I booked 2 junior suites one with a swim out. The swim out room was ok but the 2nd supposed to be luxury junior suite was facing the woods. The view was horrible it was actually scary. When I checked in the front desk was a male and he was very rude. Our flights were delayed so I asked for late check out for one of the rooms. They told me $20 extra an hour which was fine but later said they couldn't do it and just hung up. The website photos of the resort is not the same as the resort is not as updated. The lines are always long for the front desk and guest services. When you have to book your transfer to the airport you have to constantly go to the office to track them down. Will not recommend. Don't expect anything spectacular for your birthday request just this sign on the door.

Orlando Aguayo was our butler and was very helpful in making our week stay awesome. He was friendly and helpful with organizing our dinner and spa reservations as well as our visits to the ruins, zip line, atv and horse back riding. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here at the resort. I highly recommend the dorado restaurant. The food and drinks were so good.

We visited from end of May through the first week of June. The resort is very nice and very well maintained. There were 5 of us and all were able to fit in one room which had plenty of space. Nice big comfortable beds but the sofa bed was a little rough. The shower is for two people and it's very spacious. All the restaurants that we could go into were open. We did not pay for the Diamond upgrade so we just stuck with the base pakage however we were able to enjoy the resort well. The buffet had a large selection of meals for everyone and food was good. The a la cart restaurants were beautiful but for most the food was not that great. We ate at the Italian, Japanese and the Steak house. For the Italian we all ordered something different and the food was just...ok. Nothing surprising. At the Japanese restaurant the food was very bland and flavorless.. the only thing that saved that place was the sushi and the rolls..those were excellent. Our favorite was the steak house. Food was delicious there and even their house wine was pretty good! The room service food was good but limited options; they usually took 40-45 minutes to deliver. In all of the restaurants and bars the waiters, waitresses, and bar tenders were amazing to include house keeping! Can't stress it enough..very very nice folks. All were always there if you needed them and very serviceable. Excellent service. The beach was a place to relax and hear the ocean..but NOT to get in. It wss extremely dirty due to the sea weed. I would see that in other areas of cancun the hotels will pay to get the beach cleaned of this but not here.. it was very dirty. So if you are a person or a family that likes to get into the ocean waters this is NOT the place for you. If you want to go to town taxi service can be pricie. For the 5 of us to go into Cancun's "La Isla" or their shopping center or to the Mercado 28 we paid $80 USD..yes! $80!!. Luckily we found a taxi on the way back who only chaged is $50USD. IF you want to leave the resort and onto the road to get a shuttle, the taxi chages $10 USD. The actual resort is about a mile or 2 inwards and you cannot walk it as there are alligators around that area. All in all, the facility and the services were great, no complaints there. My only real concern is the food that it wasn't like other resorts that I have stayed at in Cancun. It's flavorless or just bland. Room service was good. All the staff is amazing and always there to help. Check-in and Check-out was very easy to do. They do chage a $200 USD deposit for your stay which will be refunded when you check out..this is one thing Expedia, Orbitz or other sites don't really mention. Also there is a tax that you pay at checkout that was not included with what I originally paid for.. for our stay we paid $10 USD.

Royalton Riviera Cancun is what you make of it in many respects. Look only for the positive and you will find it. Look for the negative and you will find many examples where the facilities do not match the price point. Positives: 1. the staff is eager to please, says hello to you as you pass, and are easily recognizable by their uniforms. One of the young men in the buffet made sure to make it a memorable experience for our two little ones, and told us all about studying sports science at the University of Cancun. He was absolutely great, and most staff was as nice as he. 2. the buffet is second to none. There are many, many options to choose from and include both American and Latin American favorites. As one fellow guest said to me, "you can eat there for a week and never have the same thing twice." That's probably an underestimate - you could eat there for a month before having to duplicate. The sushi was excellent, the omelets made before your eyes were delicious, and the kids' options were definitely a welcome surprise to parents of small children. 3. the number of pools is amazing and are near all rooms. There are tons of clean towels nearby, plenty of adult and kid options, and so many pools that none ever seemed crowded. 4. the availability of excursions offered through an on-site vendor was very nice and the staff there is unbelievable. They were very willing to change our excursion choices when our first choices were a little too demanding for small kids. 5. the views are stunning. 6. the facility is secluded and secure - you don't have anyone on the property who isn't staying at the hotel. Negatives 1. those who say the property is in decline are telling the truth. There was a lot of visible mold throughout the property (but it was actively being addressed - the mold just seemed to have the upper hand). Many elevators look like they are ten years past the last time they were nice. Our jacuzzi leaked - right over the top of the electrical outlet underneath it. The faucets are all backward - hot but marked cold, and vice versa. The furnishings and decorations in the room were chipped, scratched, or outright broken. The kids splash pool had fun things for the kids to enjoy, but many had no water running through them. That meant, for instance, a slide in a really cool dragon's mouth - but with the water not working to make the slide a slide. It was truly a shame because you can see the past splendor of the place. Sadly it has reached a point of disrepair where it is highly unlikely it will ever be able to come back without a MAJOR overhaul. 2. the beach is not usable. The sea grass has overwhelmed it and you can't wade through a little bit of it to enjoy the ocean, or go to one part of the beach to avoid it. It's everywhere. Even if the sea grass is brought under control the beach is behind a reef. There simply are no waves to enjoy. Imagine the waves from a large lake and you've got the idea. If you want a true beach resort, well, you're on a beach. But you aren't going in the water, and neither is anyone else. The beach is easily the least populated part of the resort. 3. outside of the buffet the food is subpar at best, and the best foods at the restaurants were available at the buffet. As an example, the same sushi at the hibachi restaurant was available at the buffet. The rest of the food there was just bad. The beef was of terrible quality and poorly prepared. The salt that should have been used to prepare the beef was instead used in the chicken teriyaki, and with great alacrity. The pad thai was so bad the wife wouldn't eat it, and the salmon was so bad my daughter didn't want it and neither did I. 4. the restaurants seem to be severely understaffed. Fully expect 15 minutes to pass before your drinks even arrive. The food at the hibachi restaurant - 1 hour, 10 minutes from order to table. Need a refilled drink - maybe you'll get it, maybe you won't. (This was NOT the fault of those who were on staff. They were doing their best. But they were overwhelmed because there just wasn't enough staff.) 5. the ability to obtain dinner reservations before 8 or 9 pm was next to impossible. The first day nothing was available because we waited until 11am to attempt to book. The next day we attempted to make reservations through the concierge at 7:05am, just 5 minutes after reservations opened. Nothing was available before 8pm. The day after that we were able to get reservations for dinner at 7 with the help of the concierge. Or so we thought. The restaurant did not have our reservation so we went to the buffet again. We finally did get a reservation at 6pm, but the hibachi restaurant meal was so bad (see above) that I wished we had just gone to the buffet for yet another night. In summary, save your money or go elsewhere. The facility doesn't match the price point, is in disrepair, is poorly staffed, and the food (outside of the buffet) is worse than your local greasy spoon.

Furthermore, we thank you for bringing to our attention the mishaps you encountered, and I assure you that I will share your observations with my team for a proper follow-up. However, I would like to point out that the seaweed is affecting all the Caribbean, but every morning 20 workers are in charge of cleaning our beaches, unfortunately, there is no human possibility of completely removing the sargassum. Regarding your comment on dinner reservations, I would like to clarify that all our guests can make their dinner reservations through a QR code that is displayed on the television in their suite. We offer you a sincere apology for any inconvenience that you experienced and we truly hope that you can grant us a new opportunity to host you in the future. Sincerely, Alfonso Lopez General Manager

We visited in May for my husbands 50th B-day for 10 days! We had a luxury ocean front room with rooftop jacuzzi. Room was fantastic until the second last night when some rude guests arrived in the room next to us at 12:30 in the morning and were partying all night. Security never answered phone. Diamond club staff the next day made up for it. We had to move rooms for just one night but for the inconvenience the butler went above to make the last night special. Now on to the fantastic staff. We spent almost all our time at the diamond club pool and the staff was amazing. Mauricio and Francisco the pool butler made us feel like royalty. Our chairs at the pool were set up for us everyday before we arrived. They hustled around the pool to lay out towels for all the guest. Such a nice service. They also brought around snacks and drinks through the day. As well as an ice cream cart. Yummy! Damaris the server at the pool is fantastic. We were never without a drink or food! She works so hard and always has a smile on her face and sweet personality! She is the best and miss seeing her everyday! She would always greet us by our names as we did hers. She is literally the best. Ramero another server at the pool would bring me french fries from the Armadillo diamond club restaurant! He went above and beyond! He even brought us buckets with bottled water in it. Have to stay hydrated. Jacinto the bartender at the diamond club beach bar made the best Paloma’s! Damaris and Jacinto were a great team! Arturo the bartender at the diamond club pool swim up bar also made a fabulous Paloma and had many ideas for different shots. Marianna the activities director was so fun and motivating. The coin diving game was hilarious! Robert the private Butler we had the last day was so nice and went above and beyond to make a not so great situation better and did not let our fantastic vacation end on a bad note. We had virtual butlers the whole time and they were great with making all our reservations on a daily bases, bringing us extra waters, beers, hangers, decorating the room for my husbands birthday. It was all great! Staff in the diamond club lounge were great and the snacks delicious. The food at the resort overall was great. We tried all the ala cart restaurants and the buffet had a separate area for diamond club guests to sit with very attentive wait staff. Liquor selection was great with so many top shelf options. My favorite was Don Julio Reposado in my Paloma! Overall we had a fantastic time and meet and made so many new friends, staff and other guests! Can’t wait to go back! Tell all the diamond club pool staff Rick and Rebecca say hi!
