Super social hostel, with lots of things happenings would recommend for young social people. The room was clean and the air conditioning worked great. Super close to everything, and the staff was very helpful. It gets noisy at night, but it was expected considering what kind of accommodation this is.
The place is alright if staying there only for a couple nights. Just a few things they could be more observative of is the amount of noise in the common rooms in the night, especially on floor 1. Rumors says that floor 4 is better. The dorms for 8 people are to small for 8 people living in there when several of them are staying for a longer period. The air-conditioning apparently do not work in all rooms and the toilets and bathroom was poorly cleaned everyday. The last thing I want to point out is the girl security guard at the desk checking people's room key was so rude to the guests. If you know you are only sleeping at Gilligan's the place is alright other than that buy a private room or find somewhere else
Where do i vene begin? My friend and i initially booked a 10 bedroom room as it was affordable for the 1 night stay. We knew that it would be a little hard sharing with 10 people but were hoping that everyone would be welcomg. Before i proceed, i am fully aware that the staff has no control over the people staying the hostel, this is a genuine warning for other females lookig to stay and a strong encopuragement to read the reviews and options befpore booking over the phone. We were followed by a small group of Nigerian men from out elevator to our room. One then insisted he must come in our room to grab his friends charger. When my friend and i opened the door he walked through and n o other guests had come in yet. He sat there looking at us, speaking to us n a different language and wouldnt leave for like 15 minutes. The next event that has left me traumatised was when my friend and i were down stairs dancing to the live music (which ws awesome might i add), a female around her 20s shoved her hands down the front of my friends pants, pulled her towards and used my friends leg to grind on. this was not 'dancing' with random girls we befriend, she was getting off to it. We managd to escape the situation i was waiting at the bar with my friend. the same girl came up behind, death gripped my throat and yanked my head back and latched her lips onto my neck. she then continued to grab me by pants and do the same thing she did to my friend. we told secuirty who were very dismissivbe until we pushed for her to get removed. Definitely not the experience i was hoping for.…
I arrived at about 11pm and unfortunately didn’t get a great welcome - the staff were more interested in continuing their conversation amongst themselves. This place does do what it says - it is clearly great for a nightclub and party scene. Therefore, I did expect some noise but the extent of the noise was quite incredible - in my dorm, I could not only hear the loud music but the floor and my bed literally vibrated until 3am (which happens every night until 3am). I had requested a quieter room further away from the club - whether all dorms are this loud or whether my request was ignored, I don’t know. I left after one night as after the music stopped at 3am and then all my dorm mates came in loud and drunk at 3.45am, I didn’t get to sleep until gone 4am and this would have been the same every night. If you want to be up all night partying, this is a good place for that, but if you want to enjoy the amazing day trips Cairns has to offer and be well-rested for that, head elsewhere!…
Sexist security guards. If you are a woman, having a good time - don’t go here. It’s ok for men to runaround like lunatics, but If a woman does 10-50% of what a man does - you are asked to leave because you are “too intoxicated”. The security here are from the 1980s; and it’s so disrespectful to be kicked out while all the sleezy guys are still on the dance floor with nothing being done and grabbing your arse. Absolutely zero stars - if I could!
has been a very long time since i've been out, and suprisingly enough we had a fab time! now older i had my concerns about going out here, but i didn't take anybodys advice and went there i found the younger generation to be more courteous than some people my age, so yes i will go there again for a night out!
Awesome place for a drink at the bar from 12 until later. Happy hour specials even better. In great part of Cairns. I will be back with friends this weekend. The music is good snd great vibe. Everyone looks to be having fun and to me that’s what it’s about. Whew 200 characters lol
We stayed in two private rooms, the rooms were basic which we didn’t mind however our room smelt like mould/ mildew! The aircon is directly above the bed and you could see the mould and grime in it! Reception were helpful and welcoming! Would be a great spot for young people however we came across some younger back packers that also complained of the noise from the night club below! We couldn’t hear noise from our room a few floors up but it does seem to be well known for a party atmosphere and quite noisy. So if you want to get rest go elsewhere.. if you want to party in the heart of Cairns it’s perfect! It’s in a great location, walking distance to amazing restaurants and shops! We were there to do a scuba dive course so didn’t spend much time in the hostel itself! It was for sleeping only! It was affordable, but musty! There’s a kebab shop across the road for midnight feasts (huge kebabs) and Fettas the Greek restaurant a few doors down, amazing food and a must visit! Would recommend for those on a budget but beware of the musty aircon and a potentially noisey stay.…
We came here as a group of friends for my last night out in Cairns & we danced the night away at The Attic. The music was fab, the vibes were awesome & we had a blast. The house photographer got some great photos of us together which were posted on The Attic Facebook page a few days later. We spent a good few hours dancing upstairs before heading downstairs to Gilligans. It was part of a great & memorable night out which started with a $500 bar tab at the Cotton Club & ended here for dancing.
Holidayed in Cairns recently and we are prone to BackPackers. Gilligan's is a large hostel in downtown Cairns. It is very close to the amenities of the area, including bars, restaurants and tour services. It also has a large swimming pool, rec area, challenge half court basketball, restaurant, pokies, stage and bar. Cheerful staff, good music, bargain drinks prices. All in all the place to be. Loved it and will be back.
