Stopped here for 2 nights whilst on road to Milford Sound. Hostel is pristine, clean with well equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, and wood fire. Owner is friendly and knowledgable about local hikes etc. Hostel is next to a field full of llamas which proved a point of interest. It is out of town, therefore a car is desirable.

Amazing place! Good view, good facilities, and very very clean ! Good company too! The owners Bob and Maxine are lovely! You can use so many free stuff like laundry machine, nice and clean kitchen, amazing living-room and a warming fire place :) Make sure you're not smoking in their property, drinking is more than OK :)

This backpackers is exceptional in the sense that it doesn't feel like a typical backpackers. It's cozy, comfortable and the general atmosphere is peaceful. This is by far the best backpackers I have been to! The place is extremely clean, there are plenty of couches to lazy around on, the beds are very comfortable and the showers are amazing. Also...

We were made to feel welcome the minute we met Bob and Maxine, from the greeting to the farewell. We were very lucky to get 2 nights at this spotlessly clean venue filled with travellers from all over the world and various ages. All of whom raved about this "backpackers" Close enough to walk to the nearby lake for an...

Charming place to recuperate from day trips, hikes, and water activities in Fiordland. The lounge is so cozy and inviting, a perfect place to linger and watch the sunset, chat by the fire, curl up with a book -- we didn't want to leave. Loving attention to detail in everything here. Free washing machine and superior kitchen. Only complaint are...

I can see why people have had issues with Bob and Maxine, however I personally found them to be quite charming and enjoyed their abrupt quirkiness! The hostel is kept to outstanding cleanliness - the bathrooms and kitchen were absolutely spotless (bob is very specific about what to do to keep them this way and I fully agree with the...

I spent a really nice and quiet week at Bob&Maxines, a really cosy and spacious hostel. It was very clean and a familiar place. I could imagine that they are very busy in summer, but in winter it is defenitely the best place if you need some time to calm down. I would love to be back again
