Have stayed here numerous times before the renovations. Seems with those the warmth has gone.Staff are nowhere near as friendly. We had a shared bathroom and toilet paper would have been nice instead of hunting for it. Breakfast was a total let down. If you are on a tight budget this would be ok with breakfast provided and it is...

Booked in to stay for one night, dubious after reading reviews here, but was a last minute booking. Phone call two hours prior to check in to cancel my booking. Apparently room was damaged by previous booking occupant. Offered a downgrade or refund. Think we dodged a bullet on this one...

WARNING, stay here at your own peril. The most inefficient service we have ever encountered can be found at this, so called, hotel. Our credit card was mistakenly charged for 5 rooms, when we only booked 2. Over two weeks later and we are still waiting for our refund. We are also still waiting for our $150 'security deposit' that...

Our first impression when we walked is was "gee this is small" but then we didn't spend a lot of time in the room so it wasn't a huge problem. It is conveniently located to the Southern Cross Station and local tram routes. It is only a short walk into the central CBD and Southbank. The staff were helpful but...

Basic no frills rooms but equipped with everything you could want. When I arrived the room was freezing but it did have a heater/air conditioner. A Tv, tea and coffee making facilities, shower. I was delighted by the lovely breakfasts. Not much space in the rooms but the price wasn't much either so it was good value for money.

Stayed twice during my Ausi holidays (2 nights + 1 nights). I found it very average hotel or backpackers hotel with very ordinary facilities. Both time did not got room before 2 pm. Very small reception (?), smaller then your office desk. Very slow lifts, poor housekeeping and extremely small rooms with very small bathroom (probably the smallest i ever...

We stayed at this hotel and our first probkem started as soon as we opened the door. the day time reception (indian woman) made it as dissicult as possible to check-in and was very unhelpful with offering us advice in places to go and eat in the area. The night got worse when the hotel room which we paid over...

The location was great. Near southern cross station and on relatively quiet king street, we got a good night's sleep with a room at the rear. The room itself was fine. Quiet, clean and a decent size. Bathroom was good too. Free self-service laundry was an added bonus. Wifi was paid which was a negative. Good selection of teas and...

Hotel Sophia is perfectly located, close to Spencer St train station and main CBD area is just 10 minutes walk away. Hotel itself doesnt look attractive and seems add on building is in progress. The room I've stayed in was spacious (king size and one single bed), clean and presentable. Bathroom was decent size with required amenities that you'll find...

Hotel Sophia is an easy walk from the railway station (about 15 minutes) and is located near the free tram line and within walking distance of Melbourne's main downtown shopping area. The Hotel does not present itself well right off King Street, but don't worry. Rooms are clean, quiet and secure. Hot, full breakfast was a good treat. The pub...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
