We Stayed at the Inn the long weekend of Sept 2021, the kitchen Staff, waiter (Scott) and John (the owner) were all great!! We very much enjoyed our stay! We booked a guide for Saturday to take us out and John did a fantastic tour, we very much enjoyed the sights! The Entertainment Saturday evening was great, the bar area was full with locals and we got to meet some great people! our only small complaint was the back stairs were very slippery and two of our group had fallen, it was raining quite hard and we did report it to John and he did say it would be fixed Complimentary Breakfast was delicious, this is an option that we were most impressed with as most other places we have stayed don't offer this!! Overall great weekend and we will be back for sure!! We had a super great time on the trails and can't wait til the next time!

PSA (this business won’t warn you so I will) : DO NOT BOOK ONLINE ON ANY SITE – CALL ONLY. This was supposed to be our first getaway in approximately 6 months, and one we had really been looking forward to. We booked 9 days ahead on Expedia to ensure we'd have a spot. We arranged for our dog to be cared for, planned our weekend and drove from Moncton expecting a bed. We arrived around 9pm and were told by a staff member they didn’t have a room for us. The owner (John) was celebrating St Patrick’s Day and came over to talk to us visibly annoyed. He defensively explained that he no longer takes Expedia bookings and we were the SECOND couple they turned around that night alone. His wife said that they stopped wanting to do business with Expedia since this summer (over 6 months) and have had a hard time getting a hold of anyone at Expedia to end their listing. We left and began searching for a place to stay. The nearest hotels are in Fredericton, about 30 minutes away. While looking for other hotels or Airbnbs, I was shocked to see that this hotel was still listed as available that night not just on one but MULTIPLE websites. From what I saw online, it became clear that this turn of events had more to do with poor online business management from the business owners’ side: - Airbnb showed them as available - Destinia showed them as available - Google showed them as available on multiple websites - Their own online booking option is problematic and makes you think they are available but then you realize the stays are sold as if they are items without any dates associated. So you’d be paying for rooms without reserving a date for it. All in all, John and his wife have had knowledge for possibly over 6 months that people have been booking online and not getting real reservations with them. They also don’t warn anyone on their website nor on their Facebook that they don’t honor Expedia bookings. In practice, this means people have had to drive a minimum of 1 hour EXTRA to get all the way out there to get turned around to go back to Fredericton to find another hotel – sometimes late at night like we had to do (we only got in another hotel at 10:45pm!). Meanwhile, they have not resolved their online presence issue and are watching this happen while hanging out at their bar and turning people away ; and ruining their planned getaway in the process.

We went with 8 family members for a winter and covid escape. This cozy inn offered everything we needed for some awesome family time. Some went skiing and others enjoyed the scenery up at Crabbe Mountain. Our son-in-law got a suite so we would have a place to gather for Happy Hour before dinner. The suite had 3 floors with a spiral staircase!! The rooms were small but clean and comfortable and we shared a bathroom. The meals were delicious and there were no complaints from our crowd!! The common area had a warm ski lodge feel with a wood stove and rugged wooden tables. Live local entertainment started after dinner and Nason had the place hopping for several hours. There was a complimentary breakfast in the morning of pancakes and sausages. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to do it again! Thanks to the staff for making our stay so enjoyable!!

Great host in a cozy Inn and thankful for the COVID precautions here. They are running a tight ship and making us safe while ensuing we have fun. So thankful we came. Highly recommended.

Have you ever taken out your wallet to pay for the 4 eggs you ordered and the person at the till says, “That comes to $28.50?” And then you manage to talk him down to $16 and feel relieved that at least you didn’t have to pay $28, but then... you realize that still ended up paying $16… for 4 eggs? That was how my day started last Saturday. But let’s back up a bit. I arrived at Crabbe Mountain Inn for a two-night stay with my wife and two kids (5 and 7) after a day of skiing. I had reservations as part of a group with two other families. Walking through the front door of the inn, I was immediately struck by how cozy the main room was. Woodstoves, polished wood tables and bars, couches - very inviting. I was so excited to be there and enjoy a wonderful and special weekend with my family. We check in, I pay our $322 for two nights, and we start settling into our very spartan room - just two bunk beds of rough 2x4s, bedding, and towels. No tables, chairs, or any other furniture in the room. Just enough space for us to drop our bags and walk to the bed. But that’s okay. It’s an inn. You’re expected to spend time in the cozy restaurant/common area and share your bathrooms down the hall with the other guests. It really had that nice “ski lodge” feel. My kids loved it already. And there was a hot tub for guests right outside our room. Bonus! My wife and I then go to the restaurant/common area and I join my friend who is already at the bar and had ordered a Big Axe on tap. As I walk up, John the innkeeper is setting my friend’s beer in front of him, and then my friend says, “Oh hey John - I noticed there were no towels in our room. My son just got into the shower… could we get some towels please?” John stands behind the bar, turns his head uncomfortably in the direction of the other 8-10 guests sitting in small clusters throughout the room and replies, “You want those, like, now?” My jaw hit the floor. My friends are staying in a larger room, paying $250 per night, and the owner of the place asks, “You want towels, like, now?” It was a sign of things to come. “Yes, please,” my friend says. He and I give each other a look. John says he’ll see what he can do. My wife then approaches John and asks if there is a way she can get a glass of water when she or the kids need it. Again, there are no glasses in the rooms, the only bathrooms are public and shared, and the only place to be in the inn is the common area if you’re not in bed. John looks at her and says, “Sure, you can use the water station area over here,” (it’s a small kitchen with glasses and a sink), “but you’ll have to settle up for your room first.” That’s when I cut in. “That’s my wife, and we already paid.” “Oh! Sorry!” He’s suddenly much warmer. Good thing we’d paid up, otherwise she might not have gotten… a glass of water. For the rest of the night we try to steer clear of John. We have a wonderful family time in the terrific hot tub, and then head to bed. We fall asleep (eventually) at midnight to the vibrating walls of hip hop music blaring in the room overhead. The next morning we wake up and head into the common area (where else?) for the complimentary breakfast. We serve ourselves some pretty great coffee from the self-serve carafe, and take our seats. A wonderfully friendly server comes along and tells us that the complimentary breakfast this morning is two pancakes and two sausages. Terrific! We ask if it’s possible to add eggs to the meal. “There are no substitutions,” she says. I ask her, “Okay no problem. Then can I order 1 two-egg breakfast (that includes hashbrowns and toast) for $7 off the menu here - in addition to our complimentary breakfast?” She says that’s fine. But then others in our group want eggs as well, and then we’re asking if the kitchen can just do up some eggs for us and we’ll be happy to pay for them. The server looks uneasy and says she’ll need to talk to John. But John isn’t in yet. So someone in the group just says, “We’re happy to pay 2 bucks an egg or whatever. Can we get maybe 2 eggs for each of the adults?” The server reluctantly complies but again stresses that John needs to be consulted. One of our group says playfully, “I’ll talk to John. We’re happy to pay extra for the eggs. The kids are good with the pancakes and sausages.” The food comes, it’s delicious, and the service is incredible. There are 2 or 3 other families with teenagers in the inn, maybe 25 guests in total throughout the 2-hour breakfast time. When we finish, I take out my wallet and approach the till where John has taken up his post. Breakfast was complimentary, but I say, “Good morning! We ordered 4 extra eggs for my wife and I. What do I owe ya?” He’s a bit icy. In the next second I find out why. He punches some numbers into the cash register, looks me dead in the eye and says, “That comes to $28.50.” No explanation. No apology. My first thought is, “What have I done to this man? Other than pay him $322 and stay at his inn? And have a wife who asked for water?” I meet his gaze. “$28.50. For 4 eggs.” “No sir. Not for 4 eggs. When you ordered eggs, you waived your complimentary breakfast. So that’s 4 breakfasts with eggs: $28.50.” I’m stunned. I actually feel dizzy. Is this what it feels like to get robbed in broad daylight? “But the actual amount of food we consumed is the same. We just ADDED eggs.” “There are no substitutions or changes. What if the restaurant was really busy today? It would overwhelm the chef. That’s why there are no changes to the complimentary breakfast.” "For the same amount of food...?" My voice trails off. I can hardly speak. He just stares at me. That’s all he does. My mind is racing. “Okay, how about I add 2 $7 two-egg breakfasts. I mean, we didn’t get the hashbrowns or toast that comes with it, but then at least I’m only paying $14 instead of $28.50?” “I can do that,” he says. He starts ringing it up. I’m standing there feeling sick and relieved all at the same time. He starts having trouble with his debit machine, and then I stand there and wait for him to fix it for about 3 or 4 minutes. But then it comes online and I pay my $14 plus tax. for 4 eggs. No mention of the hashbrowns and toast I didn't get. I walk away shaking, collect my family, and we get into the car and start driving to the mountain. In the car, I start telling my wife what happened. She is floored and horrified. My 7-year-old verges on crying at how upset we are and how this man took advantage of us like that. It takes me half the day to stop feeling violated. As I’m skiiing - just me and the hill - I’m going through all the stages: anger, disappointment, bargaining. Beating myself up for not refusing to pay. Congratulating myself for not making a scene - just taking it on the chin from someone so cheap and ungrateful for my business. We return for our second-night stay, try to keep clear of John, and when the kids fall asleep, we sit in the restaurant area. John is sitting with a table of about 8 women who are just in for drinks at the restaurant, and as the common room empties out and winds down, he starts talking to them about what it’s like to be an innkeeper. And then he starts talking to them about certain guests, for example, who want to add eggs to their free breakfast. Some guests are really difficult. It’s hard accommodating some of the difficult guests. Etcetera. I’m not sure if he sees us. We finish our drinks and head to bed feeling anonymously humiliated. Try to sleep. Hip hop music until 1 AM overhead. The next morning, the friendly staff inform us that the complimentary breakfast has changed: sausage, toast, and… two eggs. We eat, check out, and leave for the last time. I so badly wanted to love Crabbe Mountain Inn. It’s cozy, the staff and other guests we spoke to were friendly. Good coffee, delicious breakfast, glorious little hot tub. But ultimately, as a guest, one is at the mercy of the innkeeper. And you want an innkeeper who loves his guests and wants what’s best for them. What happens when you feel like you're an inconvenience and everything you do might result in an extra charge? I don’t know what’s going on for John right now. I try not to judge a person based on a thin slice of two days of their life. Is he on financial hard times? Health issues? Family trouble? I'm a business owner. I've been there. But what made John so bad at being a business owner to his paying customers this weekend? All I know is: we brought him $1000 of business over 2 nights and he made me and my family and my friends feel awful. No amount of coziness or friendly kitchen staff can make up for that. We will never return.
