I've stayed here a a few times now, it's such a lovely spot with an awesome location. Always want to stay longer, it's very comfortable and has a great atmosphere. The staff are fantastic too, they went above and beyond to make sure we had a great stay!

Perks: hot tub, sauna, good atmosphere (not a party hostel for the most part) and towels, car sale board, and free stuff. Not the most convenient location to the city- be prepared to walk awhile or take some buses. Although we had a great time exploring Christchurch! What a lovely city with great art and culture. I’d say the cost was a bit high for what it is. Private room was nice- however- I would say the mattresses are due for a renewal. Ouch. Hard and pointy. Plus the walls are thin as paper so not much privacy with your neighbors. I think the biggest thing was the inconsistency of the staff. Some were clearly in training, which I completely understand, but please don’t make things up when you have no clue and give incorrect and confusing information. I was quoted several different room prices from staff members and never the amount listed on their own website- often off by 10-30 NZ dollars.

I have to begin by saying I’m no longer a backpacker hostel person and came here because other accommodation fell through at the very last minute. I thought the double room was expensive at $122 per night. However, the service was absolutely outstanding and every member of the team made sure that they did things to help me out. My room was quiet, the place operates on a culture of respect, there is a focus on sustainability and the gardens are lovely for just sitting.Free tea and coffee is provided in the kitchen. I’m hugely grateful to the team for their friendly and obliging service. Thanks so much.

The place does not feel clean. It seems that kitchen and bathrooms did not have a big, deep clean for a while. The beds are also not very comfortable as you can feel the springs inside the mattress. A few people live in the hostel, fact that maybe doesn't give a fresh look to it.

We were only here for one night but would have loved to stay longer! Max the dog is VERY cute and the staff aren’t bad either 😉. Definitely would visit again, seems like a well run hostel with great amenities and very close to the city.

I stayed at the Old Country house Backpackers for just one night so I could go out for dinner without needing to drive back to Hanmer afterwards. Honestly it rivaled any YHA I've ever stayed at! Very good value, don't think I've ever stayed the night somewhere for just $22. Quiet, bathroom & kitchen facilities were as good as you could want, free tea & coffee in the morning, and good yarns with the guys working there. Close to anything you could want in town, would definitely stay again.

My friends and I stayed at The Old Countryhouse for two nights and we’re pleasantly surprised, the reception staff we so friendly and helpful they gave us loads of recommendations and genuinely seemed interested in us having a great time in Christchurch. The dorm rooms were cosy and warm and had lots of room, the whole place had a really relaxed feel to it and you are just left to do what you want which makes a change from a lot of hostels!

We were really happy about this accommodation where we booked a private dormitory for the 5 of us until someone came into our bedroom, went through all our bags and stole some of our stuff during the day while we were not at the hostel. When we asked what happened at the reception, they checked on their cameras and realized that their cleaners « forgot » to lock our door and an homeless guy came into our bedroom and stole our stuff. They didn’t seem surprised and knew this homeless guy as it’s not the first time that happened to them. When we discussed that with the owner, he didn’t feel sorry for us and didn’t acknowledge their responsibility in this incident ( their cleaners forgot to lock our door and left it open !! ). As compensation, the owner gave us the cleaner’s bond ... that’s it ! what a nice gesture for a group of friends who have been stolen and felt unsafe after that !
