Wasn't sure what to expect, had the room with shared bathroom and breakfast included. Pleasantly surprised, room was reasonably big and clean, the little extras like coffee bags instead of instant and decent toiletries were great. The shared bathroom was clean and was less inconvenient than expected. Breakfast was pretty good considering we only paid $99 for room. Down side...

Stayed at Sophia in February 2014. I had previously read some of the mixed reviews and was unsure whether booking this place was a good idea. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by standard and value. This is an inner city hotel at country rates. The staff were friendly and attentive. The included breakfast was good, and the attached bar served...

By reading the reviews you could be forgiven for thinking you are going to stay in hell, but it is not that at all. Yes - service is thin on the ground. But if you expect it and show some patience, it's fine. Not having a hotel full of staff means the costs are lower. They were always friendly and...

We stayed at Hotel Sophia on the night of January 8th, 2014. Arrived near midnight because we went to Phillips Island for the Penguin Parade. We called the hotel in advance to ask where we could park to check in and they said to park in front of the hotel. Because it was late and we were leaving early next...

I have stayed at Hotel Sophia quite a few times now, basically because of the convenient location and the breakfasts. Price is also usually very competitive. Easily the worst thing about the hotel has been the service, specifically at reception. It is nearly always understaffed - once when I was checking in (not on my last visit) had to wait...

We had a horrible night at the hotel. There was this very loud machine turning on every 3 minutes for about 30 seconds - impossible to sleep. The guy at the reception recognized this but couldn't do anything about it. Could not speak to a manager. Breakfast was very poor. Tried to contact the hotel after our stay by email...

This is one of the worst hotels I have stayed in if not the worst ever for following reasons: 1. Reception was rarely staffed. There was a bell at reception but it took ages until someone turned up. When staff turned up, they were not very helpful nor friendly. 2. Walls are so thin you can hear one person urinating...

Have stayed here numerous times before the renovations. Seems with those the warmth has gone.Staff are nowhere near as friendly. We had a shared bathroom and toilet paper would have been nice instead of hunting for it. Breakfast was a total let down. If you are on a tight budget this would be ok with breakfast provided and it is...

Booked in to stay for one night, dubious after reading reviews here, but was a last minute booking. Phone call two hours prior to check in to cancel my booking. Apparently room was damaged by previous booking occupant. Offered a downgrade or refund. Think we dodged a bullet on this one...

WARNING, stay here at your own peril. The most inefficient service we have ever encountered can be found at this, so called, hotel. Our credit card was mistakenly charged for 5 rooms, when we only booked 2. Over two weeks later and we are still waiting for our refund. We are also still waiting for our $150 'security deposit' that...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
