I think so many people with status use points/status at this hotel, but feel upgrades are a guarantee. We were upgraded to an ocean view room and are so grateful, are the new residences in front of the property? Yes. Does it block your view a bit? Yes. Can you still enjoy the phenomenal sunsets, sunlight, sound of the ocean and the breeze? YES! The free breakfast was amazing and honestly enough for breakfast and snack later in the day. We had a tray of baked goods, tray of fresh fruit, yogurt cups with fruit and granola, hard boiled eggs, coffee and fresh juice. The room was clean, comfortable and housekeeping did a wonderful job. The lounging sofa on the lanai was so cozy. The adult pool is hard to sit at as they don’t have many chairs with shade. Plenty of chairs at family pool with shade and on the beach. We got food from Naupaka and unfortunately it was not good. Ate the rest of our meals off site. Two favorites were Fish and the Hog in Waimea and Manta at Mauna Kea. I really believe the people who have earned status have become to expect the upgrades and really complain when they don’t get it, with so many people using their points at these resorts they don’t have enough rooms to upgrade all of us. I feel grateful that I could stay at this resort using points. This resort is beautiful. The food really needs improvement and many guests we talked with agreed, just not good. I hope to be able to return one day.

Hotel's Favourite
Aloha This was our 2nd time staying at this lovely property. This trip we valet the rent a car and only left the property for lunch. Let me start with the welcome email from Gena, She got us the room we wanted and didn't forget it was my birthday weekend. I travel a lot for work and this property by far is my favorite hotel hands down. Huge shout outs go to the staff at the Ikena Landing. They take the Elite status breakfast to the next level. Its like seeing family again. Love seeing Ginger and Bianca every morning these ladies are like family with us. Lunch time no need to leave the resort Naupaka is terrific you have to try the Lobster Roll with Wasabi Fries. For Dinner Meridia is out of this world. Please ask for Donna's station - if you look up the Aloha Spirt in the dictionary you will see her picture. Thank you Donna even with a windy night you where determined for me to blow out my birthday candle . My advice no need to leave to go next store to the Mauna Kea we went one night to the Hau Tree for dinner and our server didn't have the Aloha Spirt. But I do suggest taking a walk at night towards that hotel next door just to see all the stars in the sky. The beach boys work there tail off and always found and umbrellas with shade. Our house keeper took great care of us and when we did leave the resort for lunch the Valets where on game. If you want an authentic Hawaiian lunch you have to try the Hawaiian Style café. Cash only and just order one meal its enough for two people. After you have to go to Texas Drive in for a doughnut. One last stop Island Gourmet you will see anything and everything you need is at the Island gourmet. one last Mahalo Marguerite from the bottom of my heart thank you for making this Birthday a special one. We will be back to see our 2nd family next year if not sooner . Mahalo

Logan was so easy to work with! His friendly demeanor and professionalism put us at ease and feel natural posing for our photographs. We booked a sunset session at the last minute of our epic 7 day honeymoon at the Westin Hapuna beach resort. We loved our review session where we picked out our favorites.

Abbreviated version: upgrade denied, check-in experience terrible, rude staff, bad food, pushy time-share people, not 4-star service for such an absolutely beautiful property and beach. Read the other reviews by people with the exact same poor and terrible impressions. If you stay in your room and don’t ask the hotel for anything you will give this resort 5-stars. Ask for anything and you’ll be disappointed. My wife and I selected this resort with our 1-yr old daughter staying for the first time in Nov’22. The weather was beautiful and lobby view is absolutely breathtaking. We were ready to spend thousands of dollars since our honeymoon here got canceled last year - live it up! I had stayed at the Mauna Kea in 2017, upgraded to a corner suite and it was such an amazing experience I couldn’t wait to bring my now wife to see what all Kona has to offer. She’s not been to Hawaii and also never stayed at a luxury resort. We couldn’t wait! I’ve never been able to use my suite-nights now that Bonvoy rebranded it’s loyalty program. So, after staying loyal to Marriott and Westin for decades (we also have a Westin Heavenly bed at home because we stay at SPG brands frequently) and well over 1,100 nights in their portfolio we opted to book a premium ocean front room and hope they would bump us up to a suite as they were available when we booked. I called ahead to make sure the hotel had our request to have a separate space for our daughter to nap as she’s only 11 months old and doesn’t fall asleep great with mom and dad in the room just feet away from a crib. I also wanted to be sure we had a crib which they ensured us was no problem. We checked in around 8pm at night with a tired whiny baby to wait for our luggage and belongings to be brought to our standard king room with a view of the Marriott residences’ rooftop with security lighting all lit up at night and HVAC system totally blocking the beach. Yes, you could see the ocean and the sunset if you looked beyond this giant building in your way that they don’t divulge in the photos or tell you when you pay for a premium ocean-front view. (I’ll post a picture of what you get vs. Marriott’s stock image). There was no crib setup in our room despite my attempts to keep wife and baby happy and be a good husband who plans things (which all women expect but most men aren’t wired this way). Now, our daughter is screaming hysterically as we’ve waited over an our for the crib. A gentleman showed up at the door and shoved it inside and said “crib?” and walked away. A subtle “sorry for the wait” would have been nice. But whatever… They next day they brought us the mattress protector and blanket that was supposed to go with the crib. That would have been nice the first night. Thanks. The next day they also brought the ice we requested since there is no ice anywhere. I had to call again after waiting an hour for ice which they neglected because the shift changed and the workers just left and left the next guy deal with it. I’d say just walk to the bar if you want ice but some people are annoyed with that and only give you a cup or two. One girl also said she’d have to charge me for the cup so I just purchased a drink to go in the cup. Some people at the hotel were really nice and took pride in working in hospitality. Others were exactly as the other numerous reviews depict - rude, careless and outright disrespectful. The front desk employees were the worst. When I politely explained to one lady working in the morning at the front desk she burst out laughing in my face. I’ve never been treated with such disdain at any hotel in my life - let alone one this nice. I’ve been treated nicer in Lexington, KY at the Springhill Suites. Anytime we’d call to have the valet bring up our car the front desk and “Service Express” phone extensions never relayed the request for our car. So, we were late to dinner reservations, crying baby again who just wanted to go. I normally wouldn’t care as I’m a pretty patient person but with kids every minute matters. Paying for valet service each day that was poorly managed by the hotel was really annoying when we’d call ahead just to still have to wait. The valet workers, one woman in particular busted her butt running to get our car. We tipped the valet each day knowing it isn’t their fault. Hotel Mgmt., you aren’t doing their tip income any favors messing things up. Each day it just got worse and their were more annoying episodes dealing with people who seemed like they just couldn’t wait to go home. Clearly they are not inspired to work here. We ordered room service and it was terrible. Undercooked rubbery fries and an $18 hot dog. Our room service was $112 for one of the worst meals I’ve ever had at any hotel. The front desk staff said they’d have to “talk to accounting about it” then just looked at me like, okay you leave now. Then there’s the Marriott Vacation Club people. Called our room every single day trying to trick us to come down and get our restaurant and events discount card and free departure gift. We aren’t trying to get a free luau or $200 off our room so didn’t have any interest in attending a 90-min seminar about time shares that both husband and wife must attend (with a baby too??) and then there are all kinds of restrictions when and where you can get 15% off already over-priced food. Oh and the class is an hour away at the Marriott Beach Resort so have fun burning a whole day doing that. They just kept calling and calling ever after I politely stated there was no way we’d all be able to sit through that. Nor did we intend to buy into a time-share with a 1-year old. Since the hotel Mgmt did not seem to care about making anything right, I reached out to Marriott Bonvoy on Twitter and they gave me the obligatory auto-reply of “what can we do” and then never heard from them again. If you want spend a lot of money and have a nice experience and memories with your loved one or family - go to the Mauna Lani Auberge Resorts collection south of here. It’s absolutely amazing and the people take pride in working in hospitality. The restaurants are a lot nicer and this was the only place we could get in for a reservation the entire trip.

The Westin never disappoints. The Hapuna resort was love at first sight. My wife and I stayed here for our baby moon in October 2022. After being greeted by the very helpful valet and bell people, you are welcomed by the spectacular view of the ocean from the lobby. It is magnificent. The service from the front desk was fine, received with a welcome drink, and lei. The rooms are very spacious and very comfortable with good details. One drawback is that there's no blackout curtains. Not an issue at night since there's almost no artificial lights coming into the room, but if you need darkness during the day, you'd be out of luck. Didn't bother us but something to keep in mind. The beach is one of the best on the island so we didn't really feel the need to leave the resort to other beaches all that much. The sunsets are worth writing about as well. Incredible. Other great experience worth calling out was our photography session with Blinnk. Our photographer was fantastic - took some great shots, and you could tell he felt inspired and was really into it. The negative: -the food was just okay, great pizza in the Lobby bar for a late night dinner, but Meridia and the pool restaurant were fine. Not bad by any means but nothing special, and definitely pricey. -be mindful of where your activities are. if you're be spending most of your time in or around Kona, the drive can get long. It is much further north in the resort area.

The rooms were gorgeous, and the resort itself was fine, but the room service food was absolutely terrible. The room service in particular was perhaps the worst room service I’ve ever encountered at a hotel, minus perhaps one of those free breakfast hotels. The fish sandwich I got was laughable, and the salad and cookie must’ve been left out for hours before serving to me. When asked for a refund, they agreed but never gave me the refund. I went to the front desk, and they only agreed to refund me the fish sandwich, even though the entire meal was terrible. I think that’s telling on how they operate the resort though!

My ocean view room was spacious and the staff were friendly and helpful. For me, the $45 (plus tax & tip) breakfast buffet is way overpriced. I chose the ready-made items at the Piko Coffee+Bar. I was there to attend a conference and did not have time to eat at their upscale restaurant this time. But dinners at the Naupaka Grill were delicious and came with beautiful sunset views and live music. But the star attraction is that GORGEOUS beach. It was perfect. I also got some beautiful views hiking the trail between the hotel and the Mauna Loa. I have no complaints whatsoever.

In my humble and personal opinion staying at this fabulous resort for well over 10 days, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the resort and its outstanding staff. a. We loved our room and the cleaning crew beyond words. b. We absolutely and positively loved the Breakfast buffet and the restaurant staff serving us, the crew's service is wonderful, thoughtful and quick to give you whatever you need. We are not nor want to be the ambassador or platinum whatever and so we do not care about getting lots of food and without wanting to pay for it. c. The Resort is superb, gorgeous and well laid out for its guests, in terms of comfort, relaxation and just sitting somewhere in privacy and enjoying the blue water view, without having to worry about free continental breakfast, and giving the hard working superb staff a hard time. d. The Beach is spectacular beyond words.

I completely agree with the previous reviewer - who is am ambassador. No wonder we were treated like trash at times as a lowly platinum. The hotel itself is amazing. beautiful views, pools, the beach. I think Hapuna beach is probably my favorite out of all of the Hawaiian beaches. However, there are some encounters with the staff that soured my family's time at this property. We had an extremely uncomfortable experience getting platinum breakfast at the restaurant. Two of the four of us typically do not eat breakfast due to health conditions, but went along just to keep family company and to take pictures and drink some juice. When ordering, we were rudely told that our family of four cannot share the two continental breakfast included with our stay (we were not asking for more amount of food than what is typically provided for two continental breakfasts) I had to ask several times to clarify because I thought I had surely heard her wrong. The waitress clarified that we can share the fruit plate and the bread, but cannot share other food that comes with the meal. what..? we weren't planning on it, but what?? I had read on other reviews and from a friend that you can ask them for more fruits if you want, and they are very generous. Since the waitress was giving me all kinds of vibes, I decided to ask for more fruits just to see what she will say. Of course, flatly and rudely denied and treated like we were the homeless begging for food. I almost couldn't believe the difference in how we were treated vs what's been told to me before - perhaps don't be a minority when staying here? =P In any case. Other than that, we had encountered one other employee who probably shouldn't be working in customer service at a 5 star property. Some other reviewers mention crazy guests screaming at staff - before my stay, I thought it must be the guests. After staying here, I'm thinking, perhaps there is a reason why there are so many frustrated guests at this hotel.

Positive - amazing beach, sunsets and property is lovely. That’s where it ends. For what they are charging, you wouldn’t be blamed to expect a 5 star experience. You will however, be extremely disappointed. I’m an ambassador elite and I am still in shock with the horrible experience at the Westin Hapuna - and it seems I’m not the only one - which makes me think about the truth of these 5 star reviews. Breakfast is a rip off - and for elite members they offer you yogurt and pastries as your “free breakfast”. It’s almost insulting. And the food you do pay for is really overpriced and underwhelming, and pre-made (seriously you can’t steam my broccoli instead of grilling it with oil???). I could even get over all of this but the service here was ridiculously bad. They tried to overcharge me by $200 per night (check your bill!), when I arrived check-in was ridiculous and I wasn’t welcomed as a guest, the people that are working there clearly don’t want to be there and getting a smile or a welcoming hello is next to impossible. No help with bags and no explanation of any benefits as an elite member (even the restaurant didn’t have me on their list!). These little things are what adds up and makes for a 5 star experience that we are paying for - unfortunately you won’t get it here. It’s criminal what they are charging, for what you get. I tried to give feedback as an ambassador and was given no solutions or attempts to make things better. Just “I’m sorry.” The day before I left they called me to give me my welcome gift - after being there for three days! And as I was about to leave they asked me to stop by for my departure gift. Why these things aren’t set up at check-in is beyond me. Unfortunately the only departure gift I wanted was to actually leave this hotel. Don’t waste your money or vacation on this property. And Westin - before you reply with the generic response, I truly hope you take this feedback to heart and become again what you once were. Unfortunately for me - I will never come back.
