El Conquistador resort is perched on a cliffside in Fajardo, PR, overlooking the ocean. The views from almost anywhere in the hotel are unparalleled and its the resort's top selling point. The resort has two main sections:

1) At the top of the cliff you'll find three pools, the lobby, three restaurants and the best views of the hotel (some of the rooms in this section, the ones with the best views, are still closed due to hurricane damage, which is still quite visible).

At sea level, you'll find a water park (which for now is included in your stay, but it'll change), a marina, another restaurant, and more rooms, most of which are now open and which have been recently built or refurbished, so they feel very new and nice.

Both sections are connected by a funicular with spectacular views.

The hotel doesn't have a beach onsite, you need to take a boat to Palomino Island where they do have a private beach. The boat itself is free but you do need to reserve it ahead of time. The boat runs every hour from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (and the boat back runs every 30 mins until 5 pm). We found that if you want to be on one of the first boats of the day, you need to reserve at least the day before. If you reserve in the morning, usually they won't have anything available before noon. That said, the boats that run in the afternoon tend to be less crowded, and the beach itself is also less crowded.

As for the Palomino beach, its beautiful, a true piece of Caribbean paradise. The island is part of the Reserva Natural Arrecifes de la Cordillera (Icacos is also part of this natural reserve), which is a protected area. The water is transparent, the sand is white, its postcard perfect. You can buy food and drinks there. The inconvenience of having to take a boat is more than made up by the feeling of being in a tropical island paradise, honestly, its worth it.

The resort can be expensive, accommodation, food and drinks, and that is the only knock on it. A pina colada, for example, is $11.00. You can easily walk to town though, the neighborhood of Las Croabas is just a short walk from the marina. You'll find several restaurants there that offer cheaper and better local fare. The kayak tours to Laguna Grande also leave from this part of town, so no need to take a cab, you can easily walk there.

Overall, I think el Conquistador is a great place to stay. It's location is great for exploring eastern Puerto Rico (Culebra, el Yunque, Arrecifes de la Cordillera, etc). But if you want to explore San Juan, better stay a few nights there, because el Conquistador is quite far away - about 50 minutes - and transportation to San Juan is expensive (a one-way Uber will cost north of $150.00). If you want to visit both San Juan and eastern Puerto Rico, I'd split my stay in two, because this resort is not a good base for visiting San Juan.

overall our experience was amazing, whatever parts of the hotel that is functional now during renovations was perfect! and the staff all went out of their way with exemplary service. grounds and rooms are pretty clean although the hallways and rooms did have a bit of an interesting smell. pools were gorgeous, not all of them were the cleanest but the main pool was always spotless... we did have issues with the fire alarm, it kept going off and once even went off at 3 am

My good friend and I went for a girls' trip and had a wonderful stay. We stayed for 4 nights. We arrived on Saturday 3/19/22 and left Wednesday 3/23/22 and we are suffering post trip depression back home in the cold, and miss the gorgeous views, friendly staff, and ferry to the beautiful beach. We stayed in an ocean view room, which was very nice, clean, great size bathroom with an amazing view of the ocean and cliffside. Small balcony with 2 chairs where we sat and took in the view each day. We were in room 3226. Honestly no complaints about the room, the bed was comfortable and we slept well. The first day we hung out at the main pool and had pina coladas from the pool bar. Like a dream. The next day we went down the funicular (say that 10x fast, it's fun) to the marina area and took the 10 minute ferry to Palamino Island. The boat ride was great. Plenty of chairs on the beach, umbrellas, and trees on one side for shade. We enjoyed watching the pelicans dive bombing the fish on the quiet side with the trees further away from where the ferry drops you off. The water was pretty calm. Some seaweed, but not a ton. Gorgeous aqua blue water with pretty mountain view. There was a bar and grill and wait service. Fantastic service. I did walk up to the grill on our 2nd day at the beach to ask about ordering food because no one had come to our chair in a bit. The waiter was awesome and took the time to find our waiter and give him our order, which was brought to us in a timely manner. Every staff member we encountered at the resort was friendly and helpful. We did rent a car and drove the hour and 20 min to San Juan to do a day trip there, which was great. Driving was fairly easy. We did the kayak tour in Fajardo which was only a 5 min drive from the resort. The resort was operating at maybe 50% capacity, which I liked bc it was pretty chill and didn't have a crowded feeling at all. The only negative was that the seafood restaurant was a bit limited in seafood, but we understand that things are like that in these covid times and prices all around are higher than the norm. We felt that for what we received at El Conquistador it was a good value overall. The food was good, and we appreciate food. Our breakfast at Las Brisas was especially delicious, awesome french toast. Good coffee at El Cafecito. We are pretty easy going, and I don't really know how people can complain. It's a beautiful island with beautiful people, and I hope that I am blessed to return someday! Thanks for an amazing relaxing time away from reality with one of my dearest friends!

My husband had been to this resort 17 years ago. He was looking forward to taking our family. It was not until 3 days before we arrived that we learned it was no longer owned by the Waldorf. I contacted the hotel and they shared it was a “soft opening” after the hurricane had destroyed the island two years ago. Upon arriving, there was an angry couple at the front desk cancelling their reservation. That was our first red flag. We entered what was basically a ghost town. We saw no one as we walked through the hotel. Once in our room, we were greeted with a musty odor. The finishes in the room were sloppy, torn rugs, new paint jobs with paint specks all over the furniture. We soon found out that breakfast was available for $19 per person till 10a but that there would be no lunch service until 3pm. Then that same outdoor bar would be the only food for dinner as well. There would be only two entrees offered for “lunch” and dinner. A limited menu doesn’t even begin to describe the 8 things on the menu. During our 6 days there, we only saw the pool cleaned once. It was full of bugs. There were no clean towels pool side. Every window we saw had black mold and leaked. There was water pouring into areas of the hotel from leaky rooftops. On New Years Eve, the reservations quadrupled but the staff did not, leaving us waiting for drinks upwards of thirty minutes. We missed lunch that day, not enough servers. Only 20% of the rooms are inhabitable. The rest remain in disrepair. I don’t see how this hotel can ever recover and thrive like it was once did. If it wasn’t for the staff who clearly care about the facility and want it to succeed, this would have been a total wash. We were charged for Waldorf quality and got hourly motel product. It’s a shame, I can’t see us ever returning.

We came back to El Conquistador 7 years after our original stay, to celebrate our wedding anniversary with our two toddlers. When we arrived, we noticed the front entrance was completely under construction. There is a tent set up next to the self parking to check your temperature and sometimes there are golf carts available to drive you to the front desk. If no carts are available, you have about a 10 minute walk through the convention center to arrive at the main hotel. Upon check-in there were two staff members working and one person in front of us waiting to check in. It took a total of 45 minutes to get to the desk to check in. This includes the time it took for someone 3 persons behind us to slip the manager her credit card and check in before we were called. I am assuming she was a “friend” and received the luxury of skipping everyone else who was waiting a long time before her. We checked in for one night only to enjoy Coqui waterpark and Palomino island with our children. The island requires reservations but was closed the day we checked in unfortunately, even though I was told when I called to book that the island was open daily. We ended up having to make reservations for our check out date instead which was a little inconvenient as we had nowhere to change comfortably since checkout was 11AM. After check in, we arrived to the room and the views were incredible. The views at this resort are nothing less than breathtaking. The room was updated after hurricane Maria, but some things were left without remodel. Little things such as the shower and shower fixtures had erosion on the sides which is no big deal, but not expected for a luxury hotel. Later that night, when we went to bathe the little ones, the water in the tub and faucet all came out brown. We called customer service and we’re told to run the water till it became clear, so we ran it for about 20 minutes. I got upset as this is a very expensive hotel and although I understand construction is going on, there shouldn’t be issues like that where I feel unsafe using the essentials in the room I’m staying at. Speaking of construction, there is ALOT OF IT. I would say the hotel is only about 15-20% done. There are machines and construction EVERYWHERE. The pool and water Park is where we spent most of our time… it was great. Palomino island was a let down. It’s full of rocks and gets deep very quickly for the little ones we were with to enjoy, so we ended up back at the waterpark as it was awesome. Overall, I wouldn’t stay again as I visit Fajardo frequently and have other options. If you are wanting spectacular views, this is your pick.

We had been here before and loved it in the past so when kids heard it had reopened we booked a night. So glad we only booked one night because it was subpar and not worth the $300or so we paid.

Like everyone said check in was a mess, long line to initially check in, did not get room till almost 6pm. We had gotten there early and so we used the main pool/Splash Bar for a few hours as you are not allowed to use Coqui Waterpark on your first day (disappointing for kids, more on waterpark later). Main pool is fine but small for the amount of people there. The portion of the pool right below the main pool with lap lanes etc is still under construction (see photos). The plus at the main pool are the servers, Mya was great and so was the male server, both were attentive.

The room we got was ok minus the fact that the main door was stuck and could hardly be opened, after several tries and pushes we got in (also got stuck inside trying to open it a few times).. same with the terrace doors, we had an amazing view but only got to go on terrace once as those doors were impossible to open unless you used major muscle and hurt yourself in the process. The alarm clock/docking station apparatus had cut cables and no plug, did not see the point of it even being on nightstand??

The reason for our stay was the Coqui water park since Palomino island is not available yet, so we were hoping to spend the day at the waterpark. Disappointing since you can only spend a few hours there, you must make reservations the night before for either 9am-1pm or 2pm-6pm but really they kick you out 20 min before that so make sure you go on time to get the max amount of time there. The waterpark was fun, same as it always was, just some new murals but same slides and lazy river. Valeria was super nice there, most staff didn't seem too thrilled to be there.

With the limited restaurants open, we tried them all. Pool cafe was great for lunch, long wait but good pool food. Las Brisas was disappointing for dinner, but Melany our server deserves a special mention, she was attentive and pleasant (food was not great but her service made up for it). The coffee shop had NO milk for coffee in the morning, only almond milk, what coffee shop does not have milk?

At check-out we left something behind in the room and did not realize until we were back in Condado. It was a big white bag with two stuffies that are obviously sentimental to the kids so we tried for days afterwards to call and as many have said here NOONE picks up the phone. Tried leaving messages and comments on Facebook , again NOONE replies, very sad as we could have had someone pick up the bag if hotel would confirm it was there. Other hotels mail you forgotten items, this hotel does not even pick up phone or respond to FB messages..
So overall a disappointing stay, will not be returning for a while, definitely not until all the pools/facilities/restaurants and Palomino open..

I just traveled to Puerto Rico for the first time and after looking online decided to stay at El Conquistador. First things first there is no airport shuttle and the resort is almost an hour from the airport. We were able to find an uber which was around 45 bucks to take us to the resort but due to its location when we checked out we had to have the resort set up transportation to the airport and it was 135 bucks. The resort exterior is very beautiful and after pulling in and seeing it I was very excited to see our room. Lets just say it was not as beautiful. We stayed in room 1312 which you had to take a trolley to reach. It was listed as a double queen room, the queen mattresses were set on top of a wooden platform so they sit very low to the ground. The resort is not beachside you have to take a boat over to the private beach that closes at 5pm. FYI the waterpark consist of three slides and a lazy river. The restaurant that is located upstairs that serves breakfast was extremely hot and was not air conditioned. I decided to try the brunch at the restaurant down by the Marina closest to our room. I went in and was seated by the hostess, I sat there over 25 min. I ended up leaving and when the hostess asked why I was leaving I explained that I had been waiting for over 25 min and was not even greeted. The internet is very unstable in our room. So watching Netflix in the rooms was very challenging. The hospitality and service at this resort was terrible. All in all I will never stay at this resort again nor will I recommend it to anyone.

We booked 4 rooms last week and had a total of 16 guest. After dinner on our second night we came to the room to find housekeeping inside at 9:30pm. There were a total of 4 people (2 security) guarding the door and would not let us in. The safe was open but we had taken our valuables with us because staff can easily open these, luckily nothing was missing. As if this was not bad enough at the same time they were attempting to get into the room next to us. The guest were sleeping because they'd been out all day. When the man heard the commotion he came to door and as he opened security pushed and hit him in the head. Needless to say we both filed complaints as there was definitely something shady going on. All other hotels were booked and/or could accommodate all of us so we had no choice but to stay. As for the rest of the stay, we booked based on this Hotel's reputation and past history but this is far from the Resort we thought. In fact this is not even a Resort this is a Hotel with a couple of pools. Half the property is under construction and the rooms are very dated - we've stayed at Hilton hotels with nicer rooms. The beach was closed and the so called nighttime activities ended at 12am instead of 1am, which they advertised. Unless you play pool just go back to your room. Also bring your own drinks because there is no where to get a bottle of water once everything closes. Our vacation was saved by all the other stuff the Island has to offer. Don't kid yourselves, if you want a resort, sorry to say (born in PR so it's sad) go to another Island or Mexico. El Conquistador will not provide that Resort experience you expect and PAY for.

Please allow me an opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Marshall Tullos, Managing Director at the EL Conquistador Resort. Our Guest Service Team has advised me of the service you received during your stay with us. As we have alerted guests via our website and on the different media outlets, the Resort is undergoing a complete renovation process of all our rooms and recreational facilities in order to offer our guests an experience like no other hotel on the Island. The renovation work and in-place controls for the prevention of COVID-19 infections pose great challenges on our staff and sometimes it is very difficult to provide the service that our guests deserve. We would like to take this opportunity to apologize again for the situation you experienced during your stay at our resort. We always strive to provide the best service to our guests and on this occasion, we did not exceed your expectations. For this reason, and at the moment, we are offering complimentary self-parking and free access to the Coquí Waterpark. On the night of the incident described in your review, you and your family were assisted by our Director of Security, who, together with our Executive Team, apologized and reached an agreement with you to compensate your family for this inconvenience. I hope that you were able to enjoy the rest of your time in Puerto Rico once we sorted everything out and I am glad we were able to find you a compensation that was to your satisfaction. In addition to that, since we value your feedback, we would like to extend you a 50% discount for your next visit to the resort. Regarding the money misplacement, the Puerto Rico State Police were called immediately to fully investigate the allegations. After a thorough investigation, they concluded that no items were missing from your guestroom, reason why no complaint was filed. As we explained to you and your family at that moment, the electronic safe can only be opened with the code assigned by each guest. Furthermore, your family members confirm that they were not sure your valuables were, or if indeed they were ever inside the safe. Regarding the other situation to which you refer in your review, as explained to you, our security personnel responded to a call from another guest who requested emergency assistance but there was a confusion with the room number of this guest, which unfortunately caused the incident in question. We truly care about every guest that visit us, and our priority is to create the best memories and experiences for them at our Resort. Our executive team and our over 300 employees take your concerns very seriously, which is why we have taken the necessary measures to ensure these types of events don’t happen again. Once again, we offer our apologies and look forward to providing you a better experience in the near future.

Family with children please be aware that they offer a breakfast package and charge extra average $111 dollars per night and only give you a voucher for $45 dollars. Once I noticed that issue on March 25th 2023 I requested to be changed to the normal rate and so far they have not given me all my money back. Customer service sucks at this hotel : you talk to the managers, they say you are right and then the manager never gets back to you. See proof by your self and stay somewhere else !
If you decide to stay here note that:
If you don't tip the cleaning lady of the first day they will not leave bottles of water for you.
The bathroom is not well cleaned in between stays
Food, drinks and water and extremely expensive
Tours are over charged by the hotel
The bioluminescence lagoon is in front of the hotel, no need to take a cab and pay $120 for it, you can literally walk from the Marina
You can't take any food to the beach or water park, they will take it away from you

We throughly enjoyed our week long stay in late January to February. We went after the busy holidays and had the resort nearly to ourselves. The final renovations are geared to end in two years but I think going now before it is at full capacity is ideal. No waits at restaurants, plenty of pool chairs, and an empty waterpark to tire out the kids. We only heard construction noise one day while at the water park. All the restaurants are now open and I thought the food was pretty good, but pricey. We had a car and ate out a few times. All the people working there were very friendly and met requests with a smile. We had a connecting room with our family. Both our rooms had minor issues and it was across from the maid's stockroom which made noise an issue. Halls are very loud when people walk by and doors slamming. The bathrooms definitely have not been updated and were quite worn but the rest of the room was nice and we had a decent night sleep. The coqui water park was awesome. My 6 year old was about an inch too short and they were sticklers for the height requirement. She was able to use a tiny slide, the zero entry pool, and the lazy river so she was happy with that. My 9 year old had a blast with the three big slides. One is super scary even for adults! We took the ferry to the island one day. The beach is quite nice. It is still under construction but there are beach chairs and a small grill tent with a few offerings for lunch. We took our snorkeling gear but there was nothing to see. We did take a snorkeling tour booked through the concierge that was very good. It took us to Culebra for pretty good snorkeling and then Culebrita to a beautiful beach. We also went to El Yunque (about 35 min drive) and Old San Juan (1 hour drive). Puerto Rico is very easy to get around and felt quite safe because everyone wears masks and you must show proof of vaccination to eat out or do tours. Even though the resort rooms fell a bit short, I would be happy to go back because of the warm staff, lush vegetation and epic views. Be sure to stop by and see the parrots. The cockatiel's hola hola never got old:)

There is plenty of coverage throughout the resort. Reserve ahead of time for cabanas which seemed nice but we did not use as there were so many umbrellas and quiet seating available(we went in August). Plenty of restrooms on island and around the resort, pools/waterpark.
