Visited on a Saturday afternoon with family. The server appeared a little rushed but was excellent and polite in his service. Good quantities of food and reasonable prices for the amount. Would visit again!

Good beer, great food. I stayed in the hotel, which was perfect for two nights. Affordable, not fancy, which is what I was looking for. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Great local feel, old style local pub, not pretentious. Bangers and mash was delicious.

Had the $12 steak for lunch and I was very impressed, as I only had half an hour for lunch it came out quickly. And this is during lunch peak time. Staff were warm and friendly and the meal was amazing. Thank you guys and I'll definitely be back for my once a week lunchtime outing.

Rooms were good for the price. There's alot of stairs though to get to the rooms, so if you are disabled, you might have an issue. The beer was FANTASTIC, the food was good & the managers were AWESOME - Thanks Paul for all your help and putting the Cubs games on for us !!!

Our review is about the tavern (not the hotel). Well located small restaurant above the noisy bar makes you feel at home. If the weather allows it, take a table on the deck. The kilo of green-lip mussels, a local specialty, is a must! and the young waiters are welcoming and efficient.

It's in the center of Auckland, the rooms are small, but nice. In the ground floor there is a beergarden where you can drink one beer before sleeping. The owner is nice and he offert us a drink of welcome.

I travelled up to Auckland with my best friend for a concert. We chose the Shakespeare Hotel as it was extremely cheap, and we were pleasantly surprised at how great the hotel was for the price. We came up on the weekend of Oktoberfest, and we expected things to get very loud but we couldn't hear a thing from the...

Small restaurant above the noisy bar. Good food, good prices (for New Zealand), good service. Nice, cozy atmosphere. Try the kilo of green-lip mussels, a local specialty. Others in our party tried lamb/mint bangers and mash, beef stout pie and bbq ribs. All good and nicely presented--and plentiful!

We checked in for two nights. It's was cheap and easy to find. The bar is average size and could be a little cramped if too many people came in. Our room was on the top floor which was five flights of stairs up. There is no elevator which I was disappointed about as it wasn't much fun carrying your...

The hotel is very central to all of the bars and restaurants of Auckland however the rooms are very small. The rooms are clean and tired however they do have everything you could need, just no space to put your luggage or a wardrobe. Therefore if you're staying for just a couple of nights it's fine but I think for...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
