Detailed Reviews
This is in a really good spot but wouldn't go back. There are quite a few stairs to climb up to reception. The rooms are quite shabby but you are given clean towels and linen is changed daily. Unfortunately the rooms are not ensuite and people can easily walk in on you when you are in the bathroom. We had our first night's stay on a Sunday and would not recommend it as we were above the area were they have bands and this particular night it was a rock band - not the best when you are trying to sleep! You also feel quite isolated if you need assistance of any kind as the reception is only open for short periods and sometimes it was difficult to get hold of anyone. The breakfast was very basic - two choices of cereal and two choices of bread and some fruit.

Booked an ensuite room for one night as we wanted a budget stay ($110) in Sydney and like the Rocks area. Room was much smaller than expected based on photos but cosy and comfortable as first sight. Bathroom was daggy as they are very old but it was the dirty spa bath that disappointed me. Definitely had hairs in it and just looked grotty. Unfortunately the person in the room above us did use their spa so we couldn't sleep thanks to the loudness of the pump until they turned it off about and hour later. Bulky stand alone airconditioner was so loud even on the low fan setting we didn't use it and since there was no screen on the window we couldn't leave that open that either (since when we did open for a few seconds a mozzie fly straight in and had a good old time through the night feasting on our blood). The bed was comfy enough but the room felt stuffy all night. Luckily the pub was closed the night we stayed so it was quiet. Definitely wouldn't stay there on a band night. I understand it is tricky with fittings on old buildings, especially those of heritage value but quieter aircon and a screen would have made a difference. All in all, a generally tidy room in a good location but some improvements to comfort factors should be considered by management.

+1
First, the hotel review. The place is old and dated and could use some updating. We booked an ensuite room that faced the street. There are quite a few stairs to climb up to reception especially when lugging suitcases. The bathtub needs to be replaced as there were several rust stains. The rooms are small and spartan but clean and the bed was relatively comfortable. You might not want to stay here over the weekend as the band in the pub plays until after midnight. The street was closed when we were leaving the hotel because of the Saturday markets resulting us having to lug our luggage up the street to catch a taxi to the cruise terminal. Breakfast is not included.
Now the pub. We enjoyed eating lunch and dinner in the pub. Be sure to ask what their specials of the day are if you did not see them on the chalkboard when entering the outside seating area. We enjoyed the schnitzel, fish and chips and shepherd’s pie. Pints of cold Guinness were good too. There is live music inside the pub that was enjoyable. No complaints with any of the meals. The outside tables as well as inside were filled with locals and tourists alike.
Location, location, location. The Mercantile is located within walking distance of many of Sydney’s attractions such as the Harbor Bridge and Sydney Harbor. It’s located on George Street. Recommend. The room price is affordable, and the pub food is good.

Older style basic pub accommodation.
My husband and I have stayed here a few times and really enjoyed it. Close to all the city attractions & cruise port at circular quay.
This has been quite basic pub accommodation. Rooms have been clean and spacious. We have always booked a room that included an ensuite, which is adequate, clean, but dated.
Music bands play in the bar downstairs some nights, which can be heard in the rooms. However, this has never bothered us. It is usually finished by around 11pm.
On mornings of The Rocks market, the shelters for the stalls get erected very early in the morning and can be clearly heard in the front rooms.
The times we stayed there were no lifts, so you had to carry luggage up 1-2 flights of stairs (however, renovations are going to include a lift).
We have always found it quite adequate for a night prior to a cruise, but might not suit all.

We stayed here for a weekend. Great Irish pub and restaurant located in the heart of the “Rock” entertainment area. The weekend market is right out your front door.
A clean and friendly place. BUT you have shared bathrooms across the hall and good music until 11:30 pm that rocks your room. And no elevator so you have the privilege of climbing several steps.
The crowd is lively and friendly but also does not lend itself to getting to sleep early. The markets and local goods shopping is with in easy walking distance as well as the Circular quey harbor, the Sydney Harbor Bridge is an easy walk.

Stayed here for 7 nights. 1st night was woken up by a constant cracking on the floor was jetlagged from my flight from London so did not check. Next morning I woke up and discovered there was a hole in the ceiling and water dropping onto the carpet. The maids put towels on the carpet getting wet. Hotel very noisy at night. Would not stay here again.

I just wanted to write a message to say that the staff in the Mercantile went above and beyond to accommodate my friends and I after we were scammed tickets by a third party for their NYE bash. They listened to us and couldn’t have done more to help us. We are forever grateful to Charlene and Mick.

Flew 10 hours from HNL, exhausted, got here on a Saturday night and, oh my, forget about getting any reasonable sleep until after midnight due to the bar downstairs. It’s booming…
I was reasonably certain my wife was going to file for divorce when we finally got our luggage up the steps (no elevator). Great location, absolute fail otherwise.

Hello! We have just stayed here for a night, it was the worst night sleep ever!!
Please read my review before you book!!!
**DONT NOT SLEEP HERE** ABSOLUTE ROBBERY!! $300 for that, WOW, the owner is living the dream! A dirty cheap hotel turned nightclub, late extremely loud music that doesn't stop till 1am! The hotel is extremely dirty, hotel staff were rude and when we went to complain about the heavy loud music, they refused anything point blank! Such a beautiful place, there are better hotels within a 2 metre distance of this one! TAKE MY WORD, IF YOU WANT A AVERAGE/NICE HOTEL, GO AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE TO THIS PLACE!!!
Feel we had ensuite on 3rd floorring they are really helpful
Hello!
Yes, we have music from 3pm every Sunday and the legendary Shaylee Wilde still plays here from 8.30pm until late!
Hello,
Our twin rooms either have 2 single beds or 1 double and 1 single bed. Maximum occupants would be 2 or 3 respectively.
We also have a large room with 4 beds, 1 double and 3 single, which could suit a group of your size.
Please let me know if we can help you further, happy to!
