The place is charming and the location is unique.
We liked it immediately, upon first glance.
However, there were some aspects, inside and outside the hotel, that left something to be desired.
In general, without going into minute details, the structure and furniture were a bit tired and worn and the staff rather clumsy.
All in all, it appears obsolete or outdated.
On the other hand, the view was breathtaking.
Maybe it would be worthwhile to have some maintenance and improvement works done and make it more comfortable.
Mixed feelings.

This hotel was a distaster. I think it has not been renovated since it was opened - I had ants and mould on the walls in my room! Furniture were old and stinking, so I was keeping all my clothes in my luggage. Staff was rude, lazy and they did not speak english. Cleaning service was poor - they did not clean well and when I came, I discovered that one of the shower gel bottles contained water - so actually it could contain everything even something harmful and cleaning staff should have checked if the bottel was opened or not. I was there for a business trip, so we were 60 people only and busy for most of the day, but I cannot imagine hotel full of families with children as there is only small outdoor swimming pool and small, not nice beach. They do not have a luggage service, and there is no lift, so I had to carry my luggage alone in this "luxurious" hotel. Also restaurant is very poor, food looks cheap and is not tasty - again, service is horrible.
About their buiseness/conference facilities: air conditioning in conference room is so loud that it is hard to hear the speaker, and usually when the air-condidioning was working, the microfon did not (sometimes also all electronic devices, so we had to sit in hot room, to continue...)

Stayed for 5 nights for a family wedding in August. The hotel is set in a beautiful location...cliffside, overlooking its own small bay....tremendous views!! On arrival, found parking a little difficult as there was another wedding taking place...very busy! After checking in (staff ok....), found our room, which wasn't too spacious, but it had its own small balcony with breathtaking views!! Bathroom was small and dated....very small shower cubicle with a shower curtain that insisted on having a fight, each time you took a shower!! Good air con system, although a little noisy, essential as the weather was very hot!!
Communal areas were very well presented inside the hotel. The outdoor pool was super, with plenty of free sun loungers...had to pay on the beach for them! Downside tho'...if there was a wedding taking place, the pool was closed to non wedding guests....bit of a trek to the beach!!
Breakfast was good, with plenty of choice. Staff were ok, but not particularly friendly.
The wedding day itself was out of this world....the whole day with the help of Lucia, the wedding planner, went like a dream....good food and plentiful! Lots of happy guests!!!
Super location for a wedding!!
NOTE...a car is essential...cliff-side roads with very steep drops!!
biting insects...we all suffered..some quite badly!
expensive bar with differing prices depending on staff (pint of lager 5 euros...next round 6
euros?!)

First of all, this is my first review for tripadvisor. I feel the need to write so I can save someone else the trouble I went through here. I was here for a business trip together with 70 other colleagues for an international meeting. The rooms have not been renovated for decades, there are ants and mosquitoes everywhere, the breakfast buffet is the poorest I have seen in years of travelling and this hotel is definitely NOT a 4-star - you are told to carry your own luggage to your bedroom!
But the worse came when my wallet was stolen from my bedroom (which I duly locked every single time, even when I was inside). The lack of cooperation from the manager included trying to cover up the incident (completely insensitive to the fact that I was left with no money, no credit/debit cards, lost my ID and driver's license, all this only 2 days before having to return home), initially refusing to send a staff member with me to the local police so I could report the missing documents and in the end charging me the taxi that took me there (which I had to ask a colleague to pay for me)!! And I thought I was being considerate when reporting it as "missing" rather than as "theft" to the police... one of the lousiest pieces of hotel management you'll ever see.
I am SURE that you can find a better place to stay than this. Save yourself the trouble - the only good things here are a hotel that has an access to the beach and a swimming pool (a single one, mind you) plus three or four friendly staff members, and that's most certainly not worth what I have described above. 4 stars??? You must be out of your mind.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights during the course of an Italian road trip. On arrival, we were impressed. Set back into the cliffs with dramatic views, we were hoping for good things.
The car park is a little tricky to access but I'm sure if you're driven this far in Italy you'll manage it!
We headed to reception to check in. My Italian is pretty poor so, like everywhere else we'd stayed, I was patient and offered to use translating apps to make communication easier. However I found the staff here to be particularly rude and surly. Not something I'd mind normally, but they then started to tell us that the terms of the booking were incorrect. We'd booked through booking.com, like we had for every other hotel along our trip. It clearly stated that breakfast was included but they insisted that this was not the case. €20 a day. In 1000 miles of travelling around Italy, this one the only instance that the terms of the booking were questioned.
Moving on. The room was clean and pleasant, with a lovely view over the bay. Cleaning staff were thorough and punctual. Breakfast consisted of a cake buffet, coffee, some cold meats, hot dogs, scrambled eggs and fresh orange juice. Nothing special but not bad. Having been told we were paying for this on top of our booking, we filled our boots! Views with breakfast were stunning. We sat outside when the wind allowed and it was gorgeous in the sun with the views.
We headed out into the local area for exploration for a few hours here and there but the majority of the time we stayed on the private beach. The water is beautiful and with the beach being set back into a bay there is next to no wind. The beach is very convenient to access, with a lift directly down just behind the bar and then a short walk down to the seaside.
However, what we weren't told was that access to the beach is NOT included in the room rate. I was rather horrified to discover that access to the beach was charged at €18 a day. No mention of this was made anywhere on the terms of our booking, at check in, at the point of entry to our beach. The beach attendant asked us if we were staying at the hotel when we arrived, he took our name and room number and showed us to a beach bed. As you can access the beach as a non-hotel guest, people who weren't staying were paying for the access.
In summary, the Hotel Spa Villa del Mare could be a fantastic place to stay. It has decent facilities, wonderful views and provides a blissful setting for relaxation. However, the bitter taste left with the extra, unexplained at point of sale charges has made it difficult to reflect on our stay with much a a sense of satisfaction. We were quoted €297 for 3 nights stay and ended up being charged €425 (which includes 2 rounds of drinks at the bar).
The curtness of the reception staff did not make us feel welcome and will leave a lasting impression of the place.

All your paying for is the view, but the view is not worth the value. No one speaks english or Spanish, service was horrible. Your free breakfast is hard bread, cold eggs and pastry. The free wifi is free to them not the guest. 4 days without a signal that works. Their excuse was it's down in the area which is a lie being a last minute traveler booked acrossed the street and had perfect wifi. My room is horrible and I requested to change and they did but later decided to charge me 250 euros at check out. If you there for an event good luck. They have a midnight curfew. They lock all the exterior doors and you have no way of getting in or out. The area is isolated nothing in site. You been warned.

If you want to pay 120 euro for a good view (with a very loud train passing every 20 minutes included), go ahead. This is hotel that should be closed right away. Auwful rooms, everything looks old, outdates, from past times. The breakfast is zero! They should be ashamed to serve this to people and claim they are a four star hotel. You have to schlep your own luggage down and up many stairs...The isolation is terribe so you can hear everything what is happening next door or below or on top of you. Try to find another hotel in Maratea or even better a small B&B with good service and fresh and new interior and motivation! This hotel just wants to cash in without doing any necessary investment. Lost glory!

The 1st time gave me a single room. that normally it would be a wharehouse and not a room. Room dim 3,5 x 2 ...aprox. TOO SMALL.
After asking to change it with difficulty, they gave me a normal room. No TV, no pressure in the water, the cistern in the toilet didn't work. I opened the shower and for a couple of min the water was yellow like rust, and finally the room was not clean !
We went on Saturday night at the Port to eat. The traffic was tremendous and the road was blocked. Also the parking was full.We decided like many others that it could be better to parking in the main road like many many other cars. Same thing in many turistic places in the world. We walked by foot and eat ar 1999 restaurant. The only good thing. We walked again all the uphill and we saw to all cars including ours the ticket emitted at 23:37 p.m. they are amazing !!! Where was the Municipal Police o avoid the traffic jam ? Which genius send them at midnight? They only expel tourism.
So , for sure I do not recommend the place.

What a find (not by us, but our production company).

Built into the living rock, this hotel is built on a number of different levels it gives an old world charm to the place.

The staff go out of their way to make you welcome. Not sure if it’s family run but has that feel about it.

The restaurant menu changes each day and is different lunch time to dinner time.

The hotel has its own private beach which is accessed via a lift ( there are still a large number of steps down to the beach).

There is a pool below the restaurant on the same level as the hotel.

If you have a mobility issue this is not the place for you.

Si accede alla spiaggia tramite un ascensore e poi ci sono un bel po' di scale da percorrere... Però per quanto mi riguarda è stato un buon compromesso per non imbattermi in spiagge sovraffollate e non dovermi spostare con l'auto per il mare
