We stayed at the Te Pania as Cyclone Gabrielle was having her way with the coast of North Island New Zealand. While we were there, the cyclone hit and we also had an earthquake. We were without electricity for most of our stay, but the hotel went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of. Being on one of the top floors meant that we didn't have to worry about getting our steps in as we made numerous journeys up and down the stairs. We felt safe throughout the experience and they made sure that we were well fed as well. To be honest, the hotel is somewhat dated, but the views are spectacular and the hotel is well run with some of the best staff we have ever experienced! We would come back in a heartbeat!
The hotel was in a good location in Napier, had good parking and good sized rooms with views onto the seafront. Staff were friendly and helpful . While we were staying there a cyclone hit , the town was cut off and the power supply was cut. We were really impressed with how the staff team coped with a really difficult situation. We , and many others, suddenly had to stay an extra two nights at the hotel during which time the staff managed to keep us informed of what was happening, which places had internet access and were able to offer meals to everyone . They made a stressful situation much easier than it might have been and worked incredibly hard to accommodate everyone. Quite an achievement when they had no electricity and had to revert to doing admin on paper. What a tremendous team effort. Thank you so much.…
We arrived here for 2 nights the afternoon before the cyclone hit Napier . Lovely hotel and room and great views . Had to eat in the hotel first night as town had shut down and the meal was very good. The next day with no power, internet, and all roads out of Napier flooded or washed away the hotel staff did an amazing job of looking after us and all the guests who were stuck there , with very little news themselves of what was happening . They provided meals with dwindling supplies and did not hike the prices up . They were also very relaxed about whether we needed our room for extra nights given that we couldn’t drive anywhere. Thank you for your understanding. I’m sorry that we didn’t get to see the local wine region
My wife and I returned to this hotel, where we first stayed 3 years ago, we booked one of the wheelchair accessible rooms. All of which are located on the ground floor, it is a shame they can’t provide a choice of accessible rooms on the higher level with sea views. The bathroom in the room we stayed in could do with a refit as things are looking a little dated. Overall this is a good hotel for people needing wheelchair accessible accommodation as it’s location is excellent.
I stayed there during the recent cyclone. The service & care from the staff was exceptional during what was an extremely challenging time. Two of the Chef's even let me use their phones whilst mine was not working. The team kept all guests informed, fed & rooms clean. I look forward to my next visit.
The hotel blends in well with Art Deco and is right by the ocean so if you are at the front of the hotel you get a sea view. The room was really comfortable with a table and a couple of chairs also in an Art Deco style. It is easy to walk from there into the town. When we arrived there was no parking space and one of the staff moved his car so we could park there. We got lots of information on where to eat if we did not want our evening meal in the hotel. Breakfast was excellent.
We were on a group tour of New Zealand spending one night in the Scenic hotel Napier. Unfortunately that was the night of Cyclone Gabrielle. We were therefore trapped in Napier for a further 3 nights before we could fly out. We stayed on at the Scenic as other guests had cancelled. The hotel and its staff were unbelievable. Without power and using gas, a small generator and head torches staff prepared excellent meals for us 3 times a day from their dwindling food supply and kept the bar open. They were also unfailingly cheerful and polite. As if that was not enough when our airport transfer failed to turn the manageress and staff drove us in their own cars to the airport. We will never get better service- ever ! A top review is insufficient reward. I hope their owners and the City formally recognise how the hotel and staff went well above and beyond what they needed to do even in the exceptional circumstances. It is impossible to thank them enough and I hope this conveys exactly how much I and the other guests will always be in their debt and will never forget their kindness and the service they gave despite the difficult circumstances for both the hotel and the staff personally.…
This hotel has a lovely design with all the rooms having a sea view. The location is also great being at the end of the beach and near the main street. The staff were all very helpful. We had continental breakfast and an evening meal which was well presented and delicious. The room was very comfortable but the bathrooms could do with updating.
We really enjoyed our stay here, has a nice modern feel.... I think the receptionist mentioned the hotel was 20years old & the rooms are re-painted each winter, nice and clean. Excellent location, I had never properly experienced Napier central before, so to soon learn once we went for a walk in the city centre, that we were right in the city centre, I was very impressed. We were also blessed with beautiful weather, when we stayed so although we couldn't see the seaview from our 3rd floor room, we didn't mind at all. It was still so nice to wake up in beautiful Napier from our nice accommodating room at the scenic hotel te pania ( I am guessing it is named this because the te pania statue is situated across the road, in front of the hotel 😊)
Rooms were excellent, the receptionist when we arrived was very helpful and made the checking in process excellent. The rooms wert serviced each day by a very efficient team. We did not use the restaurant as our stay was organised to dine out at our favourite restaurants.
