We booked 2 queen-queen rooms for 10 nights on a Garden View with Breakfast Buffet package. Without asking, the hotel upgraded our rooms ahead of arrival to a better category that overlooked the neighboring golf course. It also had a decent view of the ocean.

The room location was very peaceful except for a limited amount of disruption due to 3 private evening events that were held on the lawn between the north building and the ocean. The events only lasted a few hours and ended before 10 PM.

The rooms at this hotel do not have blackout drapes. They have sliding shutter doors and light definitely seeps through and around. In the summer, plan on waking up early every day unless you are not affected by light. Since our rooms faced the golf course, the light woke me up around 6 AM. But this was actually a good thing... I'll explain at the bottom of my review.

Our rooms had standard furnishings: 2 queen beds, a nightstand with 2 electrical outlets and 2 USB charging ports, and a 3 drawer dresser combo unit (refrigerator and coffee compartments). The refrigerator didn't get very cold (it had electronic cooling instead of compressor w/ refrigerant) but I turned the cold to max and was able to cool my drinks to a reasonable temperature. The side of the dresser combo had HDMI ports but I noticed they hadn't been properly cabled to the TV. There's also a room safe in the closet.

The bathrooms were pretty nice. They had marble tile floors, double sinks, a separate door for the toilet area, a bathtub, and a shower stall. There was also a nightlight in the bathroom which made it easy to find the way to the bathroom in the dark. The toiletries were plentiful and pretty good quality. The bath towels were big and absorbent and there were 2 robes hanging on the back of the main door to the bathroom.

The Orchid Court breakfast buffet included in our packages was delicious. Plenty of fresh papaya, pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and watermelon. There was an omelet station. They always had self serve scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, and either pancakes or french toast. The french toast was outstanding! The bread/pastry/bagel section had a mix of items but my favorite item by far were the malasadas - super fresh square shape sugared donuts!

The Brown Deli food was mostly really good. We enjoyed the turkey sandwich, ham sandwich, and chinese chicken salad which were pricey but tasted great. The four cheese pizza was horrible and a waste of money.

The Brown's Beach House was very good but some menu items were overcooked. For example, I had five spice duck breast on two different nights and the first night it was super tender and had great mango flavor but the second night it was a little overcooked and lacked flavor. One of the special of the day fish entrees we ordered was a bit overcooked. However, the purple yam bread and honey butter is delicious! The ahi poke is delicious! The big island ka'u coffee venison was great! And one of the two duck entrees was delicious!

The hotel has its own beach. It's a small protected cove with good sand. There are plenty of chairs on the beach. They have a hut at the beach to rent snorkeling equipment. Each person is entitled to one hour of rental free per day (I don't think Costco mentions this anywhere). You can also rent paddleboards but you aren't allowed to leave the cove so it's pretty lame. When you snorkel you will see many beautiful varieties of fish as well and you may even encounter some endangered turtles. They have a shower station to rinse off the sand but the one on the far side of the pool by the towel hut is much better.

The pool is fine for swimming. I think it's around 4 feet deep everywhere. It's oddly shaped so you cannot do lap swimming if that's your thing. The pool also has a roped off section for adults. The jacuzzi was very hot. The bubbles are normally always on but they didn't work for the first 5 days. The temperature in the jacuzzi was supposedly 105 degrees.

The staff at this hotel is absolutely amazing! The front desk staff, the managers and night managers, everyone working at the Orchid Court restaurant, and the extensive housekeeping crew... they really went out of their way with friendliness and excellent service that made our trip awesome.

Now, the final comment I want to make is that there are some very interesting places off the property that you can explore on foot. If you wake up at 6 AM, I highly suggest that you follow the beach path south towards and past the Mauna Lani Auberge Hotel. On the walk towards the Auberge you will most likely see a one or two turtles that crawled up onto the sandy beach areas to sleep. Most will slip back into the ocean by 8 AM. Just past the Auberge, there is a narrow walkway between the ocean and a fish pond. From there you will see quite a few different types of fish including pufferfish. And if you keep on walking another couple tenths of a mile towards the dock where they launch scuba boats, you can see many more fun sea creatures like eels. The eels often hide under concrete ledges but stick their snouts out. Wander slowly around the fish ponds and you just might see fish that jump out of the water.

Another interesting walk from the Fairmont Orchid is to see the petroglyphs. Walk north by the ocean along the edge of the golf course until you reach the neighboring park. In the parking lot area there is a short paved path that leads you to the petroglyph area. Use your imagination to guess what the carvings represent. There's not much else to do here so it'll be a quick visit.

Hope you enjoy your stay at Fairmont Orchid. We loved ours!

Resort is awesome for kids and families. Love the dining deal where kids eat free for resort guests. Binchotan was our favorite restaurant as well as the kids! Beach is great as there are only small waves that make it into the cove. Make sure you get the watersports deal for unlimited rental for your whole stay. Pools are heated and warm, but there is no waterslide or kids pool or playground on the resort or nearby that we could find. Fairmont has upgraded their gyms with all new TechnoGym equipment - its awesome. Deli was a great option for coffee, snacks and lunch on the go at decent prices - We did a picnic almost everyday near one of the water fountain displays. Live music and happy hour at Luana is pretty good. Nice restaurant right at the beach, thought food was average, but views made it taste amazing! Cleaning staff was very good. Only 4/5 stars due to Accor. I really feel like the new loyalty program is holding the Fairmont service back from its exceptional self. Instead of dining upgrade certificates you now get limitless but very limited suite upgrades. We were staying under a conference so Accor would not let us use them. Accor must be the only brand that does not give platinum or gold members breakfast or even continental breakfast! We got two welcome drinks and no upgrade for a platinum and gold membership! Fairmont did later apologize with a bottle of wine. Welcome gift on arrival was some pieces of pineapple, I think it used to be a lot better! We will definitely come to big island again though. I just hope the Fairmont/Accor thing gets figured out.

The absolutely best place to stay on the Big Island!! (We have stayed elsewhere 5 years ago and have cruised the island several times) We had two comfortable ocean front rooms on 2. and 5. floor with an absolutely amazing view to the beach and ocean and the whales passing by. Our three teenagekids stayed on the 2. floor, but that was ok, since we easily could come down to them using the fire stairs right by our room on the 5. floor. Many people used these stairs to access the beach and pool, and the stairs could definitely use a make-over to look as beautiful as the rest of the hotel! This hotel is amazing, beautiful, friendly staff, amazing views, excellent food, tasteful interiors, great huge pool with plenty of available sunbeds, green grass for the kids to play on, good room service, delicious and huge breakfast buffet, good shops, free parking, free snorkel gear, several free guided mini tours on the grounds, lots of activities for the entire family, and a free shuttle to shops. We had a late flight out on the check-out day, so we stayed by the pool all day, and we booked a free room for bathing and changing clothes before we had to leave. Excellent service! I simply can’t praise the hotel enough! The beach is small, but this small bay is very kid friendly and full of fish, so it’s like swimming in an aquarium, and an excellent snorkling spot also for beginners! I went on the free guided snorkling tour just outside of the bay (we swam from the beach), and saw two turtles swimming with us and plenty of fish. It is also a great place for SUP and cayaking. Turtles come up daily on a part of the beach in front of the pool restaurant. I loved all the different orchids inside, but I would also love to see more flowers outside in the garden.

When I write “free” it’s actually included in the daily resortfee, so you do pay for it no matter if you use the offers or not). If you want softer sand, a bigger beach and fun waves just drive 10min to the nearby beach Hapuna beach, which is absolutely amazing; best beach on BI! We definitely will stay on Fairmont (Orchid) again! It is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in! The pics show the views from our two rooms. And the view from the lobby balcony towards the pool/ocean and the main house seen from the pool.

We are a family of 5 who stayed here 4 nights and had 2 rooms.

Rooms: spacious. Nice bathroom. Balcony is nice for drying clothes but balcony furniture is tired. USB charging ports next to the beds don’t work. They are overused and need to be replaced. The only outlets that still work in the rooms are the ones that power the lights, so we had to unplug the lights to charge our devices.

Housekeeping: very mediocre. They basically just make the beds and replace the towels. I had to leave notes to tell them to take out the garbage, clean up used coffee cups, and refill the shower supplies. They make zero effort to tidy the room.

Pool: very kid-friendly and warm! Get there early to reserve chairs. 2 pool attendants are very busy and cover a large area. They are doing the best they can and manage a smile at all times. They don’t do a great job of cleaning up the used/dirty cups and dishes. Pool service ends at 4-4:30p which seems early. Pool towels and sheets are old and could use a refresh.

Pool/beach bathrooms: desperately needs an upgrade and housekeeping!! The floor was always wet and sandy like at a state park. I never saw a housekeeper in there. It needs to be cleaned every hour with how few stalls there are versus how many people are using the facilities.

Beach: it’s set in a little bay which is nice for swimming. Snorkeling gear and SUP boards are available.

Binchotan: yummy food but HORRIBLE service. The GM needs to speak to this waitstaff. They are totally unknowledgeable about hospitality. This location also serves as the breakfast buffet which is excellent with lots of food options. I wrote a separate review about Binchotan because the service was so awful.

Browns: yummy food and good service.

Overall: this is a tired property that needs some upgrades (cosmetic and service) to make it a 5 star resort.

My first sign should have been when I had to call reservations 4 times to correct the room rate when I booked the rooms.... a considerable discrepancy. Upon check in to our 2 rooms, there was blood on the toilet seat in one of the rooms and the other reeked of mold but appeared to had recently been painted to try to mask the smell. After 3 nights in that room, spending $$ on diffusers and waking up every morning with a headache, we insisted they move us. We couldn't get a dinner reservation in any of the restaurants on the property, EVER, throughout our 10 night stay and the concierge wouldn't even call outside restaurants to help up make any...just handed us a list. Pool service was great for the most part with the exception of a few who tried to rip us off or refused to help us move some chairs. Keep in mind you need to set your alarm (on vacation) to get out there to secure a seat because they will all be gone by 8:00 am. I went to the spa for a bikini wax and there was dust everywhere.... I shutter to think the last time that room was cleaned. When I went to throw something away in the garbage under the sink, I was disgusted at the filth. For the money we paid, it was a MASSIVE disappointment. We have traveled the world and stayed in a variety of hotels and I have to say that this one is the worst. We are not hard to please. I have never posted a review but feel I just cannot let this one go.

The property has so much potential as it is in a great location and the grounds are beautiful. There are some amongst the staff who are worthy of 5 stars, but it's unfortunate that they just don't make up for everything else.

We have stayed at the Four Seasons previously and decided to give the Fairmont a try as we were travelling as a family on this occasion. The property is beautiful and expansive. The pool area is great for kids also. We took several walks along the oceanfront to neighbouring properties and decided that location and aesthetics wise, the Fairmont is the pick. The Mauna Lani looks great but you can tell it is an old hotel that has been "tarted up" so to speak. We took advantage of the free shuttle bus to visit the local shops and pick up some items at the supermarket ... a must when you have children who like to snack! This leads me to my next point. Unfortunately the food and beverage prices at this resort are very high. Be mindful of this as there are few offsite options close by. That aside, we are looking forward to returning in the future.

First time staying at a Fairmont property and it was wonderful! Celebrated our 35th anniversary and stayed 10 nights in an Oceanfront Suite. We originally booked an Oceanfront Room and we were upgraded to a suite! Every morning and every night we enjoyed the beautiful sunrise and sunset and listened to the soothing Hawaiian music from our balcony. The property and our suite was immaculate. I am pretty cautious in Covid-19 times and housekeeping was very understanding in cleaning our room in accordance to our needs. Enjoyed the complimentary canoe ride and botanical/bee tour. Staff is so friendly. We especially enjoyed our massages a few feet away from the soothing sound of the ocean. The Spa with No Walls was beautiful and very peaceful that we enjoyed prior to massage. We could have chosen a massage in these cute little elevated huts, but chose the ocean tent which was a better choice for us. They have personal chairs at the edge of the beach you can enjoy to just take in the beauty after your massage. The pool was nice, but with so many other activities, just enjoyed walking the beach path and found sea turtles and other areas more private. We have stayed at Mauna Kea Hotel and Hapuna in the past, and the Fairmont Orchid did not disappoint. Fairmont Orchid has a comfortable vibe that added to my wish for having a relaxing and peaceful vacation in these stressful times. I already can't wait to return to the Big Island, my happy place.

Fairmont Orchid was our favorite Hawaii resort for years. We expected things to be different this year, likes face masks in hallways, elevators, restaurants and no free snorkeling gear. But the reality was masks required everywhere on hotel grounds, inside and outside, even with no people around. Very limited room service (you have to ask if you want garbage taken out or towels changed more often than once in 3 days). Restaurants inside main building are closed (beachside ones are available). All shops are closed. Half of the hotel that is closer to the beach is closed. No morning yoga classes. No drinking water by the pool or by the beach unless you rent a sunbed for the whole day. And, by the way, upon arrival, your are greeted with yet another tedious covid test paperwork scan instead of lei. All that really takes away from the experience. If I knew all that, I would have rented an airbnb place instead. Hopefully service will get better soon.

Katie, Mahalo for your honest feedback. COVID has definitely been challenging without question. I am so sorry this added frustration for you. We are so excited to have guests return to the island and resort! I am happy to let you know we are starting to bring back some services that we were unable to do when we first reopened. The safety of our guests and staff has always been a priority and we recognize it is not always the easiest on everyone. We do take our guest reviews and feedback very seriously and I have shared your review with our team. We have already started to make some changes! I hope you do give us another opportunity in the future. Mahalo for the time you took to do a review I really appreciate it! With warm aloha, Barbie Nakamura Director of Quality

My family just completed an amazing week-long stay at this beautiful property. The rooms, the property, pool, lagoon and food were all fabulous, but the thing that stood out above all else was the service. From Maria at the front desk to the servers at Halekai, Orchid Court, Browns Deli, and especially the pools and lagoon, all were outstanding in both service and friendliness.

We had a Deluxe Ocean view room with 2 queens which had a spacious lanai and an unforgettable view of the ocean, Maui in the distance, as well as the pool. You could linger for hours on the lanai sipping morning coffee and taking in the view. The room was spacious, and clean and also very quiet, we never heard our neighbors the entire week. Also, the bathroom is oversized with separate shower, bathtub, and water closet.

We spent more time at the lagoon than the pool. As expected, there’s a rush in the morning to get the best spots, have never experience a property where that didn’t happen. Both the pool and lagoon seem to be less busy after about 1PM. The lagoon has plenty of space to spread out and the Coconut Grove area really makes you feel like you have a spot on the island of your own. We snorkeled, kayaked, and SUP-boarded during our stay and again experience friendly service from the equipment staff. Also, drinks were plentiful and tasty.

It’s a little tough to find dining around the Kailua-Kona right now, due to limited hours or long waits. We tried Lava Lava Beach Club down the road twice, and the wait both attempts exceeded their hours of operation. But casual dining on property at Halekai right on the beach with a Manta Ray circling in the bay out front made us realize we didn’t need to leave. Both the food, service and setting were spectacular. Also, sushi in the lobby with a drink or two in the evening was a good end to the day.

There’s nothing really to say that is negative, it’s a bit pricey but that’s Hawaii. Also, occasionally there were people at the lagoon that weren’t staying at the Fairmont, but as mentioned earlier there is plenty of room there.

All in all, it was a true 5 star experience and we hope to be back.

Our initial attempt to check-in failed due to a mix-up in our reservation. The gal at the front desk made an effort to accommodate but her offer was a room that was over $1,000 per night and recommended another property that was sold out. We quickly looked online and found a room for much less on a third party website. Though I understand she cannot see that availability, this was not offered as a suggestion. We arrived for a wedding on a holiday weekend and were left standing there with no options. Literally, we had to stand back in line for check in again taking another 30min.

Comparing it to a past stay at Grand Wailea, well, it didn't compare. In my opinion, check in at a luxury hotel should feel effortless, and if there is bottleneck like lack of check in stations, offer guests a bottle of water or small pastry, something to add value.
Luckily we travel often and figured it out ourselves... when you are spending a few thousand dollars for long weekend, you would expect a higher level of service looking for ways to WOW the guest.

We moved on, got to the room and again were let down. Ok the service is eh but now the room is eh. The room was just...very basic, I will leave it at that. We got ready and headed to eat. Again, I will just leave it at I recommend eating off property. It was expensive, service lacked, quality lacked.
On a higher note, we had turndown service come at 9:30pm, which seemed obviously late. We let the property know we had, had a bit of a few off experiences and they left a little package in our room. Thank you!
The wedding we were there to attend was pretty fabulous. The best part of the weekend for sure. Overall, for the cost of the hotel I felt there was no value. Service, Facilities, Pool, Beach, nothing really stood out as like wow ok this was worth it. Buyers remorse I supposed. Lots of great properties in this area, I would recommend checking one of those out before coming here.

I guess they don't provide umbrella but fronting the pool has a lot of shade but it gets crowded 12nn onwards but if your early you can get a sun chairs. Too hot though advise to please always put sunblock. Fronting the beach also has chairs but no shade though. There's a rental fee for sun chair with shade.

I can confirm the rooms have Nespresso coffee makers; we are big coffee drinkers and asked for extra pods which housekeeping delivered. I do not recall seeing a kettle; however the concierge may be able to provide one.

Don’t know if you can eat vegan. We only had the brunch breakfast at the resort. By the way, best place we have ever stayed. Superb facilities and service. No one else comes close in our experience. Caution, you will definitely need a car if you plan on going anywhere besides the resort.
