From the moment you are greeted at the meeting point, right near the ferry, you will be charmed by the friendliness of the local people. We were taken on a short orientation drive so we would be able to find whatever we needed. In fact Kaka Retreat is just up the hill from the ferry terminal but you don't have to cary your bags they load them in the van, you are close to the shops, the pub and just about everywhere you want to walk. The accommodation is extremely clean, tidy and has good cooking facilities with a well equipped kitchen. We shared a two bed apartment with friends, 1 Dbl 1 twin and had a living room with two sofas, a dining table for four, bbq on our porch, a large bathroom with lots of fluffy towels so it was perfect. Next door is a smokehouse where you can buy local salmon and free range eggs (be quick in the morning or you might miss out), just help yourself and leave the money in the honesty box, lovely. We stayed here for two nights and really enjoyed the visits from the kaka. We did not feed them at all but they were very playful evening landing on my husbands arm. They scamper around the deck, watch you eating inside and land at the kitchen window if you are doing the dishes. We also had a tui and a kereru as well on our last morning so if you want to experience the native birds this is a good choice. Thanks for a marvellous stay and we hope to come again.

I have stayed here twice. It's very beautiful there. The host are the best and will accommodate any request. The bed is very comfortable and the view is amazing. The host will pick you up at the ferry dock or the airport. They have washers and dryers to use for a small fee. They can recommend many different activities. Easy walking to the central business district, where there is a grocery store and restaurants. Highly recommend renting an electric powered bicycle. The hills are very steep and it helps to have electric power (by battery). I have been to New Zealand four times, and I have been everywhere. Both islands, North and South. Both coast of both islands, all the way north to Cape Reinga. Stewart Island is the best place to visit. Very highly recommend!

The Kaka Retreat web site says it is not uncommon to see visiting kaka. And I had one visit my front porch! Don’t feed them however as they are known to destroy furniture should they not receive food. The two bedroomed unit was spacious and very warm. My only improvements would be a bigger shower (again, this one was so small it was hard to wash my hair), oven facilities, and better (light blocking) blinds. But these are suggestions rather than necessities. The location close to town means you can easily get meals from the South Seas Hotel. Diane and Wayne, the hosts, made sure I was well looked after and even dropped me off to the Ulva Island water taxi wharf so I did not need to walk 20 minutes over the hill on a cold morning.

We are just back from 3 nights at Kaka retreat and we will certainly be back for another visit. The units are very modern, spacious and absolutely spotless. I think what made the difference here were the thoughtful little extra touches, such as the rack of umbrellas by reception and the night light strips on the stairs to the unit. The small outdoor space at the front was a real bonus as a place to relax and read. As we booked directly we had a continental breakfast each morning, which was great to get us going for the day. The cheerful and welcoming hosts will pick you up and drop you off to ferry/flight. The units are fully serviced, although you can choose not to have a service if you wish, we chose not to as we had more than enough fresh towels, etc to keep us going. There was an outdoor BBQ to use, which again, was spotless. We didn't use it, but enjoyed chatting to our unit neighbours as they cooked their dinner. There is everything you need for self-catering, but we were happy to take the 4 min walk to the pub for dinner. The location is fabulous and super quiet. The real treat was being visited by the Kaka in the evening, they are not shy and come up close! I have stayed at a lot of motels across NZ and this is absolutely one of the best - I could have stayed here happily for a couple of weeks.

We spent 3 nights at the Kaka Retreat on a recent trip to Stewart Island – loved it. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away to our accommodation and quickly checked in – very efficient. The location is great, less than 5 minute walk into the town center (4-square, restaurant, cafes, etc). There were a number of kakas flying around, but none came to visit us. Also saw lots of other native birds – beautiful bird song here!! The room was very nice, one of a group of 3 motel type rooms, all with spacious verandas. We made use of the small kitchenette to prepare some basic meals and enjoyed the TV (3 or 4 channels) and the free wifi internet. The heater, a definite requirement during our stay, worked well in keeping the room at a suitable temperature. The shower and hot water were very good and the bed was nice and comfortable. Overall we had a great stay here and would definitely recommend it to other travelers.

We stayed four nights at the Kaka Retreat. We were a bit worried as we had a studio unit for my teenage son, my partner and myself. We needn't have been, while cozy we had plenty of room and the verandah meant we could spread out a little.

The accommodation we clean, well presented and supported by on site staff. Because we booked direct we received a complimentary basic breakfast which was very useful to help us keep costs down and fill us up in the morning. The location is great, just up the hill from the settlement, an easyish walk (a little harder on the way home up hill).

They picked and dropped us from the ferry which made organizing travel on the island that much easier as we had no car.

If you get a chance stay - and look out for the friendly Kaka who visits often.

A fantastic, modern motel set in the rainforest with a one minute walk into town. We enjoyed our time staying here. The room also has a BBQ available. This is handy as there is only one restaurant in town and a fish and chip shop. The room had a small kitchen with a microwave and fridge, with tea and coffee making facilities. The beds were super comfortable.

We were so close to town and had a beautiful room with very comfortable beds, plenty of light inside the room and a nice kitchen with milk already in the refrigerator. The rooms were large and at night could hear lots of kiki's running around.

We even had a local bird visit us daily.

Stewart Island was our last destination on our 8 week trip to New Zealand...and we saved the best 'til last! Kaka Retreat was well positioned just a short walk (uphill!) from the ferry terminal, grocery store and eating places. The friendly owners offered lifts to and from the ferry terminal and airline check-in office if desired. Our studio unit was spacious and clean. Good size bathroom with nice toiletries and adequate kitchen area too. Nice balcony to sit out on and to interact with the friendly Kaka!

Hi Sue We did respond to your enquiry on behalf of the 6 persons which was made 17 October 2016 via our own web contact us page - ref 1990. I realise this is very old but it appears that a response is required to deactivate the question recurring via theTrip Advisor page. :) With luck you did visit Stewart Island in 2017 and found it to be a beautiful place.
