Customs House Waterfront Hotel, built in 1846, has been owned by the Jubb family since 1992. The Jubb’s are 5th generation hoteliers with owners Paul and Karen managing the hotel alongside their children Robert and Emily. Located 2 minutes walk from the Salamanca Markets, Brooke St Pier, Constitution Dock, Pennicott’s Tours, the ferry to MONA Museum and Hobart’s shopping precinct, we have the perfect location for your Waterfront getaway in Hobart. Customs House Hotel is an icon in Hobart. Built in 1846 for one of the early settlers, Charles Gaylor, whose name is carved into the front copping stone, it was named after Customs House (now Parliament House) next door. Affectionately called the “Chop House” it was, and still is, known for a good meal and a soothing ale. We offer 30 warm and charming accommodation rooms upstairs. All recently renovated with new bathrooms and furnishings, the rooms offer a touch of modern in a historic setting.

Perfectly located right on the waterfront, our 2 nights gave us ample time to soak up the atmosphere of being dockside in Hobart. Our 2nd floor room overlooked the docks, and gave us stunning views. The convenience of the restaurant with it's authentic atmosphere, and a beautiful menu made for a relaxing evening meal, while breakfast is enjoyed with sun sparkling over the water. An easy Saturday morning stroll to the Salamanca Markets, and all that the area offers in authentic Hobart history, it was the perfect way to finish our 2 weeks in Tassie.

Beautiful, silent and absolutely huge room after thankfully being offered an upgrade. Modern decor and beds are extremely comfortable. We ate dinner down in the bar, which was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed the seafood basket and the smooth & delicious Hobart Brewing Co Ale. My daughters enjoyed their burgers as well. Great music and atmosphere. Would definitely come again!

I was trying to decide between a seafood basket and a Steak. The waitress suggested the steak. When it arrived it was quite thin and medium to well on the edges and medium to medium rare (at best) in the middle. I ate a small amount and didn't enjoy the charred outside, it tasted burnt and it was nowhere near rare. At $42 I expected better. I expressed my concern and the attendant looked at the steak and agreed it was overcooked. The replacement was again medium on the outside, the attendant asked me to cut through the centre which showed some blood and was again at best medium-rare. He insisted the chef had measured the temperature in the middle at 23 deg and so it must be rare. I replied I really didn't want to eat it like that as it was overcooked. The attendant insisted it wasn't. I suggested I would like something different. By the time I was served at Fishermans Basket, everyone else in our group of 10 had finished their meal and while the Fisherman's basket wasn't too bad it was far from excellent, the chips were nice though. When it came time to pay I was asked to pay for both the steak (which I ate NONE of) and the Fisherman's Basket. I complained and said that was quite unreasonable. I was forced to pay $70 (the price of both meals). I assured the manager I would write them an appropriate review and I would never eat there again and make sure I let as many people as possible know that they cut their steaks too thin and overcook them.

I was booked into this accommodation for a night however due to a Covid lockdown in Hobart at the time of our flight arrival I had to cancel at short notice. The owners were polite and understanding despite it being none of their fault. My thanks and look forward to rebooking.

The customs house is A1 . Friendly and knowledgeable reception staff. Very attentive bar and restaurant staff as well. The rooms are a delight, clean and warm with great showers . Fab wine list , plenty of beer choice. Situated on the wharf within easy walk of attractions. All in all I give it 7 stars. And will definitely stay again.
