We had several emails before arrival saying that they may not be operating to normal standards but we didn't expect this. Other than saying 'name please' the lady on reception said nothing else to us. The room was clean but although the tea tray had been cleared it had not been refreshed. A very grumpy staff member in reception told me to 'wait there' and then took fifteen minutes to reappear. The restaurant was appalling. It wasn't busy when we arrived (just sixteen people) but we had to wait ten minutes to be seated. There were only two types of white wine available!, we ordered one only to be told it was sold out. My wife ordered salmon and I had a pie. You could bounce a knife off the salmon it was so overcooked and the boiled potatoes were virtually raw. My pie was nothing special but the veg was overcooked and tasteless. We sent my wife's meal back. Fifteen minutes passed before the waiter reappeared to ask if she wanted a replacement meal. She asked for a pizza instead thinking it would be quick, it wasn't. When it did arrive it was supermarket economy range standard and so overcooked it snapped like a crispbread. We gave up at this point and after some discussion it was agreed we would just pay for the pie. Breakfast the following day was chaotic. Again we arrived early and went for the continental option. Bread, juices and fruit were already running or had run out. They only had two domestic size toasters so there were long queues. There were also long queues for coffee. Thankfully we were only staying one night. The hotel was obviously short of staff but this is still no way to treat guests and they weren't helping themselves, why didn't they offer more restricted menu that they could cope with, why were they putting out single jugs of fruit juice and so on. We won't be going back.

We (husband, toddler and myself) stayed for one night to catch a ferry from Harwich the next morning. Firstly, the lady at the check in counter was absolutely lovely. Check in was quick and easy. The room itself is ok. It's basic and the beds weren't super comfortable but it's fine for one night. However, it wasn't very clean and that bothered me. The bathroom was a bit dated, fine, but it was also grubby with lots of hairs on the floor, around the toilet and the (open) shower drain. I would not have taken a shower there. Breakfast was OK. The bacon was nice, but even though we has breakfast at 6.45am (q5 minutes after they opened) it seemed really empty. They had run out of pastry struff, for example? I don't think I would stay at the Holiday Inn in Colchester again. It wasn't horrible bur it wasn't great either.

We arrived on my Partner's birthday. Lisa on reception was so sweet she organised a slice of cake, a balloon and a drink to wish him a happy birthday. We were very touched by this gesture. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good with the usual choices of cereal, toast and pastries plus a variety of cooked items. We took advantage of the gym and swimming pool. All in all a good stopover on our way home. Thank you Holiday Inn

We spent 4 days in this hotel as a base to travel around the area, which was a good choice for just that. The receptionists were very helpful when needed and checking in was fine. The rooms we had were perfectly acceptable, but the lack of a fridge or safe was a bit annoying. We had our window open and yes you could hear the trains passing but they didn’t keep us awake at night. Our son’s room was across the corridor and he was kept awake most of the night by constant talking coming from the next room .After a couple of days ,I enquired if the occupants had left only to be told it was an extremely ill old lady who was staying there with carers who changed shifts in the night,so ear plugs were brought into play. As I have two replacement knees I found the height of the bath a little daunting and would have preferred a walk in shower, but I managed.The1st night we ate in the restaurant, ordering from a interactive menu, after half an hour the drinks hadn’t arrived and after calling over a member of staff was informed the order hadn’t,gone through. However we weren’t charged and I’m glad as my meal wasn’t very nice. The breakfast was very good and they served possibly the nicest sausages i’ve tasted in a long time. We dined out at night for the rest of the stay.

It’s a real shame, and I’m not sure how much of it is down to Covid, from checking in to checking out the whole experience was not good. I have stayed here several times over the past few years and always found it to be a very pleasant stay, good food and service. This time there was a very limited menu, the service was very slow and the food was mediocre at best. My room card didn’t work several times so had to come back down to reception. Each time I came down there was a queue so I had to wait . When I did check out they had added items to my bill which I hadn’t had. I’m going to be looking for another venue when I next visit Colchester Colchester
