For our first trip ever to Melbourne we stayed at the Alto on Bourke on a friend's recommendation and were very grateful for their good advice. We arrived around midnight after flight delays and after a minute or two's walk from Southern Cross station we were greeted at the hotel and efficiently booked in, we then slept soundly into the...

We loved staying in this characterful hotel. Everything worked beautifully, with a very comfortable bed, good kitchen and bathroom facilities, adequate storage, and for a nice change in a hotel, good lighting. Decor is tasteful too. The location is handy close to Southern Cross station and the sky bus to the airport. Staff were helpful and friendly, the breakfast was...

This is a nice little boutique hotel, close to casino, train, and short tram ride to shopping and sporting precincts. Staff were wonderful and very helpful. Stairs to bedrooms a little tight in 2 bedroom apartment (especially with a suitcase), but everything else was great. 2 full bathrooms, all kitchen essentials.

Lovely staff that could not do enough for you. The hotel was clean and bright. The Alto is so close to everything. A walk to Southern Cross Station and a block or two to Bourke Street Mall. Will definitely stay here again.

This hotel is is a little unusual, being an older narrow building which makes for an interesting internal layout. All the rooms on each floor (it is only four stories) are accessed from one side of long corridor which has a couple of doglegs at its start - some what disorienting, but certainly gives it character. The rooms are of...

Stayed Friday and Saturday nights prior to Sunday marathon. Approximately 35 minute walk to the G for marathon expo/bib collection and race starting area. About a 2 minute walk from the airport bus terminal. A 20 minute walk to restaurant/cafe areas. A reasonable location if you like walking. Friendly and polite check-in experience. No hassles and all as expected. Room...

Chose the Alto due to its proximity to Etihad Stadium, on the tram line into the city as well as being across the road from Spencer Street Train Station. The hotel as a whole was lovely, nothing too fancy but very helpful staff. Our room was great, all I needed from a room, clean, quiet, working telly, good shower pressure...

The Alto is just 2 minutes walk from Southern Cross station, which has the Skybus link to the airport that goes every 10 minutes ($18 one-way). It's 10 minutes walk to the shopping centres in the CBD and 10 minutes walk to the Queen Victoria markets. The rooms are modern, with good bathroom with good shower, comfortable king sized bed,...

Stayed for five nights and on the whole, it was a good experience. Plus points: - Hotel is very near to Spencer St station so if you are coming from the airport, just take the Skybus from the airport to the station, and walk a bit. Very convenient. - Room was ready when we arrived and we were able to...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
