My first time at this resort, and my second time to Kona (in 2010 stayed at Hilton Grand Vacations Kings Land - which I don’t recommend because of crowded mega resort and long walks to amenities, swimming, and restaurants). Fairmont Orchid met our family needs: 4-5 stars, on-site beach with snorkeling, reliable weather, kid friendly, not crowded with lots of resort space. More Shopping and dining are within 10 minutes drive too. It’s an expensive resort, but They don’t nickel and dime your for everything which is appreciated- free self parking, free snorkel rentals, and younger kids eat free, for example. 2 complimentary metal water bottles. Renting a pool daybed with cooler and umbrella was only $62 for a weekday, 125 weekend. The food is hotel pricey but not much more than nearby restaurants. So I felt we got a lot of value for the hotel price, and no resort fee I think. The beach had some sharp volcanic pebbles and rocks, but overall comfortable. The little cove almost has no waves so it’s great for kids. Not much coral but a ton of fish and some sea turtles too - within 30 yards of the shore. The pool is big but I wish there were 2-feet wading areas for toddlers. It’s an older style pool so it’s mostly 3-5 feet deep. Plenty of available lounge chairs and attentive pool staff and food/drink service. The breakfast buffet was extensive and delicious. Lunch service was casual fare like sandwiches and tacos. Drinks were mixed well. We didn’t get to try Browns beach house dinner but the Japanese restaurant was good - but limited menu. We did the on-site luau on Saturday which was fun, and tasty food/drinks. It was pretty windy (15-20mph) two out of 6 days. Not sure if that is normal for the area and time of year, but they did need to close some stuff due to the wind, and the pool was less enjoyable. Other than that, weather was perfect (85 high 70 low 5mph breeze and no rain). Every staff member was friendly and competent. We felt like they cared about us (ohana warmth) and took pride in their jobs. As others have said, the low point is the dated rooms, but it wasn’t an issue for us. Yes the walls have some blemishes and the fixtures/door handles look old, but that was not a big part of our vacation. The tv remote didn’t work but we used wifi mostly (which was plenty fast). Nice balcony with views and AC was strong. The bed and sheets were wobbly and a bit noisy when you moved. Overall my family was very pleased and we would return! Thanks Orchid staff!

Happy Thanksgiving!! Mahalo for choosing our property for a wonderful holiday! I appreciate you giving us a good rating and for sharing your experience. It was great to see how much of the property you got to experience and was thrilled to see you would return! It was challenging with the wind. This isn't typical weather for us. Sharing your experience is an excellent way for others to know what an amazing experience they can have with us. Thank-you again for taking the time and I hope we can welcome you back one day very soon! With warm aloha, Barbie Nakamura Director of Quality

Hotel's Favourite
We booked 2 queen-queen rooms for 10 nights on a Garden View with Breakfast Buffet package. Without asking, the hotel upgraded our rooms ahead of arrival to a better category that overlooked the neighboring golf course. It also had a decent view of the ocean. The room location was very peaceful except for a limited amount of disruption due to 3 private evening events that were held on the lawn between the north building and the ocean. The events only lasted a few hours and ended before 10 PM. The rooms at this hotel do not have blackout drapes. They have sliding shutter doors and light definitely seeps through and around. In the summer, plan on waking up early every day unless you are not affected by light. Since our rooms faced the golf course, the light woke me up around 6 AM. But this was actually a good thing... I'll explain at the bottom of my review. Our rooms had standard furnishings: 2 queen beds, a nightstand with 2 electrical outlets and 2 USB charging ports, and a 3 drawer dresser combo unit (refrigerator and coffee compartments). The refrigerator didn't get very cold (it had electronic cooling instead of compressor w/ refrigerant) but I turned the cold to max and was able to cool my drinks to a reasonable temperature. The side of the dresser combo had HDMI ports but I noticed they hadn't been properly cabled to the TV. There's also a room safe in the closet. The bathrooms were pretty nice. They had marble tile floors, double sinks, a separate door for the toilet area, a bathtub, and a shower stall. There was also a nightlight in the bathroom which made it easy to find the way to the bathroom in the dark. The toiletries were plentiful and pretty good quality. The bath towels were big and absorbent and there were 2 robes hanging on the back of the main door to the bathroom. The Orchid Court breakfast buffet included in our packages was delicious. Plenty of fresh papaya, pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and watermelon. There was an omelet station. They always had self serve scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, and either pancakes or french toast. The french toast was outstanding! The bread/pastry/bagel section had a mix of items but my favorite item by far were the malasadas - super fresh square shape sugared donuts! The Brown Deli food was mostly really good. We enjoyed the turkey sandwich, ham sandwich, and chinese chicken salad which were pricey but tasted great. The four cheese pizza was horrible and a waste of money. The Brown's Beach House was very good but some menu items were overcooked. For example, I had five spice duck breast on two different nights and the first night it was super tender and had great mango flavor but the second night it was a little overcooked and lacked flavor. One of the special of the day fish entrees we ordered was a bit overcooked. However, the purple yam bread and honey butter is delicious! The ahi poke is delicious! The big island ka'u coffee venison was great! And one of the two duck entrees was delicious! The hotel has its own beach. It's a small protected cove with good sand. There are plenty of chairs on the beach. They have a hut at the beach to rent snorkeling equipment. Each person is entitled to one hour of rental free per day (I don't think Costco mentions this anywhere). You can also rent paddleboards but you aren't allowed to leave the cove so it's pretty lame. When you snorkel you will see many beautiful varieties of fish as well and you may even encounter some endangered turtles. They have a shower station to rinse off the sand but the one on the far side of the pool by the towel hut is much better. The pool is fine for swimming. I think it's around 4 feet deep everywhere. It's oddly shaped so you cannot do lap swimming if that's your thing. The pool also has a roped off section for adults. The jacuzzi was very hot. The bubbles are normally always on but they didn't work for the first 5 days. The temperature in the jacuzzi was supposedly 105 degrees. The staff at this hotel is absolutely amazing! The front desk staff, the managers and night managers, everyone working at the Orchid Court restaurant, and the extensive housekeeping crew... they really went out of their way with friendliness and excellent service that made our trip awesome. Now, the final comment I want to make is that there are some very interesting places off the property that you can explore on foot. If you wake up at 6 AM, I highly suggest that you follow the beach path south towards and past the Mauna Lani Auberge Hotel. On the walk towards the Auberge you will most likely see a one or two turtles that crawled up onto the sandy beach areas to sleep. Most will slip back into the ocean by 8 AM. Just past the Auberge, there is a narrow walkway between the ocean and a fish pond. From there you will see quite a few different types of fish including pufferfish. And if you keep on walking another couple tenths of a mile towards the dock where they launch scuba boats, you can see many more fun sea creatures like eels. The eels often hide under concrete ledges but stick their snouts out. Wander slowly around the fish ponds and you just might see fish that jump out of the water. Another interesting walk from the Fairmont Orchid is to see the petroglyphs. Walk north by the ocean along the edge of the golf course until you reach the neighboring park. In the parking lot area there is a short paved path that leads you to the petroglyph area. Use your imagination to guess what the carvings represent. There's not much else to do here so it'll be a quick visit. Hope you enjoy your stay at Fairmont Orchid. We loved ours!

Attentive staff, friendly service everywhere on property. Clean, older room with view of the golf course, rate offered through conference attending was consistent with older room.Views and grounds were spectacular. Pool was fantastic, secret hot tub in the foliage was fun. Fire rings in the evening on the grass were nice Enjoyed the trails along the water on each side of the property- perfect to explore and see turtles. We didn't eat on property so can't comment about restaurants.

We enjoyed several days at this fabulous resort, splurged for the upgrade to #fairmontgoldhawaii to enjoy the next level of luxury! Juliana and Sam took great care of us and the team in the lounge was awesome, food was delicious and plentiful and the views spectacular. Breakfast and sunset canapes on the balcony! It was our first trip to Hawaii and a very special time with awesome memories, including pool and beach time (snorkeling) and shave ice to refresh. Not sure when I'll get around to it, so shout also to @gypsyguides for the island tour!

We had a ground floor room in the older building, farthest from the beach. It was part of a package with a conference group, so price paid for room was reasonable. A.M. noise from golf course maintenance. No black-out curtains so if you need total darkness, bring an eye mask. General cleanliness seemed fine, until I dropped something under the bed and had to retrieve it. UGH! Filthy! Up around the head of the bed was just gross, as if it never gets vacuumed. Later noticed the carpet wasn't vacuumed after our 2nd service, and slats of bathroom door were very dusty. Beach area is small but with decent services and pretty good snorkeling especially if you swim out across the little bay. A manta ray seems to show up by the beach under a floodlight over the water every night! Lovely grounds. Our experience with the restaurants was disappointing and in one case, literally sickening. First night we ate at the bar of the beach restaurant- it was lackluster. Lobster fried rice was greasy, not seasoned and a travesty for 38.$ . Fish sandwich mediocre. Another night we had dinner at the beach restaurant...a caesar salad with "fresh catch" addition. Straight out of a plastic bag, dressing was terrible, fish a hockey puck. Mud pie thing had been thawed and re-frozen as evidenced by an abundance of ice crystals in the ice cream. I do not kid when I say I barely made it back to our room when my body completely divested itself of that dinner in a very unpleasant way. My partner did not have as violent a reaction, but did not feel well after, either. We ate at 3 other places on the island and there were absolutely no issues anywhere else. Was excited to try what was deemed as an elegant smaller hotel...would spring for the Mauna Kea next time- that place is over the top beautiful and the food was simply excellent. Fairmont, hope you can get it together to be the hotel you advertise yourself as.

Fire the manager. This complex is so huge. Like other guests I repeatedly got lost. I had an all day trip to Hilo. At 0715. After several clues, like flashing numbers, extra numbers, it was acutely obvious that my safe was broken. I called and said I am leaving immediately after breakfast and need someone NOW. It had all my cash and controlled substance medication in it. The guy came right away. He said it just needs to be reprogrammed. I said "not so fast, let me test it." It was broken like I had told him. I got everything out, put it in a hand carry, and left, saying fix it. Guess what. When I got back there was a brand new safe that worked properly. Your job is to make money, while pleasing guests. I go to concierge and but for my initiative would never have known about hotel sponsored "excursions" like the petroglyph tour, and the outrigger tour which Chelsea signed me up for. Former met at Beach Shack at 0800. Except I get there, and they had no record of it . Beyond that, dude, MARKET IT and you might sell it. Viator offered must-see night manta tour. Your concierge apparently didn't know about it, or anything else to entertain guests. You CANT BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE. my last night. I wanted to peacefully sit near the beach, on a chair, drinking your captive audience priced beer, but on lawn just past the gazebo, you had a loud DJ wedding for maybe 40 people, with loud music until 10P, spoling the ambience for me and the other guests. NO OUTDOOR NIGHT WEDDINGS WITH LOUD MUSIC. My room, billed as ocean view was a view of a golf course, with two large trees blocking any Oceanview. My shower--and I've read the other complaints about like pressure, had two temperatures scalding or cold. Breakfast buffet at Oceanview was a crapshoot. First day as a solo, you seatedme.behind a post. Some days offered orange juice, most not. One day offered an event sheet with NY Times headlines, other days not. This hotel is serious money, so do your homework as it is not the only hotel in Hawaii.

The only thing I did not like about this place is that in addition to the room prices (high $600's when I visited) you have to pay substantially more if you want/need shade. My husband and I both need shade for medical reasons. It was impossible to find here without paying an extra $125 to $400 per day for a half-shaded lounge chair to a large, shaded cabana, respectively. Seems very steep to protect yourself from skin cancer. It also creates an extra exclusive zone in an already exclusive resort, which is just distasteful. This is a bad trend I have found in the last two resorts I have stayed at. I hope it does not continue.

We had a wonderful overall stay at the Fairmont Orchid. The staff was wonderful, the grounds were beautiful and the area was perfect for what we were looking for. A great place to celebrate out anniversary. Our only complaint was our room. Althought the room was beautiful, we paid for an ocean view room, and were upgraded when we arrived to a suite with what was called an angled ocean view. We were very disappointed to have a room that look at a fire hydrant, portable bathrooms, and parking on the golf course for the parties. We could slightly see the ocean, but I was disappointed that in order to see it, we had to look at all that other stuff too. Don't get me wrong, the suite itself was lovely, but when we asked the front desk if it had a view of the ocean and told them that was more important to us, we were assured that this room would be great.

Our room was well kept and clean, employees were friendly, and the surroundings were beautiful. We found prices high ($30 for fish tacos and $25 for a glass of house chardonnay). The upsetting part was finding room charges on our bill that were not ours. It took several days of emails after our vacation to straighten this out. It was resolved, but there needs to be a better system of charges made to the room.
