Anyone wanting to chill out for a few days should head down State Highway 1 and stop off at Waitahanui Lodge, just on the outskirts of Lake Taupo. We stayed in Lodge 4, situated right on the beach just yards from the water. The property comprises of a bathroom, bedroom (really comfy bed) and living room with fully equipped kitchen...

We stayed for a couple of nights on our way back to Auckland and found our host and the lakeside cabin to be simply perfect. A beautiful place that escape the hubbub of Taupo, row on the lake and watch the sun go down. Very well equipped cabin, a real gem.

Always a lovely welcome from Sue and the little cabins are fantastic. So clean and with sparkling white bed linen plus everything you could possibly need. Views are fantastic too. Just love the Lodge.

We had an excellent two night stay at the Lodge. What an amazing location it is! Sue is an incredible manager, and really made our stay. The location is great, but due to the proximity to the main road and lake, not ideal for small children, but the x3 12 year olds loved it! We also had a Labrador in...

This lodge is truly lovely! Would highly recommend as a place to enjoy a little more quiet time than in central Taupo, whilst still being close enough to all the attractions. The place is well kept and cosy with everything you could need. We got a warm welcome and felt instantly relaxed and at home. Didn't want to leave! Free...

A wonderful find. Quiet, secluded and the cutest cottage by the lake. I'm lying in bed watching the lake as I type. The cottage although an older style is impeccably clean with snowy white sheets and towels. The cottage is modest but has everything you could want for a weeks stay. The attention to detail is what makes this accomodation...

Thanks Sue, what a beautiful lakeside setting to sit on the deck with Chardonnay in hand and enjoy watching the many moods of the lake. Even enjoyed a refreshing dip in it. On this occasion we only stayed overnight to break our journey as our destination was further north, but I couldn't imagine a better place to stop. Waitahanui is...

Such a unique place you have here, Sue! And, even though the gale force winds and rain blowing across the lake thwarted the fishing plans, the storm watch we enjoyed from our lakeside windows more than made up for it. A wonderful little gem of a resort.

Thankyou so much Sheri. Yes the weather was pretty rough while you were here so I'm glad your stay was memorable. Pity about the fishing though. I hope you had more luck in your next stop.

I just keep coming back to soak up the view, relax and enjoy this wonderful spot. Sue is a wonderful host and the rooms are always immaculate, with lovely gardens. The sunsets are beautiful, the clouds and Lake Taupo are on our doorstep to see the ever changing mood.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Waitahanui Lodge is all about the kiwi bach experience. The original lodge was built in 1932 as a fishing lodge that by today's standards would have been fairly basic. In the 1950's a new lodge was built right by the lake's edge and close to the world renowned Waitahanui River. With renovations and upgrading the Lodge has up to date facilities and caters for today's travellers, yet the "kiwiana soul" of the Lodge remains. The lodge consists of 5 well equipped, self catering cottages, accommodating up to 5 guests. All linen is supplied. Absolute lakefront location can be enjoyed from two of our cottages while the others are just a few steps away. Our wonderful lakeside terrace provides the perfect spot for a barbecue or simply to enjoy a great sunset. Our on site tackle shop has waders and rods for hire plus all the fishing tackle needed to fish our local rivers for trout. ... more   less
