If U stay here don't be surprised to have Ur basic human rights taken away from..times are tough and the manager of this place made me feel like a second class citizen. The security after admitting to me I was right then asked me to let it go because standing up for urself with have me thrown out. It pushed me over the edge and I went back to my apartment and broke down

Chose this hotel based on the review but my experience was a disaster. If you decided to stay there, you will suffer a lot of noise and drought from unsealed windows. You can't rest the whole night. The reception was very unhelpful and ignorant. This is the first hotel of Ascott I have ever stayed in and will be the last.

The Somerset is currently being used as a homeless shelter. Unfortunately for female business travelers, this makes hotels like the Somerset very unsafe. I stayed here for a week and was abused by homeless people in the lobby and the gym. It makes it very uncomfortable to wait in the lobby when you are waiting for a cab.

Response from Somerset Somerset, Guest Services / Front Office at Somerset on Elizabeth Melbourne
Responded 14 Apr 2021
Dear Judy_07. We thank you for choosing to stay at Somerset on Elizabeth and for taking the time to share your feedback. Your feedback is important to us as it is through our guest’s comments that we can continuously improve on our product and services. Thank you for your feedback regarding the Govt assisted housing program our property is undertaking. Please accept my apologies, as this is not a true reflection of the high level of service we aim to provide all our guests. These matters are certainly not representative of the standards of service that Somerset usually provides. I’m sorry to read you were made to feel uncomfortable throughout your stay. These guests are people who have either lost their job or fallen upon difficult times throughout COVID-19. Quite a few, having stayed with us for an extended period, who we have continued to house until they’re granted permanent accommodation. They’re required to follow our strict guidelines & please be assured all our guests are screened and we do have 24/7 security to ensure everyone's safety. Once again Judy_07, thank you for your valued feedback. From all of us at Somerset On Elizabeth Melbourne, we look forward to welcoming you again at one of our properties and having the opportunity to serve you better. Yours sincerely Kelly Spratt Residence Manager

I was aware they charge $55 for a cleaning fee, but I question what they actually do for that fee, judging by the condition of the room, NOTHING. There is a very strong odour of previous pets. Where do I start with the problems, The check in they wanted the physical credit card not a tap and go on my phone, the air-conditioning has been going for 12 hours on 22* and has not moved, no instruction. The washer/dryer is the worst appliance I have ever seen and takes 4 hours to dry 4 shirts and make a hell of a noise. The shower tap mixer cant be adjusted and hanging off the wall, the shower is over a deep bath and is extremely dangerous for a less mobile elderly person. The is only one staff member in the property at any given time so if they need to leave the front desk there is only a security guard who is not able to assist. All in all I am extremely disappointed at this property, I used to work in this building some 40 years ago when it was Myer House, and it really looks its age. Covid touch points, the hotel does NOT practise a Covid safe procedures, the phone and remote control still have food and stains all over them. This would have to be the worst experience I have had for a very long time.

Dear Damon T. Thank you for your recent stay with us at Somerset on Elizabeth and for taking the time and effort to share your feedback. At Somerset we highly value feedback we receive from our guests as it motivates us to continue to strive for the high standards of service we desire to attain. It is clear from your response that you're dissatisfied with the condition & cleanliness of the apartment, including air-conditioning & washing machine, and miscommunication by staff, which is most disappointing to us here at Somerset. Please accept my apologies, as this is not a true reflection of the high level of service, we aim to provide all our guests. These matters are certainly not representative of the standards of service that Somerset usually provides. I apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused. I have personally addressed these matters with our housekeeping & maintenance department to ensure greater care is given in the future. Once again Damon T, thank you for your valued feedback. From all of use at Somerset on Elizabeth Melbourne, we look forward to welcoming you again at one of our properties and having the opportunity to serve you better. Yours sincerely Kelly Spratt Residence Manager

I had high expectations for this place because it's part of the Ascott group of properties and I know the Ascott is a reputable brand. The photos on the website also promised a lot. So imagine my shock when we entered our room – there were no cushions on the sofa or bed like in the website pics, and the lighting (unflattering dim white light) made the space look uninviting and sad. But those were the least of our problems. The kitchen (cabinets, stove and fridge) were old and grotty. The bathroom was not clean at all (see photos) – mildew or mold on the tiles/grout in the shower and rust or dirt all around the base of the shower door. I had to shower with my eyes closed because the sight of the walls and door made my skin crawl. So many guests in their reviews had pointed out how clean their bathrooms were, so I was surprised at the state of mine (is my idea of clean different from everyone else's?). The bathroom sink was also tiny and you couldn't wash your face or brush your teeth over it without water dripping everywhere. The sinkhole pipe also had rust or mildew in it. You'd think, in this time of Covid, cleanliness and hygiene would be a priority for establishments like this. Other drawbacks: – Very noisy during the night, we were woken up several times by police car sirens, people on the street yelling and screaming at one another, and cars driving past with their radios blasting. What's so difficult about sound-proofing the windows? – There was a phone in the room but no way to call housekeeping so I had to use my mobile whenever I needed extra toilet paper, towels, tea or milk. – Housekeeping didn't empty our trash or make our beds when they were supposed to. We had to ask for them to come service our room. – The lift lobby on our floor was crowded with cleaning staff and their trolleys/equipment on one of the mornings (see photo) – we could barely walk a straight path to the elevator. If there'd been a fire that morning I don't know how guests would have made it out of the building in time. I think this was a safety hazard more than anything. And to make things worse, the cleaning staff were just standing around, chit-chatting without a care in the world. – Our dining table was wobbly. – Hard, uncomfortable couch – No blackout curtains in the room – Cheap, thin towels in the bathroom – Cheap dishwashing and laundry detergent – these came in tiny packets that were never replenished during our stay – Our blankets were not the quilts you'd expect of a regular hotel; instead we got those cheap chenille throws sandwiched between two sheets. – Carpet in room had some old stains on it (blood or red wine stains, I couldn't tell) Plus points: – You can't beat the location, it's in the middle of everything and near the tram lines/train station, restaurants, shops, etc. – The bed was comfortable – Generally friendly and helpful front desk staff. I really wanted to like this place because I'm familiar with the Ascott brand. Plus, I liked the pics I saw on the website. I had this place in mind for some out-of-town friends for when they visit Melbourne later this year, but now that I've stayed here. I don't think I'll be recommending it to anybody. I certainly won't stay here again, either – it's part of the reason why I didn't really enjoy my staycation.
