Christchurch is a long way from the Mediterranean - nevertheless, the opulence of an Italian High Renaissance Palazzo awaits you at the Heritage Christchurch. Designed by Joseph Clark Maddison and opened in 1913, the hotel is listed as a category one building on the Historic Places Trust Register, reflecting its status as a building of national significance. The hotel's grand design is fitting: after all, Christchurch is regarded as the Garden City, and is regarded internationally for its culture and refinement.

We were a little concerned by the apparent lack of security measures - it would seem that anyone can just wander into the hotel from the busy streets below, or from the attached restaurant/bar. Also concerning was the lack of displayed evacuation/safety information in the room. This is a very regal looking building, standing closely amidst several still to be demolished tall structures the earthquakes have left behind. A little unnerving to look out the windows to this particular vista though. While the beautiful wide hallways and impressive stairway, along with very generously sized suites are brilliant, they still couldn’t hide the fact that this facility is tired. Shame to find on our arrival that some of the hooks in the lounge drapes were missing - didn’t help the tired decor look. Clean, and the beds were divinely comfortable, and did I mention the size of the suites? Fantastic. No room service unfortunately. Staff were very pleasant and so obliging.

We are not familiar with the area and we had difficulty locating the hotel, going around in circles until we phoned the duty manager to find it is in the old Government Building and the car could be parked out the front for unloading. The duty manager was so helpful with parking and checking us in and out. The building is beautiful, our suite on the first floor furnished lovely. The room was very warm and stuffy, the windows do not open and there is no air-con. - you get a ceiling fan for downstairs and an electric pedestal fan in the bedroom. The staircase was quite steep up to the bedroom so we left our bags downstairs where there was more room. The bathroom (upstairs) was very small, out of character with the floor area downstairs. There was disturbance often during the night from heavy footsteps in a room above. We have decided to stay elsewhere on our return to the city.

Dear GnAW480, Thank you for taking the time to place feedback on TripAdvisor subsequent to your recent stay. It is wonderful to know that you found our staff helpful. We are very happy that our Front Office staff were able to help you locate the Old Government Building, which is a Category 1 building and is on Historic Places Trust list, limiting us in what we can install in the rooms, and that unfortunately includes air conditioning - we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We list all out amenities and facilities on all sites, which also states that these are 2-storey Suites. Once again I would like to thank you for your feedback. Kind Regards, Astrid Mc Gowan

The room…sorry suite….was amazing, more than you could possibly wish for. Very central. Very clean, the room was huge and so was upstairs, the bedroom, bathroom and dressing area with wardrobes. King bed, very comfortable indeed. Also washing machine and tumble dryer. The gym looked very well equipped but did not use it but used the spa to rest those aching joints after a full days walking. We are back again tomorrow after a long South Island trip!

I absolutely love this hotel. The staff were extremely kind and professional in their dealings. (Thanks Sheila for the recommendation to have breakfast in the nearby Main Library - absolutely excellent!) It's a beautiful old building, which was a pleasure to stay in. Our room was lovely and well appointed. For what we received, the cost of the stay was extremely reasonable I understand that retrofitting air-conditioning into an historic building is extremely difficult, but even in its absence I'd still give the hotel a Five-Star rating. Thanks

We recently stayed here for two nights in the two bedroom suites which are perfect for a family as there is also a kitchen, living area and laundry in the second bathroom. Apartment was spotless and location was so close to both attractions and shopping. Loved the pool and facilities as well.

We booked into the Heritage after spending a week in a DOC hut for a climbing trip. There were three of us so opted for a two bedroom apartment and it was perfect. The beds were squishy, I had my own shower and there was a bathtub to soak all of our tired muscles after a week of hiking and rock climbing, which is quite hard to find these days. The staff were all amazing - the only downside was that we found reception quite hard to find as there was no clear signage.

The location is perfect for exploring the City loved hearing the morning tram roll past. Had a beautiful breakfast at the library cafe up the street which was a great recommendation from reception staff. Will be back.

I booked 14 rooms at The Heritage for two nights for a group travelling on the Tranzalpine. A mix of one bedroom and two bedroom suites. The hotel is just so spacious with lovely character features, wide hallways and stairs, and oversized doors to each suite. Each suite has a high ceiling with bedrooms on mezzanine floor, and bi-folds on some rooms overlooking living room area. Extra large windows. Large comfortable beds. Full kitchen, dining and living room. Staff were very helpful and friendly. There is also a bar located on the ground floor that does superb cocktails. The hotel does not offer breakfast, but we arranged breakfast at The Distinction next door.

We have just booked our third trip back to this hotel. Can recommend for families. The two bedroom suite is perfect size for a family and has all the amenities you need for a great stay. The kitchen is great, dining area and and second bathroom. The kids loved the pool and spa / although some very grumpy health club members weren’t happy we turned up and even told another lady off for being in the pool while she was swimming laps. The receptionist remembered me by name, which was lovely. As a platinum Accor member I often stay there as we get free breakfast, upgrades ect but I love the Heritage for when travelling with my kids. There is a couple of small issues one is I just rebooked via reception and she gave me a higher rate than I could book online. When questioned she denied that so I’ve gone ahead and booked online. Perhaps a bit of FO training is required there. The other small issue we went down to pool without key and the housekeeping staff wouldn’t let us in (even when obvious we were guests with robes on ect) so we had to run up 2 flights of stairs to grab key. I think perhaps they could be able to use their discretion a bit.
