing. We thought we'd try it on our first morning and went on to take breakfast every day. Again, the setting and the range and quality of food exceeded our expectations. There were gluten-free options. Our room was characterful and spacious. The air conditioning and lighting were effective. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. Yes, we would have liked tea / coffee making facilities but it was clear when we booked that these were not provided. Our bathroom smelled somewhat damp / musty but not strongly and it was spacious and well-appointed. The gardens were pleasant and there were ample comfortable sun-loungers. The pool was attractive, fairly small but perfectly adequate. There is some traffic noise but we hardly noticed it. We enjoyed our time there. We are very pleased to have discovered the auberge and hope to return.

I don't usually write reviews, but thought it necessary for this particular hotel. I was really looking forward to staying here, as the pictures looked amazing and the reviews sounded promising. However, when seeing our room (standard double room) I was a bit disappointed (I've provided pictures to make my points clear): - although the rooms are described as 'contemporary', the one we had was fairly old-fashioned; but that's really just a matter of taste (remember I'm talking about the standard double room, the others might be more modern!) - but the whole bathroom (of which no picture is to be seen on booking.com nor the hotel's website) as well as some of the furniture in the room was outdated and not really of 'high-end' quality - as many other reviewers have observed, neither tea kettle nor coffee maker are provided, which should be standard in a 4-star hotel - there was mould on the shower wall and the shower head was not in a very good condition either, BUT the hotel owner was kind enough to replace it with a new one - the thing that bothered us most was the unpleasant, musty smell which we couldn't get rid of (turned out the source was the A/C, which didn't look very clean itself, so we let the window open day and night to make it bearable), and signs of room humidity were present on the walls as well Nevertheless, the property itself (garden and pool area) is beautiful and the hotel staff was friendly as well. Breakfast was OK but nothing exceptional. Depending on your standards and expectations, I'd thus recommend to book the category above the standard double room to avoid disappointment!

Dear client, it is always difficult to comment on reviews which refer to taste. You found your room old-fashioned, whereas I firmly believe your room is contemporary with bright colours, a stonewall on the left side, a very large and good quality bed, and some very high end bed lamps. The bathroom is very large and bright. The only feature that I think is missing is a large flat TV on the wall, which is being installed next winter. We do not provide coffee maker and tea kettle precisely to avoid repeating past mistakes with clients making unfortunate stains on our furniture and carpets. I did however advise you that I was not able to detect the so-called musty smell you refer to, and it certainly did not come from the radiator (which may from time to time dry up in the summer and provide a very dry metallic kind of smell, whereby we add water into the system to fix it). Regards, Petter Tonjum

I have just returned after 6 days at this lovely hotel. Great for couples. Its a very relaxing hotel. Great restaurant for evening meals. Just a couple of disappointments that would have made a difference to us. If you want to stay by the pool and relax for the day there is no food available. So you have to get up and drive into town for some lunch. This is disappointing for a hotel however, you can go to reception and order a cold drink. The air conditioning in the junior suite was very noisy for sleeping. We had to wear ear plugs so it didn't disturb us but if you haven't got them it is loud. You can walk to town (about 15 mins) but it is on a dark lane if you return by walking at night. The beach is about 10 min drive. loads of places to park and a big long stretch of shingle beach to choose from. The pool area is nice with good standard furniture. You can get pool towels from reception which was brilliant. We would return.
