I spent two nights at Chalet Backpackers. It is located on a steep road only a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. The historic brick building was nicely restored in great parts but has still kept some of the atmosphere of “the old days”. From the common rooms there are great views over the city and the harbour. I...

We stayed for 2 nights. The rooms were spacious with high ceilings which was very nice but made them cold even in December. Our heater didn't work, but we managed with layers and the blankets. The wifi worked well and the staff was so friendly; one girl even let me use her cellphone to call my next hostel. I would...

We really had a lovely time when staying at the Chalet Backpackers. The old converted hospital has a lot of charm and the staff is very caring and attentive. We also loved that the kitchen was very well equipped, with even a fresh herbs garden. Free Unlimited WiFi and Pool table were just the cherry on top of the sunday!

The new owners are doing a great job. The place is beautiful, the dorm beds are really confortable and the staff is lovelly. I stayed for 2 nights, they were still figuring out the heating but the receptionist provided me a heater for the room. The place is also very clean and have really good Wi-Fi, seriously, internet was great.

We immediately felt at home thanks to the warm welcome we had by the owner. It's a beautiful old building, very well maintained. There's a big sign with "backpackers" on the side, but it totally didn't feel like a backpackers. So I loved it even more. Very spacious kitchen with literally everything you need, even a scale! Nice little garden...

Spent 3 days in this lovely old hostel. The Manager and her daughter we charming and very informative. We had a double room which was clean and quiet. There was lots of room for making meals in the kitchen and eating in the dining room. I was really impressed at how quiet it was at night, even with people coming...

This place is freezing cold. Lots of charm though. The owner is a bit eccentric, but full of great information. Nice kitchen. The rooms and bathrooms were clean as well. I wouldn't stay here again in the winter as it was just TOO cold.

The room was a good size and facilities were generally good but unfortunately there was no heating except for a small bar heater to our room which didn't cope with the high ceilings. The place was virtually empty so I can understand why they don't want to rack up big heating bills but then the coldness would keep you away...

We enjoyed our stay at Chalet in March 2014. We were appreciative of the staff who stayed late to accommodate our later arrival. It is a very neat old building and each room is uniquely decorated. The kitchen was nice and we also liked the large dining room. We had a room in the front (street side) and the traffic...

This is a very nice old building with comfortable high-ceilinged rooms and clean communal areas. The kitchen in particular was very good and the staff very friendly. As usual in New Zealand, wifi was very slow and expensive and bordered on the unusable most of the time (run by an external company bent on gouging backpackers). We stayed in a...
