Our second stay at ML since the tsunami destroyed Kona Village. It has a lovely property with fish ponds and trails to walk and wander as well as just sitting on the beach and listening to the waves. Excellent service and good 2013 update with...More
We stayed here for ten days and absolutely loved it..from seeing whales breeching from our room to gazing at the stars at the observatory to snorkelling alongside turtles. The hotel was amazing with impeccable service...
We have previously stayed at the Fairmont Orchid and the Hilton Waikoloa, but we enjoyed Mauna Lani more. The property felt more compact and intimate with less of the sprawl of the larger resorts, yet the same features.
While the snorkel lagoon at the Hilton...More
Spent four days for a family wedding. Had to get over my initial shock at the bleak lava landscape getting to the resort but once there, it was a small piece of paradise. This part of the coast is isolated so if you love shopping...More
The Mauna Lani Bay was beautiful and had amazing beach access. The cabanas and snorkeling were perfect. The views were priceless, and the breakfast buffet was unparalleled.
Pros: beach access, pools, views, snorkeling
Cons: some parts of the hotel aren't aging well, the resort package...More

If you have a rent a car there many eating choices at the the King and Queens court about a 10 minute drive towards Kona. The Shops about a 10 minute walk or a short shuttle ride has several eateries and a small supermarket with a nice deli if you want takeout. There is also a poolside cafe with a limited menu and the top end Canoe House Restaurant. The hotel staff is great and can direct you to places that fit your family budget

The pools on property are great, and you have adjacent access to snorkeling, equipment provided in your resort fee , kayaks and paddle boards, provided for a fee. There are also excellent fitness facilities on property for the 16-year-old, and an amazing golf course if your family does that, and bikes for your family to use to ride all over the property. As with any hotel in Hawaii, you need to look at it as a base of operations and from there take a helicopter tour, go into town and explore, go zip lining, take a dolphin or snorkeling adventure for a day, tour the lava fields, and explore the island more broadly. The kids aren't going to be entertained at any Hawaiian Hotel unless you provide some additional programming. I highly recommend using the excellent concierge staff to help program your vacation.
