The building is as art deco as it gets, both outside and inside. We stayed in an en-suite room, which for the price was very spacious - including a generous cupboard for luggage if staying for a few days. The room was clean; however, the bathroom did smell slightly, although this appeared to be more drainage issues than inadequate cleaning....

I loved the building with its unique style and atmosphere. And my single room was an actual room, with a closet and running water - unlike most other backpackers lodges where a single room is no more than a dorm bed with cardboard walls around it. Also the location on Emerson Street is fantastic. Free Wifi, also a plus. Lesser...

I stayed in an ensuite room but left with bites all over my body. Hostel caters to seasonal workers and is nto clean. The continental breakfast consists of white bread, jam and instant coffe or tea. Location is convenient but that;s about all the good I can say

I stayed there for one night only but it's one of the best backpackers i've ever stayed in. It kinda feels like a home away from home. The lounge is huge and has more of a living room feel to it. Kaye, the owner, is very friendly and helpful. All shared facilities are very clean and the beds are simply...

My boyfriend and I had a great stay at this backpackers! The location was perfect, right in the centre of the town so we could walk everywhere. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly - they made sure we had everything we needed and were always about if we needed advice. The hostel was extremely clean and had great facilities...

One of the best hostels I've stayed in in New Zealand, and I've stayed at lots! This hostel is one of a kind, perfect location is the centre of everything, the rooms were lovely and spacious, enough plug sockets etc which is something I find there's never enough of, and huge lockers in the rooms. Although just one level the...

Really lovely and accomodating place. I came in on a last bus at quater past 10 and the doors were open with staff waiting for me. Interior is really charming art deco considering it was rebuilt after a fire. There's a pool table, a couple of TV's, huge dining area and a decent kitchen. Rooms are pretty nice, each has...

I was really impressed with Criterion, our group arrived at 1.30 am and the owner was waiting up just to let us in. We stayed in a 10 person dorm, and it was very comfortable, with linen provided. Bathrooms were clean and tidy, and breakfast is served until 9.30 each day.

Me and several friends had a enjoyable stay at the Criterion Art Deco last weekend. The place was clean and well maintained with very friendly staff and dog. It's a short walk to the beach and some nice local restaurants and pubs.

Stayed a few nights here and overall was happy with the experience. Considering the price, age of the place and location (central Napier) it is ok. I expected a cheap backpackers and that is what I got. The building is old, however the rooms and shared facilities are clean enough. Had a double room - which had a small sink,...
