Hotelli Sodankylä is one of the few accommodation places in the small northern Finnish town Sodankylä which is famous for its annual international film festivals that are organized in mid-June. Hotel is pretty standard and in an acute need for updating. Rooms are of good size but material outdated. A major drawback during warm summer days is the lack of airconditioning. Therefore rooms may be pretty hot which is annoying. Staff in the hote is very friendly and the restaurant serves excellent food.

I arrived late without any booking. Lucky to get a room (many events in town). Staff was really helpful and polite. However the room was terrible, not going to comment the decor, obviously a Finnish country-hotel will not be as new or fancy as something in the capital, but the cleaners have had a very long holiday. Caution advised if travelling with children!

In the bar of the hotel you can taste meet of the deers and other local tasty things.
Many local musicians perform in the bar sometimes.
During the film festival (Midnight Sun Film Festival) the hotel is full.

The cleanliness leaves much to be desired. The decoration is out of a haunted house. I would love to have one of those special lights to examine the bed linen because I doubt it has been changed in thirty years. The food was the opposite of spectacular and after witnessing an argument between a waitress and the chef it is hardly surprising. Wish I could have understood what they were saying but it definitely wasn't good.

Sodankyla is a mining town, and often we are asked to stay there for work. If there is anyway to avoid it I would. Dirty, the staff barely speak English and are extremely unfriendly. Internet was non existent. There was a lingering smell, that just makes you uncomfortable.

I would recommend the camping ground before here. But if you have to stay for work, you have to- try buying groceries if you can get back from work in time.

Thank You for the feedback after all this time. We just wanted to answer all the feedback (even the old onew)received to let You know we have done development with our services and we will try to get things better all the time. It is not certainly the easiest way in Sodankylä and with almost 50 years old hotel, but we keep strong to believe it will be worth to do. We also started our Quality1000 controls to collect all the possible feedback to know what to do better. We hope to see You again some othe time and we wish You a Happy New Year.

Not the most elegant, and the rooms are basic and a little tired. But the breakfast has good variety. The highlight is the menu of the restaurant, lots of variety, and all good. The wine list is basic but enough verity for a few nights....

Actually the better of the two hotels in Sodankylä! It is far from good, in need of renovation and oudated decor. But rooms are of decent size and staff is friendly. Breakfast quite good. Don't expect five star-quality but don't shy away either!

Dear Dr .Booska Thank You for visiting us and giving us feedback. We are small and we are old BUT we will do our best to create more things to do, attractions to recommend for travellers, places to visit nearby and of course developing our services. At this moment most of the services in Sodankylä center are for independent travellers, enjoying the nature by hiking, skiing, watching northern lights, snowshoeing etc. Aurora House 10km is a great place to visit, Luosto offers lots of activities (38km) etc. We appreciate all Your comments and add these to our developing plans. We wish You a nice Year of 2017. Welcome to visit again, next year will be our 50th operating year. with best wishes, Raili

I arrived in Sodankyla in the pouring rain following a long day on the bike. I was warmly welcomed and luckily there was still a room available.
The room was simple, but provided everything I needed. Well heated and lots of space to spread out my wet riding gear. Everything was perfectly dry by the morning!

The bar/pub had a reasonable selection of meals to choose from. The staff was helpful and suggested a local beer and dish to try. After my meal the bar became livelier as the locals arrived for a pub quiz.

Breakfast in the morning was sufficient with a decent selection in the buffet.

Overall, the hotel and staff provided everything I required at the time.
