Detailed Reviews
Wonderful place to visit and decompress for a night or two. Stayed here while visiting family in the environs outside of Bologna. It is a very, very low key place, but if you are looking for Italian countryside views from the hills, peace and quiet coupled with a very friendly staff, this a must see. The rooms are spartan, but comfortable and complete with all the necessary amenities. They serve a very filling breakfast in the morning with home cooked eggs and baked goods. There was no dinner service on the property, but they directed us to a nice little pizzeria in a hotel in the next town over and we had some excellent take out. Very, very good value bed and breakfast; priced right, clean, friendly, peaceful. Highly recommend.

We stayed at La Piana dei Castagni in October 2009. Such a beautiful place, especially in the autumn when the leaves were turning and the chestnuts ready for eating. We were met by chickens, and the sight of red geraniums spilling over the windowboxes on the old stone house. The view, both from the garden and from the window of our room, was amazing - woods, hills and valleys. Valeria was so hospitable and helpful, giving us many suggestions for local excursions, and telling us exactly where to park and what to see in nearby Bologna. And the food! Breakfasts had to be experienced to be believed - at least six types of cake and biscuit every morning, along with bread, cheese, ham and boiled eggs. Lunch was barely needed! On two nights of our three night stay we stayed in for Valeria's beautiful dinners - multi-course, with local ingredients, all delicious, and all cooked and served by Valeria and her son. On the other night Valeria recommended a local restaurant where we were received so kindly by all the family and ate more local specialities, staggering out after several courses of local foods, the family's own wine, and a panful of chestnuts roasted just for us.

We stayed with Valeria for a few nights as part of our Italian holiday this year. The place was wonderful -stunning setting and Valerias cooking is excellent. We felt very welcome and comfortable the whole time. The area is beautiful and I would recommend hiking in the nearby national park. Bring good shoes and prepare for a proper excursion though!

I honestly don.t think our review will give the credit due to Valeria and her family for what we were given during out stay
We have travelled well, and this is exceptional
On arrival we were welcomed warmly, and with the most magnificent Italian meal that has ever touched our lips [at such a nominal price]!
Then the room, which was spotless with lovely fluffy white towels and much much more.
The cuckoo bird lulled us to sleep, and we awakened to a view that will be kept precious in our memory always
Really this was a spoil for us and at such an extremely good price, not too be missed
We hope that it is not too long before we are in this haven once again .... we can not recommend La Piana dei Castagni highly enough.

Stayed two nights in May 2011. Very beautiful countryside location - fairly high up with fantastic views across green hills many miles into the distance. Beautiful farmhouse cottage, well heated cosy rooms. A very hospitable welcome from Valeria, who is extremely knowledgeable about the area, local food and products. We had a delicious breakfast including fantastic local products, including from Valeria's own chickens and cherry trees and an equally delicious evening meal. There are also very characterful, authentic places to eat nearby. Overall a really delightful place to stay, in particular if you want to be out of the bustle of Bologna but within striking distance of it (it's a 50 minute drive).

I can only echo the words of the previous reviewers. This is a tranquil, simple, and comfortable place; our fond memories of it will linger for many years. And the region - the Appennines Bolognese - is alluring in its beauty, and remarkable in its history. If you travel with a lot of gear, little imagination, and require all the trappings of luxury, then this may not suit your taste. But for more contemplative souls, it is ideal.

We spent two nights here in September 2010. The views of the countryside are breathtaking. Sunrise over the eastern hills and breaking into the valley must not be missed. Perfect for a retreat from the noise and mayhem of Italian city life. Hiking the local trails and roads and enjoying the scenery and fresh air was a treat. Valeria prepared a lovely dinner for us the first night featuring her local produce and and we dined beside a crackling fire, and sampled some of the excellent local wines. The rooms are charming and very clean. Nothing compares to the experience of breakfast featuring, amongst other things, fresh eggs, prepared as you like, and laid by a chicken you've met as you parked your car ! Others have commented about the local restaurant Valeria recommends for dinner so we won't add to those views, other than to say it was marvellous home cooking, rich with local products, and filled with family charm. While we spoke little Italian, it didn't matter as they took great care of us, serving up what felt like a wedding banquet of Antipasti's, a selection of pastas and local meat dishes, beautiful desserts and local wines, all for less than the price of a steak at many restaurants in North America. One tip I would provide, would be to use Valeria's instructions to locate her B&B rather than relying on a GPS alone. Our GARMIN had more than one nervous breakdown shouting IMPOSSIBLE - IMPOSSIBLE - - TURNAROUND while navigating through the Italian countryside both here and in Tuscany.

We stayed 2 nights at this lovely farmhouse, which was just perfect and tranquil for reading, relaxing and enjoying the beautiful countryside. One of the hi-lights of our stay was the first night, when Valeria cooked us a lovely 4 course meal, truly magnificent!! Everything we ate was either made by Valeria from her own farm (yum yum to the chestnut chocolate muffins for breakfast and cherry sauce) or locally produced (St Lucia yoghurt is a must try).
Two nights just wasn't enough, we will definitely love to return!

If you are ok with driving in Italy (that was a whole other experience for us Australians) then this is an amazing place to go to and I loved every moment. Valerie the host was very friendly and full of information abut local attractions. The local restaurant she recommended on our first night (and the meal she cooked for us the third night) were the best meals of our whole 7 week trip through Europe...amazing value for money. The breakfasts were also substantial and set you up for a day of site seeing throughout the region. The rooms were lovely, very clean and offered views over the nearby valleys. You don't need to go all the way to Tuscany from the villa as there are lots of lovely little towns to visit close by that seems to provide a more authentic experience then Florence did..the food was better and cheaper as well...if you would like a relaxing time with amazing food then this is a great place to stay. It was what I had dreamed Italy would be like and I'd love to go back and stay longer if I ever get the chance.

+1
La Piana dei Castagni was truly wondereful from the moment we drove up the long winding gravel drive. Room was lovely, large and perfectly clean. Valeria, the host, was completely welcoming and made us feel very at home. Her recommendation for dinner turned out ot be one of the most memorable evenings of our holiday. The views from the hotel over the valley are stunning and sitting in the garden enjoying it was fantastic!
Highly recommended!!

"There are three rooms (named after local fruits) in the main house and, apparently, one, that we didn't see, in another building. Two of the rooms in the main house are for couples and one for a family. We were given the family room despite being a couple and had ample space and a good bathroom. I think all rooms are equally quiet."Read full review
