Nestled in a scenic natural setting, Fitzroy Island Resort captivates with breathtaking views, though accessibility can be challenging for some guests. Cleanliness throughout the property is generally praised, yet a number of visitors have highlighted issues in certain areas. The service has unfortunately fallen short of expectations, with reports of unprofessional behavior and lack of responsiveness.
Rooms often face criticism for maintenance concerns and dated aesthetics, and while the atmosphere is friendly, the vibrancy and upkeep of accommodations are inconsistent. Despite a variety of amenities, the value proposition is questioned by many who deem the resort overpriced.

Detailed Reviews
We're 7 locals who have visited Fitzroy many times over the years, but this weekend stay was in January 2021. We understand that 2020 and Covid-19 have impacted tourism and tour operators, but when you are open and the service is poor, why bother at all. The accomodation experience; we were 5 adults and 2 children renting 2, 2 bedroom suites. In each apartment, neither dishwasher worked at all. Each oven had quirks, one only broiled, the other oven would not cool down, smoked and the fan banged. None of this was made aware to us at booking or check in. We had to continually ask for single use dishwashing soap sachets. When we checked out and advised the receptionist, she said "no worries" over and over, "thank you for the feedback." No apology, no offer of a discount (the rooms are not cheap), no offer to speak with the manager. Another thing is that all the services seem to be separate from each other, so ferry transfers are not included in your room rates. Beach snorkel equipment hire also separate, so you can't charge it to your room. Foxy's restaurant food is poor and they make no attempt to make it any better. The kitchen is obviously run by backpackers who are there for a few weeks or months and really don't care. As a local who has stayed here several times over the years, it is very sad to see it in such decline. What is sadder, is that they don't seem to care. Service is everything in the service industry. The Island is lovely and the resort accommodation is nice but showing it's age and lack of upkeep. The service is crap. You have to ask yourself why the resort's own website doesn't afford me a place to write a current review, but it only lists reviews from 2019 and prior, when the upkeep was still acceptable. It's a lovely island to experience, but ask about the amenities when you book and get them to guarantee that everything is working or that they give you a discount and hold them to account if they don't meet your expectations. The choice is yours, just be informed.

We stayed in an Island Suite and self catered. The suite is very nice, comfortable and the kitchen is quite good. We brought our own food and we’re glad we did, food and alcohol here is basic and very expensive but that’s as expected. We took the package which included ferry transfers and breakfasts and paid $670 for 3 nights so we felt it was good value. The accommodation is over 3 levels and we were on level 2 which had a lovely view over the sea and glorious sunsets. I felt sorry for the guests below us as they did not have a view. Also, as the floors are tiled one hears every footfall and chair movement from above. Next time we would insist on the top floor and then show consideration for the guest below by treading softly.
We can not commend the staff highly enough; nearly all are international visa holders and it appears the resort has stood by them during the lockdown so that is to be applauded.
The included breakfasts are tasty and filling however we probably would have self catered that also had we had to pay for them (average $25 per plate).
Snorkeling is enjoyable with some healthy coral in places and lots of fish, turtles and rays.
Again, the best part was the staff; they were attentive and sweet to us.
Thank you

We booked a three night good to go package in a studio queen. On arrival pm at 2.30the room was set up as a twin. Reception advised it would be reconfigured into one bed but when we returned after 9pm nothing had been done. We were offered a room with a verandah (facing the ocean) for the night but as 221 had a view of the stairwell and fire hose I asked ho much it would be to upgrade for the second and third nights as well and accepted the offer of $100 per night.
Our second room, 114, was amazing. A fantastic uninterrupted view of the ocean.
The pool area was crowded with not enough loungers and was not cleared often enough of glasses and towels left behind.
The staff everywhere were excellent but there weren't enough of them. Pool bar was understaffed. The Zephyr kitchen also seemed understaffed but put out great food. We loved our meals for dinner but were underwhelmed by the weird package breakfast menu and the good quality but clearly 'cheap seats' meals provided. Why not one selection from the main menu plus a hot drink and a juice?
Foxy's was a great location with good pub food and an excellent happy hour.
Drink prices were pretty crazy everywhere - $11 for a can of Pure Blonde? That's ridiculous.
The general store had a good selection of stuff including sandwiches that we bought for lunch each day.
Snorkelling was fantastic at each end of the beach, especially heading south from Foxy's. Coral was so healthy.
The walks are also excellent and provide a great work out. Just make sure you follow the advice and take plenty of water.
We'll definitely go back to Fitzroy but will not book a studio again. They have no privacy, no outddor space and there's a close to 50% chance you'll get a room with a view of a huge retaining wall (all ground floor rooms) or the stairwell and fire hose reel and extinguisher (at least eight or nine rooms on each of the three levels).
They are doing some major maintenance work to tidy the resort up (didn't interfere with anything) but the weird floor plans of the buildings can't ever be changed. If you just use a room to sleep in you'll be fine anywhere but the bars close early (pool bar 6, Foxy's 8) so unless you buy takeaway alcohol at Foxy's the evenings are pretty quiet.
Spectacular location and with the right room, amazing place to stay.

The island is amazing but the resort is old and food and drink options are terrible.
Unfortunately, we spend much of our time waiting for the over priced and slow food on the island. BYO food and drink is a much better option, there are also free BBQs at the camp ground.
The resort options and set up are a shame as a bit of work and better management would make this such a nice place. There is nothing on or open at night so we found ourselves in our dark and dingy room each night watching TV.
There are three options: Zephyrs restaurant, Foxy’s and the pool bar.
- Pool Bar: the only alternative option to the very expensive restaurant for dinner. This food was a joke, we paid $22.50 for a fajita, which was a very small wrap with a couple of pieces of chicken and $20.50 for a Naan “pizza” which was no bigger then my hand. The pool bar had one bartender who served all customers, prepared all drinks (inc cocktails), served food and cleaned tables. Service was naturally very slow and took about an hour to get this terribly overpriced food. No atmosphere at the pool bar just a couple of tables and chairs thrown around, very poorly set up and run.
- Zephrys restaurant: very expensive with mains between $34.50 and $42.50. The restaurant is the only option for breakfast, we were told no reservations were required and then had to wait an hour to get a table. Breakfast was overpriced especially as much of it (bread and meat paddy) was not fresh, hard and had clearly been defrosted.
- Foxy’s Bar: the pros for the bar end at the nice view. Waited over an hour at lunch for a cold $24 hamburger and butter chicken with barely any chicken. After about 45 minutes I asked if the food had been forgotten and I was unapologetically told it will be another 15mins, I asked if an hour for lunch was normal and again unapologetically was told it was. Luckily we had more than a day on the island as this took up much of the first day. Skip the cocktails as well, they are made with artificial sugary syrups rather than actual fruits.
It’s worth staying a night so you have more time on the island but bring a bottle of wine and a picnic and set up to watch the sunset, stay as far away from the resort as you can!

I bought the VIP yearly package which gives you one free nights accommodation a year. We booked an extra night and stayed for two nights. The resort is overpriced for the quality you receive, and the service at the restaurants is poor. Our bathroom wasn’t clean, and our patio door lock was snapped off.
If you have the VIP card, it states you get discount on equipment hire. This is only for the Fitzroy shop (which is currently closed due to covid). You can not use this for the pop up shop that hires kayak’s, stand up paddle boards etc.
The small convenience shop is extremely overpriced - so take your own snacks/drinks with you.
WIFI is not included in the price of your room, and you have to pay extra for this.
I would suggest going to Fitzroy for a day trip as the island is beautiful. I wouldn’t stay at the resort again.

We took a 3 night package but left after 2 nights. We had no expectations about the food on offer at the island but thought it would be edible. The bar food, burgers etc. all fried save for a few salads - read bag of greens thrown in bowl with protein adds such as 'poached prawns' - who poaches prawns? Tasteless and translucent. The burger on first day was inedible. Cold and processed. The menu in Zephyr reads almost too good to be true. It was. Items like duck salad, means you need to know how to cook these things. They couldn't. Panacotta was a gelatinous coconut cream. Please keep the menu simple then no one is disappointed and untrained staff can produce. Train your team. Both in and out of the kitchen. They were trying very hard but had nothing to work with. This place COULD be really good if they spent money and time on the menu, food quality and cleaning the rooms and balconies thoroughly so we don't have to live with the chronic mould spawned all over them. Fix the lift to the 3rd floor that appears it's been out for over a year along with the exposed wiring on the walkways that will undoubtedly become a danger to anyone who is walking under it in a storm.

My husband and I stayed at the Fitzroy Island Resort which was disappointing. The staff were friendly enough but the cleanliness of the entire resort was pretty disgraceful for Australian standards. Our room was ok, very dark and musty but the bathroom had mould spores all over the wall tiles and a clump of black hair in the shower recess with empty soap wrappings on the floor in the shower. The outside verandah was really gritty and furniture had not been wiped for a very long time. The pool area was dirty with old dilapidated furniture and the pool itself needing a few repairs to broken tiles etc. The food was another major letdown with a pretty limited at Foxys Bar. Would have thought a few daily specials or even pizzas, nachos etc would have been a hit but unfortunately not on the menu. We dined at Zephyr restaurant one night which was horrible. The risotto was unpalatable and salmon over cooked.
The island itself was beautiful and the walks to the lighthouse and lookout were sensational. The water was beautiful and clear with abundance of fish and turtles.
The resort appears to lack good management and maintenance throughout. The staff are friendly enough but have not been trained properly which reflects in the poor food, cleaning, and bad cocktail making in Foxy’s which is $16.50.
Maybe next time we may just go for a day trip as Fitzroy Island is stunning!

We stayed here over Christmas 2019 for 5 nights. It is a gorgeous tropical island and a short ferry ride from Cairns. We rented a Welcome Bay apartment which was on the top floor of the hotel wing. This was a beautiful, spacious, well appointed apartment with a gorgeous bedroom, balcony with sea view, a lounge area, dining area, kitchen and untility cupboard containing both a washing machine and a drier.
The island tries to be two things. A luxury hotel and a day trippers paradise and the hotel suffers as a result of this. Even allowing for the fact that it was Christmas, we were surprised by the hundreds of day visitors during the time we were there. Although day trippers were not allowed to enter the resort, this did not apply if they bought breakfast in the restaurant. Thus the dining room could be very croweded and oversubscribed in the morning.
The Zephyr Restaurant in the evening was very good, both food, service and ambience, especially on the outside deck watching the sun set whilst eating dinner..
Foxy's, which is the other "restaurant" is a large canteen type cafe/bar and in our opinion served the worse food that we had ever tasted. Because of the closure of Zephyr's on two evening occasions, we had no alternative but to eat here and on both evenings, we did not eat the food as it was so appalling.
If intending to self-cater, do not rely on the small island shop which has very little to buy. Follow the example of many of our fellow residents and bring a well stocked cold box.
The turtle rehabilitation centre was well worth a visit to see turtles up close and learn about the conservation working being undertaken on the island. A trek to Nudey beach is a must if you can climb a steep rocky path. (It is not a nudist beach, nude swimming is forbidden). Our visit here on Christmas morning, before the day trippers arrived, was awesome.
The hotel staff really did their best to look after guests. We had a very enjoyable visit to this beautiful island despite our experience at Foxy's.

We spent five days in Fitzroy Island in an attempt to support the local tourism industry and disconnect from the outside world. After all, that’s what Queenslanders do, right? Support each other when things get tough.
In exchange we had (not in a particular order) the beach bar closed from 6pm on weekdays, meals systematically turning up with missing ingredients (or not being available at all, although shown in the menu), rooms not being serviced and an overall rundown resort with an obvious lack of maintenance and care.
I know that although the beach bar was closed, there was the so called “pool bar” available until 8pm (the depressing one with no views and surrounded by a sad, poorly maintained pool and an a gaming arcade). I also admit that, being a vegetarian, I could still choose between two different meals for lunch or dinner (if one of them wasn’t removed off the menu, as it happened to us a number of times... imagine our surprise when your order has key ingredients missing more than once). I could even argue that I could have asked the understaffed resort to make my bed or clean up the room every day (not sure if I could have ignored the mould in the bathroom ceiling and pretend it wasn’t there for too long).
My point is that I’m not complaining about the overpriced meals or the lack amenities (which I haven’t even described in detail - $34 for a bottle of Chardonnay that you can get at the bottle shop for $6.50? I know because I checked - . I’m just disappointed about the fact that management knows that, once you’re in the island, there’s nowhere else you can go, there’s no alternative bar or restaurant and there’s nothing you can do about it, because the answer is always:” it’s because of Covid”, “there was a miscommunication” or “sorry, we will pass this onto management”.
PS: the staff was amazing and the island is pure tropical beauty, but the resort management can’t live off that and pretend that it will compensate for the ongoing deficiencies that the resort has.

Spent 3 nights in the studio resort room.
It rained for majority of the 3 days I was there however the room was not a place to go relax in during the day. First room on bottom level was so mouldy I requested to change rooms the first day I got there. Next room on second level still smelt of mould, cockroaches and flies throughout the room
Black worms all throughout the shower.
Reception aren’t there at night and it says to call “9” from room if you need to talk to someone- I would have but there are no phones in the room. Reception sent housekeeping the next morning to take care of this- no one showed up until late afternoon. I had crockery and dirty towels and rubbish bags sitting out the front of my room for over a day as this is what I was told to do as there’s no make up of room due to covid. Staff were rude, seemed very unhappy to be there. Very inexperienced and young staff. No knowledge of food or wine they are serving. A couple of the girls in zephyr were really friendly.
Overpriced food. $40 a main. The food at zephyr was really nice though.
Cocktails are the same price as high end cocktail bars in the city which I’m happy to pay for if they are made correctly.
Coffee should be included w breakfast. And $6 for a coffee is the most i have ever paid anywhere in the world for a coffee.
The whole place needs to be deep cleaned, pest control sent it, refurbish the entire resort. If I’m paying $200/night which is the same price for a 5 star hotel in the city I expect the room to be a place I actually want to go spend time in.
Overall the island is beautiful, I enjoyed snorkeling and walking. The turtle rehab is great and the marine biologist had a lot of knowledge and seemed to be the only person who enjoyed their job on the island.
I would recommend to anyone to spend the extra few hundred a night and stay on green island.

Hi karenm642,
Thank you for your inquiry.
The ferry departs 3 times a day, 09:30am, 12:15pm & 5pm from Fitzroy Island and 08:00am, 11:00am & 01:30pm from Cairns.
I would recommend to bring groceries with you instead of traveling back to Cairns to get groceries. Each way is 45min.
There are two dining options on the island, Zephyrs restaurant and Foxys restaurant. Zephyrs is more formal, where as Foxys is more like a pub.
You can find more information such as menus and opening times on our website.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Tropical regards,
Jasmin Muller
