Our stay was very enjoyable. Staff were very helpful. The weather was great at our time of stay. Be aware that this Hotel is located in the busy tourist area on the Esplanade in Cairns, so there is some evening noise from nearby restaurants etc...

This hote lhas the -erfect location but is very tired and not up t the standard of other accor hotels., especially considering thre price at over $300 per night. The wi-fi was trerrible, the TV was ancient and barely watchable. One clean in 9 days barely seems sufficient.

our apartments was on Southern side level 3. Morning sun came through the sliding door each morning. if weather is hot the northern side can get a bit warm in summer. location is excellent - everything you need is within walking distance. late afternoon music from next door can be bit loud but settles down in the evening.

The location and view from the room was brilliant. Easy access to the esplanade and to the harbour. Plenty of cafes and restaurants all in walking distance. The main shopping centre would taking about 10 minutes walk. It is very flat to walk and very easy. Lots of Tourists booking agents in the area and all very helpful plus the resort can also book for you. The Esplanade in Cains would be one of the best in the world, clean and well kept. It needs more Tourists to help the area. Highly recommend. The room I had would cater for 1-2 people.

We booked this hotel for four nights at the recommendation of a travel agent. We understood that it was not a five star property and we are more than ok with accommodation that is simple and clean. Since we had four nights there, we really wanted an apartment so we could take care of our laundry, relax in a living room and cook in our own kitchen after three weeks of traveling around Australia. Unfortunately, we stayed in room 403 at Breakfree and it is among the worst accommodations I’ve ever stayed in. The minute we walked in the door I knew I couldn’t stay there but we checked in late (nearly 10 pm at night) and had never been to Cairns before so we had no idea where else to go and of course the front desk at Breakfree is not manned after 5 pm so there was really nothing we could do right away. We were forced to sleep there because we felt we had no other options but it was so bad that we left and rebooked someplace else even though our room at Breakfree was non refundable. We were greeted by a cockroach looking insect sitting right inside the front door. The room smelled musty. The air conditioner should dry out the room but this one never did despite the fact that the unit was set with the fan on full blast before we entered the room. It was so humid and damp in the room at all times that we could not sleep well at night - the dampness made us very cold even though the air conditioner wasn’t really cooling, it was just blasting out recirculated air. As a result, nothing would dry in the apartment. My swimsuit hung for 24 hours and was still quite wet. Our bath towels stayed wet long after showering. Breakfree promises laundry facilities in the unit but there was no dryer, only a washer. Since the room was humid and damp constantly there was no way to do laundry because there was no way to get it dry. Inside the kitchen cabinets were also very musty - the damp was inside them and it made everything inside the cabinets smell. Of course anything that’s damp is a perfect breeding ground for mold and there was plenty of it in room 403, especially around the shower. There is no exhaust fan or window in the bathroom so if you take a shower the entire apartment turns into a steam room. Of course management has signs all over the apartment warning you that if you leave the bathroom door open, the steam will set off the fire alarm and they will charge you $1200 for the false alarm and they direct you to keep the bathroom door closed while you shower. Is it any wonder, between this practice and the substandard air conditioner, that the bathroom is full of mold? The bed was hard as a stone and had deep grooves visible where people sleep. The mattress is years past its useful life. You can hear everything going on in other apartments. Our neighbor was playing guitar and singing at 10 pm at night. And there were weird food smells in the elevator and hallway. But for the fact that we had a private bathroom, our room was no better than a backpackers. Our window faced a wall, on the other side of which was a bar or restaurant or something that went until late at night. Of course the air conditioner fan that ran full blast 24/7 at least helped drown out some of the non stop noise from next door. Some people may think Breakfree’s location is great because it sits right on top of the Cairns night markets and in the middle of the Esplanade. It is indeed convenient, but the location is in my opinion more appropriate for younger travelers that want night life and to socialize until all hours. There are plenty of other hotels that are much better suited for two middle aged adults at comparable prices just a few blocks away (5 mins walk max) - still very convenient but not in the middle of the constant glitz and noise of the Esplanade. I got the creepy crawlies just being there because everything was so gross. I didn’t want to touch anything and I certainly didn’t want to sleep there. After two sleepless nights we rebooked other accommodations for our last two nights and paying to move is some of the best money I’ve ever wasted. I did tell the front desk staff when I turned in my key that the room was horrible and that they shouldn’t rent it out. They admitted that the units are privately owned which I understand means they are not necessarily all the same standard. I showed the front desk staff pictures of the mold and was told that once it starts growing it’s hard to stop. I asked for a partial refund and was asked if I reported my concerns while I was there. I said we were unable to because due to our arrival time and our tour schedule the front desk was not manned while we were there during the first two days, to which I was told that I should have called the night manager and asked for another room. I had no idea that was even an option. They are right that I did not report my concerns during the stay but if they would just look at the room I think they would feel bad about charging anyone money for it! Anyway the front desk staff said that there was nothing they could do about the room now since we’d already left but could I please write everything down and email it to them so they could share it with the owner. Anyway, I share this so others don’t have to go through what I did. There are lots of other accommodations in the heart of Cairns that are far and away better than this at similar prices. I cannot understand how Breakfree has any good reviews. Do not be fooled by the ratings. You won’t know what you are going to get until you get there. Do not stay at Breakfree!

Easy check in and out by helpful staff. Great location with great views. Good air conditioning which was great because of the heat. Kitchen setup could be a bit better. There is no dishwasher which is not a problem, but it was difficult to use the dish rack on a tight bench.
