I had seen this restaurant on Rick Stein Bologna . Wanted to go for lunch . Our amazing hotel corona arranged a transfer with Enzio . It’s about 1 hour drive . Cost was 100euros return , plus 30 euros per hour waiting time . This was well worth it . Sat outside in the spring sunshine and had couple of beers . Lovely waitress, nothing rushed . I ordered steak in balsamic. Delicious. Husband had the special breed of pork . Raved about it . The setting is very special and difficult to discribe . Can’t remember staffs name but they were all amazing . Also the Parma ham to start was best we had in Bologna . Really nice to get out of city for a few hours and try this very unusual place in a great setting . Our excellent driver Enzio was waiting for us . A perfect day out .

My wife and I just returned from a three-week vacation in Northern Italy. We stayed at La Fenice for two nights, and found the experience to be one of the highlights of our travels.

Remo is the owner and operator of this wonderful ruin that has been restored for the convenience of today's travelers. It is located about 45 minutes from Bologna, high atop the hills surrounding the city. The drive to the top involves curving roads along a pastoral setting that delights the eyes and the senses.

Our accommodation was a newly constructed building not far from the ancient ruin that houses the restaurant and the reception area. We stayed in what can only be described as a two-story fortress with wooden floors and antique furnishings that permitted panoramic views of the entire area. The peace and quiet of the accommodationi afforded us an opportunity for two nights of restful and undisturbed sleep.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the ancient building that also serves as Remo's office. This building, with its adjoining banquet area, swimming pool and veranda, is the focal point for guests staying at the Agriturismo as well as for locals who wish to stop by for a meal or gathering.

The food is prepared by Remo's friends and employees who live on or near the property. There is a family quality about the entire dining experience that is undeniable and rewarding. The quality of the food and the unexpected elegance of the dining area compares to a four or five star restaurant. And to dine in a building whose basic structure dates back more than a thousand years is memorable and impressive enough for that reason alone.

It is Remo's hospitality and generosity that provides icing on the cake for any visitor or guest. As well, his daughter Carla is available to assist in the restaurant and at breakfast, and to otherwise help those like my wife and me who only speak English.

This is the perfect spot to relax and unwind away from the fast pace of places like Bologna and other nearby cities. At the same time, it is close enough to the Autobahn to provide easy access to the many other inviting locations a typical visitor would want to consider.

Congratulations to Remo for offering such a unique and unforgettable accommodation for travelers who wish to experience the real essence of mountain top living in such a beautiful area of Italy.

A charming property with masses of character in the most beautiful area. Our room was very spacious with plenty of storage space for our week stay. We stayed in a room on 2 levels with stairs that are challenging... just be careful. Everybody was extreemly helpful but you did have to ask for any info that you required rather than it being offered. That said it was the begining of the season and they were getting ready for the high season. This was our first visit to La Fenice though not the area, would we stay again; probably not but I would say it is worth a visit.

I agree... stay away...
it is very far from Bologna, to get there you have to drive for about 1 hour on a very bad road. the room was very small, the bathroom very small and really old and shabby. the sink is in the bedroom not in the bathroom!!! also, the road is very trafficked so very noisy and the house dog barks all day and night... we left after one day even if we have booked for two nights... and the manager insisted in being paid for two night...

This could have been a real gem of a place, tucked away in the beautiful hills south of Bologna...but sadly it is not! It was difficult to find as it is not signposted well at all, the pool area was nothing like the photographs on their website....the food was average and we found our rooms where 1km walk away from the main building........ The service was poor and there is absolutely nothing to do there..... So unless you are really looking to get away from it all since there is no telephone reception, no wifi, no tv, don't stay here!! The rooms were in an old renovated tower but the steps up where really dodgy & loose, the beds were tiny and very hard, the bathroom & shower were too small for an average size person and there were funny tea towels instead of proper towels..... Since there are no curtains and there is a cockerel living right under the window, don't expect to get any sleep past 4am in the morning.....

This place is a real gem. The agriturismo includes different properties scattered throughout the area. Each room is different and charming in its own way. We were given a room about a 2 minute drive away from the main property. It was absolutely incredible - called La Torre, because of its tower-like structure, it looks and feels like something straight out of a fairy tale. Look out of the windows and admire your kingdom, a landscape of rolling green hills and blue skies.

The agriturismo is run and managed expertly by a wonderful family - they have their own Michelin restaurant, serving superb meals with home grown produce. Management focuses on sustainability and efficiency, using biomass to produce energy to heat the estate. They also breed their own pigs (a considerable distance away from the residence and rooms, thankfully), a breed typical of Ravenna (la mora romagnola), which is slowly increasing in popularity thanks to their efforts.

A simple family run Bead and Breakfast with a Restaurant serving some of the best food I have ever had in Italy. Their speciality is Black Pig or Mora Romagnola. Home made Pasta and famous Tole potatoes all served with great Coli Bologna Wines. This is a "No Frills" place, clean accomodation, great food and a simple way of life high in the Appenines. It is as if time has sood still. In addition they have just opened a small cookrey school with emphasis on using all their local ingredients like Parmesan Cheese, Balsamic Vinegar and Black Pig. If like me you are interested in hill walking then this place is a great base to work from. You can walk in any direction from La Fenice, walking maps are provided and all the routes are clearly marked. If you walk to far and dont feel like walking back someone from the house will come and collect you. La Fenice is approx 35 km's from Bologna International Airport, Ryan Air and Aer Lingus fly directly from Dublin to Bologna. If you want to be left alone with no one to bother you then this is a place for you. Enjoy.

We have been to La Fenice several times now, and it feels almost like a second home. The atmosphere is familiar and friendly, the environment relaxing, the food... ah! To die for. Every evening you got a choice of typical dishes from the area, all seasonal and fresh prepared. To drink, local wine. Can you ask for more? And if you want a little walk, or make a tour, the owner can help you with the route.

Heeding prior tips, we booked a room in the Tower building, and it turned out to be a huge two-story suite. (the other room we were offered in the main house was similarly large) The Tower is a new-ish building crafted to look like an old castle but with modern plumbing, electricity, internet, etc. It feels authentic, including the stone walls, smallish windows, and many stairs. Note that the Tower is about 1 km drive (half that to walk) from the main house where breakfast is served.

The setting is the real draw here -- in the middle of rolling hills, some of it forested, some open farmland. Fresh, clean air, no city or traffic noises. The night sky is full of stars.

The restaurant was closed when we were there, but breakfast was excellent with many choices of cheese, meat, and pastry. Remo sent us one night to dinner in Tole at Albergo Stella, which served terrific regional food. Tole is the closest town, about 3 km away.

Would definitely stay here again.

You won't go far wrong with La Fenice. It's a beautiful old farm built to withstand earthquakes judging from the breadth of the stonework and the logs used in its construction over 5 centuries ago. You get a massive room and can have a superb dinner of really authentic and delicious local food at a very reasonable price. There seem to be lots of family members around who cook, serve meals etc but it is mainly two brothers, especially Remo, with whom one interracts as he speaks good English. We also met a lovely Irish lady called Ann who runs a cookery school at La Fenice during the shoulder season and has a house nearby. It has a big swimming pool and is fairly easy to find plus the altitude makes it relatively cool in summer and at night. As I write this I am thinking of the delicious food and wine and the gourmet meals we had at no real cost compared to some very disappointing restaurant experiences near to main tourist attractions in Italy. What a gem this place is. Go there.
