Our family has been coming back to Mauna Kea for years, alternating between the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and a villa through Mauna Kea Residences. This year for Spring Break, our my wife and I brought our 4 teenage daughters back to celebrate our wedding anniversary (we honeymooned at the hotel 21 years ago). We stayed in two adjoining beachfront wing rooms and loved the ability to walk right out our room to the ocean and pristine beach of Kauna'oa Bay. Our stay was nothing short of spectacular. The hotel remains a Hawaiian classic and the staff goes out of their way to spread aloha. This year, the attentiveness of the Beach Club staff was stepped up a notch from previous years, with complimentary SUPs, boogie boards, and kayaks that was new this year and very much appreciated. The one thing we noticed were a few newer musicians in Copper Bar in the evenings that weren't up to the quality of acts that usually play there (Brandon Nakano and Pomai Brown are always outstanding). Jazz at Manta and dinner were outstanding (new dinner menu). Overall, ours was an exceptional stay and we can't wait to return next year.…
Stayed here for a week in mid/late February. We arrived just after a really bad Kona low left, and everything was wonderful. The staff is very friendly and professional, our room (an oceanfront deluxe on the 8th floor of the main tower) was perfect, and the hotel's variety of activities made each day a new adventure. The beach, of course, was fabulous, as were the views from both of our balconies. I was a little skeptical of the orange-and-white color scheme at first, but by the sixth day, I thought it was fabulous. The artwork scattered throughout the hotel is also impressive and fascinating. The little touches (complimentary water flasks instead of water bottles, POG juice at checkin, banana bread upon arrival) are wonderful. The aloha spirit of everyone we encountered proved that it's not just a marketing myth. Overall, every need was met effortlessly, and the entire stay was full of happiness and warmth. This is genuinely the best hotel on the Big Island.…
My wife and I stayed here three nights for part of our honeymoon. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone searching for a more upscale experience. What really set this place apart was the excellent staff and amazing room with a private balcony overlooking the ocean. Everything was comfortable and clean and quiet. We had no problem getting last-minute dinner reservations and the snorkeling we did off the beach here was some of the best (there's a great reef here a little way out). Pacific Dream Photography was able to accommodate our schedule for a "trash the dress" wedding photography session as well, which was an absolute blast. Cynthia is an amazing photographer, very professional, and got some really great shots of us in and out of the water. We highly recommend them if you have a chance to drop by. …
The Mauna Kea is one of my favorite hotels. I love the authentic, mid century modern design of the building and room decor. The beach feels as though it is completely private to the resort, even though it is a public beach. The resort provides beach chairs, towels on the beach. Also there are boogie and surf boards, snorkel sets provided free of rental fees. The grounds and vistas are breathtaking. Our Pacific Dreams photographer, Cynthia, was professional, had a great eye, and captured beautiful memories of a special event during our stay. There were countless locations on the property for amazing photo opportunities. It is truly a unique resort. In summer, manta rays come right up to the cliffsides to be viewed in the evening. An unusually bad winter storm made the water too murky to see this visit. However, that was no fault of the resort. However, one thing that could use improving is the cost to stay at this resort, which has skyrocketed over the years. The cost to stay a week has gone from a luxurious splurge to a prohibitive amount that only multimillionaires can comfortably afford.…
This was one of the best stays I've had at any hotel. The service was outstanding and I was literally in paradise. My room overlooked the ocean and private beach. We went hiking, snorkeling, and canoeing.
The setting is lovely. But the rooms are dated. We booked a top floor ocean front room. Not sure when this was last remodeled, but room felt like a hospital - white tile , cheap furniture. At $1500/night our expectations were higher. Left early after one night. Kama'aina rates are about 25% of rate for non-locals. Would consider this a deal at $299, but not $1500
The hotel is a rather compound located next to a beautiful, white, sandy beach. I read that it was originally built by Rockefeller as the best hotel on the island in the 70s. It has a large number of art work from his collection on display throughout the hotel, which adds to its charm. Overall I quite liked the hotel, the views from the lobby and breakfast area never gets old. The location is quite isolated though, other than another hotel I didn’t see anything in the immediate surrounding, just volcanic rocks. The 3 restaurants on site offered enough variety for a 3-4 night stay but longer than that I think the options would get a little stale. Although we never tried, there is a shuttle that can take guests to the adjacent sister hotel for additional dining options. The hotel was built on the 70s and it looked every bit as such. I think the restaurants have been remodeled but the rooms and halls certainly show their age and feel less luxurious than other hotels at this price range. It reminded me of a college dorm except the rooms were larger and had more amenities. The beach in front of the hotel was not great for snorkeling, I didn’t see anything in the water but surfing and boogey boarding appeared to be an option at the right time of the day. The service was not as good as, say, a Four Seasons hotel but the staff was friendly. Overall I found the hotel charming and had a lot of personality but has not kept up with time.…
This is a top-notch beautiful hotel located on one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. If you love a beach vacation, chances are you will never want to leave the hotel grounds. The beach is stunning and even has a coral reef for some fantastic snorkeling. The hotel does not nickel and dime you. There are no resort fees, they won’t charge you to use their snorkeling equipment and you can have housekeeping everyday. As a lifetime titanium Bonvoy member I was treated very well. I received a room upgrade and was given a credit towards a bounty full full breakfast buffet. There are many activities to choose from, or if you want you can just find many secluded places to just sit, relax, swim, or just sit in the sun and read a book. There are three main restaurants to choose from so if you’re looking for variety you can have it. You can also check out the restaurants at their sister Westin hotel property next-door. There is a shuttle that goes back-and-forth during the evenings. I just checked out of room 406 yesterday, and I am very sad to go. This hotel is not inexpensive, but if you are looking for a one of a kind beach vacation on one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Hawaii, this is the place to go.…
Beautiful resort on a peaceful beach with plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas. Resort is a little out of the way from other amenities, however everything you need can be found onsite. Our Tower room was clean and the bed comfortable. Bathroom is a little dated and on the smaller side. Marriott platinum breakfast was plentiful and the option to pay up for the full buffet was reasonable. We enjoyed the resort so much we added on an extra day and the hotel manager was able to accommodate us.
We have stayed at the Mauna Kea multiple times over the past 20+ years. Stayed again in October 2022. What’s great: One of the world’s great sandy and relatively calm beaches. Ability to use (lots of) Marriott Bonvoy points if you book ahead. Friendly and competent staff - particularly waiters, front desk, bell desk, and housekeeping. Breakfast buffet and restaurant setting overlooking beach. What’s not: Old rooms need major rehab. Restaurant food for dinner and lunch is not worth it - uninspired - needs a major rework. Pool is small for the resort size.
