Lovely place to stay. Friendly people clean and very warm. With a beautiful dog (Jess) greeting you arrival. Stayed there before and differently return! Right in town so easy to get around with a dairy across the road.

The staff was very helpful and sincere, helping us for nearly 1h to try and secure us a place to stay for the night when everything was booked and all hope seemed out. Thank you, will defo recommend this as the preferable place to stay if your nearby this beautiful area of NZ.

Not a problem guys, I'm glad I could be of help to you, and I hope the other hostel out of town that we eventually got you into was just as good as your stay at Rainbow! Safe travels!

I had a great time here (despite the wifi being not so great) 5 bed room had really comfy beds and a nice bathroom. Everything in the kitchen was thoroughly cleaned and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The Hostel Dog was just a bonus :) Definitely worth staying here as a backpacker as for a low price you...

We just stayed here 2 nights to be able to do the tongarrio crossing. Was hard to get a good night sleep beforehand because our room was right next to the common room and with paper thin walls, a few drunk people and noise violations not enforced it was difficult. Good to have free wifi and a large common area...

It is a really nice hostel with a good vibe and very familiar. You can easily connect with people and also write something on the notice board. The staff is friendly you get bisects, coffee with milk and tea for free as well spices. Really go here it is a really nice place!

Overall a pleasant experience. The kitchen was loaded with all the goods (utinsils, pots, pans, tons of free spices, hot water). Plenty of refrigerator space. Busy kitchen, plenty of seating. The whole place itself is out dated, needs a face lift. Carpets couches wallpaper etc can be replaced. They have a sauna but smelled a bit funky (I mean saunas...

We had a good stay at Rainbow Lodge but nothing special. Checked in at 12.30 and got a wifi code which was temperamental and slow and also had 0 connection from our room which wasn't great. The rooms were small and compact. We had a 'luxury' 6 bed dorm which just included a shower. Don't even think one person could...

Part of attending the summer concert series for us is finding good quality budget accommodation within walking distance of the venue . The rainbow lodge ticks all those boxes. Clean warm quiet. Comfortable beds. We had an ensuite but friends had shared facilities and said they were great. Huge communal kitchen dining area. Lots if outside seating places. Staff were...

A very cosy and personal hostel with great helpful staff. They provide a free ride to the bus which we really appreciated. The bed though were horrible and the sheets felt dirty. A lot of interesting guests...

We stayed there for one night only, but it was enough to realize how good it was. Location is excellent - very close to the lake itself and to the city centre. It was great to leave our car and just walk around. Room and bathroom were very clean, bed was comfortable, A pleasant surprise were TV and hairdrier. The...

Hi and welcome to Taupo's original and favourite backpackers. Rainbow lodge was purpose built and designed for the needs of travellers by Mark Dumble (fishing expert??) and Sue Mrozinski themselves seasoned travellers. They had spent several years on the world's highways and by-ways and having accommodation experiences that are sometimes described as "Character Building" they settled in Taupo famous for its Rainbow Trout and beautiful scenery. Having had my own character building experiences I came to rest at Rainbow lodge and worked closely with them for a year before they handed me the reigns. Ross ... more   less
