Detailed Reviews
I stayed here for 2 nights to visit the Vieng Xay caves about 30km away. There's a bunch of guesthouse all clustered together beside the river and this one seemed as good as any of them. I got a double room for 70,000kip per night and the room was very clean, fresh linen smell and the bed had a proper duvet, A novelty in Lao. Super comfy too.
Wifi was pretty god with a router on every floor. Food options very close by. Would recommend this guesthouse if you're passing through.

Sam Naeu is a 'hole' . If you don't have to come here, don't. However, if you do, this place proved to be a good bargain option, cheaper than some of the neighbouring guest houses which were not great at all. 4stars for budget travellers and relative to the location.

Stayed here twice.second time optioned up to a triple room which was worth the additional 10000 kip. Cleaned daily with hot water for a decent shower with a small wait between users to reheat. Old mate next door arcs up the stereo at 0800 so you are treated to music from then.
No complaints at all. Good value for the walk in rate.

My stay was 9 usd per night by booking.com. The room has enough facility, good wifi, hot shower with amenities. They clean the room and change towels everyday when I’m out. Good terrace and coffees/tea. The host can’t speak much, but he tries to do by gestures. I had comfy 4 days in Sam Nuea!

We arrived at 11:00pm in Sam Neua. Unfortunately everywhere was either closed or full. We managed to get a room at Phootong Guesthouse at 80,000 kip. It was terrible - tiny, smelly, freezing cold, cockroaches and rubbish shower.
The next day we moved to here and it is so so so much nicer. The owner doesn’t speak a word of English, but still he was very friendly and helpful via sign language! The room is ideal for a night or two. Comfy and clean. 70,000 for a double room (somehow less than the night before?!). There’s also nice balconies on each floor.

This guesthouse is clean, water heater is hot (this is important when go in December or cold season). Although the owner can't speak English (his wife can speak little bit more), but with body language and few single words in English, they try their best to help us arrange taxi to Vieng Xai Cave and waterfall. Taxi fare is standard, Vieng Xai full day is 300,000Kip per taxi, according to the price list posted at bus station. It is worth to pay 70,000 Kip per room per night (for single bed room in Phasouk Guesthouse). We stay here for 2 nights.
