Everything about our stay here was excellent From the check in to check out we had a great relaxing time The only thing wrong was it was too short Despite the Hotel being 100% full for our Fri to Sun stay the staff were all very welcoming and friendly Our Horizon Club room was brilliant lovely lay out roomy nice balcony nice ammenities quality equipment and bedding The Club itself was very good for breakfast and evening snacks During the day other food is available however as no staff are on duty constantly after breakfast service until evening canapés and drinks this food runs out until staff check it every now and again Always nice to see the beautiful tropical fruit available We would start breakfast downstairs in the Backyard as they have an egg station where you can order eggs of any type (I had omelette with everything including chilli) and you could make yourself a better salad After this we would head to the club for the rest of breakfast as it was quieter and offered mostly the same as downstairs Every now and again we would pop into the club during the day for a coffee tea juice or snack and to sit in peace in aircon as it was warm and muggy outside Plenty to do in the local area within walking distance nice Night Market 4-10pm every night and another one called Rusty’s for during the day and it has heaps of food stalls…both worth a visit For our two days we just did walk arounds and did not venture out on tours or the reef or Forrest’s etc if was more of a relaxing time for us Local business needs support there as apparently Cairns turned into a ghost town during Covid they were hammered big time Many shops and business venues remain closed avail for lease etc A lovely pool is available for use and just be aware of not a lot of shade The gym is small but useful clean and tidy Back to the club for drinks and canapés 5-7pm and it was excellent for the two nights we were there with menu changing daily After that off to bed A most relaxing time Highly recommend

Hotel's Favourite
My husband and I stayed here for a few nights while exploring Cairns and the Reef. It was a great 'home base' literally right next to the marina. Rooms were clean and comfortable. We also had a small balcony facing the water. Staff were very helpful and housekeepers were available daily. If you are comparing it to the sister location in Sydney you may be disappointed. We actually preferred the more laidback beach vibe, especially given the location. Unlike other more metro locations, intl travelers will need an AU outlet adapter. There is a restaurant on site which was okay but a bit overpriced. There is also an outdoor pool in a lovely courtyard. Plus a gym and connected shopping center. As some have said, the layout is different but we didn't mind it. We are used to walking. If this is harder for you, maybe mention at the time of booking you'd like to be closer to the elevators/lifts.

Cairns is a good place to stay overnight to enjoy some of the local attractions such as Bungee Jumping or White Water Rafting which can be a long way from a resort area such as Port Douglas. We had reserved the royal suite which was unavailable so the hotel comped us for the night with two connecting executive marina bay view rooms. The rooms were decent and had pretty views with balconies and there were many treats on arrival. Can't complain about that. The hotel is well situated by the marina because the actual strip in Cairns a few blocks away is pretty downmarket so we were glad to be a bit away from the riff-raff. The hotel has a shopping mall attached to it which is mostly vacant. The business lounge is fine and buffet breakfast at the lobby-level restaurant was also fine. Dinner at that restaurant was also decent although they managed to mess up mashed potatoes like nobody else has ever done. My biggest disappointments here were that the pool was cold and that the gym was an embarrassment to the Shangila chain of hotels. The gym was a few old rusty weights and some dumb-bells along with some cardio equipment. I expected better at a 5-star hotel and at the Shangrila chain, and felt totally deprived on the physical fitness level. I was told by management that they are planning to renovate the gym in the coming year. I was also told that the pool is not heated because 9 months of the year it is so hot that it is not necessary to heat it. My response is that a 5-star hotel still has to provide a heated pool the other 3 months of the year. If I were coming to Cairns, I'd look for another hotel with decent facilities before deciding on this one.

We spent 12 days in the Shangri La Cairns in Room 4005 which is located on the top floorof the North Tower of this spread out triangular hotel building. The room faced East and was large and overlooked the Marina through large windows with sliding doors on two sides opening up onto a balcony. There was constant entertainment with the yachts and tour catamarans and twice a 100000 tonne cruise ship passed by The building had we understand rooms on two floors along the three sides of the triangular shape, the East rooms overlooked the Marina, the North a sea view, and the west looked over a car park. The rooms on the inside of the passageways looked to the centre where there was a nice pool and shrubs. We found the design of the hotel strange and irritating. It was especially so for us being in the north tower which is the farthest distance along a long corridor from the lobby and the Horizon club which is tucked away on a mezzanine overlooking the lobby. The rooms are only accessible via an elevator using the key card from ground to the first and second floors. Access to our tower room required the use of two elevators as did access to the lobby and horizon club. This access to floors using the elevator was irritating and confusing as some areas were only accessible with the key card and others seemingly open to outside visitors for meetings in conference rooms on the second floor. The impression we developed was that a strange building occupying triangular land had been bought by Shangri La and because of its prime location it had been turned into a hotel. In our opinion it failed to be a user friendly hotel in many ways. It was also disconcerting that the elevator system HAD to be used to access rooms and that to separate public and private areas there were no stairs open to guests although there was a fire escape. When the lifts failed one morning we and 8 others were left standing on the second floor until I called reception and the lifts were “re-energised.” Maintenance in this hotel was lacking. In our room which cost over $700 a night on some nights. Wooden coloured furniture had been over painted and was chipped everywhere. Biggest disappointment was the shower which had deep mould in the tiles which when reported to the acting manager Alex he opined that it was ingrained. It was a bad look for any hotel and should not be on offer in such an expensive room. Re-grouting is neither a long term or costly job,(unless all bathrooms needed work). Then a few days into our stay we found sandals left by a previous occupant in the wardrobe. The standard lamp in the room was clearly broken and unusable when we arrived. In the end I disconnected it feeling it was dangerous with a potentially open live wire had it been accidentally switched on. It ought to have been removed before we arrived and in the end we asked a staff maintenance man we met in the corridor to remove it. Despite everything we did find positives. The bed was super soft and comfortable, the club lounge food was good and the selection adequate, drinks were better than minimal priced wine and spirits, and the three staff we saw regularly, Mdee, Catherine and Yvette were hard working, friendly and always ready to help and meet requests. Keeping the food up to standard required them collecting it from the restaurant a floor below where the kitchen for the restaurant was located was a challenge they overcame every day. So a few summary conclusions: The hotel is not to Shangri La standard. Public areas look tired and too many fittings are worn including carpet in the lobby. It does not represent value for money. It is very well located. The staff are superb and room staff in particular have too much to do and things get missed. It needs a major maintenance upgrade. TLC would help. The rooms are not easily accessible and many are too far away from facilities and not easy to find. Directions to rooms could be improved. We saw many “lost souls” during our stay who were usually new arrivals.

Dated and dirty. Considering the price I would have not expected a dirty mouldy room. The outside is also showing wear and tear and the room was very noisy. Had a voucher for breakfast for 2 asked at front desk if I could use as breakfast for 1 over 2 days instead and was told nothing to do with them ask the restaurant and they said fine, check out charged for 2nd breakfast when I confirmed what had happened the Manager said not restaurant decision, really, ended up refunding. Would never stay here again and would not recommend.

From the moment we pulled into this hotel we knew it wasn't going to be like any prior experience with a Shangri-la. No bellman or doorman to help us inside. Oh, and once we stepped inside! The lobby is tired and dirty. The reception staff were nice and helpful. Once we entered our room, we noted a beautiful view of the ocean and a plate of macarons on the table. The room is large, but without any decor or warmth. The bathroom was large enough, but with mold in the shower tiles. The beds are hard and the pillows were uncomfortable. The restaurant downstairs and an apparent club keep the base and music pounding until around 2am, what a nice surprise. Once you learn the maze of this 2 story hotel, you'll see the ripped, dirty carpet, dirty walls. To say this place needs a refresh is an understatement. The pool area was nice, as was the lush gardens in the courtyard. In my opinion, they shouldn't be charging the fees of a 5 star hotel when they simply carry the name, not the actual amenities.

I stayed for 5 night, booked 5 rooms and my families loved it! it's a beautiful hotel with lovely employees especially Kevin. He'd been assisting us from arrival until our departure with smile and beyond expectation. When we had difficulties to book best restaurants in town by online where there's max for 8 people (we're travelling with 12 people and from Indonesia) he helped us to make it comes true. Absolutely amazing!

Excellent quality lobby and pool area, and very large rooms. Good location on the pier. They lend you towels to take on a reef excursion. Water, milk and tea/coffee provided in the room. Nice linens. Expensive but worth it.

We stayed for 8 nights in a Marina view king room. From our arrival everything was perfect. This is a large hotel, and our room was not ready until about 3.30pm, however they gave us a cocktail voucher and we sat and enjoyed the views. We stayed in room 1090 which was not far from the pool, however the hallways are long so be aware you could have a walk to get to the lift. The staff were always happy and cheerful. As we had a marina view we used the balcony abit to soak up the views of the marina and activity. Beautiful pool and gardens to enjoy. Our room included breakfast daily and you are able to request eggs benedict or poached eggs cooked by the chef. The location is the hotels main draw and right on the boardwalk where there are many choices to dine. It is also a couple of minutes walk to Wharf A if going out on the reef.

We stayed for 5 nights in a twin suite room and it was large and had a great view of the marina. The room was great and we really enjoyed the breakfast buffet included with horizon club. The only improvement that would have been nice was the pool was not heated, so we were unable to really enjoy it as it was windy and cool during our visit. Overall, great location and we really enjoyed our stay.
