Needing a place to stay in Tea Anau enroute to Milford Sound, we decided to check out Bob & Maxine's. Their hostel is listed in BBH, a directory of NZ hostels. Before our arrival, I corresponded with Bob about availability and he was very responsive. On arrival, we discovered a large property with stunning views of the mountains and the...

We decided to give this backpackers a try after the good reviews we had seen. We checked that it was open as we were aware it was nearly out of seasons. We arrived at 18:00hrs and before we had even pulled the car up on to the drive 'Maxine' came out and said 'can you not read... The sign says...

We had the FULL sign up for a very good reason; I was in hospital! These people failed to see the very obvious sign & came in anyway. Maxine explained in a calm & rational way that we were closed for a night or two. They left. I'm at a loss to explain their weird bizarre reason for attempting pay...

This hostel is a little away from the lake, but with a nice farm view that you won't want to missed. Bob have maintained the hostel very well, keep checking on everything to ensure all in good shape. It is too clean and comfortable to be call a backpackers hostel, I would rate this as a homestay instead. You seldom...

New Zealand is full of great hostels, but Bob and Maxine's place stands above almost everywhere else that I've seen. As in many areas of life, small details set certain places apart from others, and Bob and Maxine have overlooked no small detail is crafting a simply excellent place to spend a night (or two weeks), as I did in...

I really enjoyed my stay at this hostel. It is small and it is more like in a Family, than a hostel. The Kitchen was VERY clean, and there were also different fruits for free. The livingroom is Perfect for relaxing After a Day of hiking. It is Not directly in the Center or on the lake, but you get...

We found Bob and Maxine's Backpackers to be clean, spacious, well-designed, reasonably priced, and restful. The common living/family room was huge, with small clusters of seating that allowed and encouraged conversations among international travelers. This space was decorated with a variety of country flags and useful local and regional maps. The kitchen was well-equipped and clean. All areas, including bathrooms,...

It's a really nice experience to stay! Me and my husband are not hostels lovers but would like to try living in one of those after seeing plenty of positive comments about Bob and Maxine's Backpacker; and they didn't let me down. Bob and Maxine are super nice, Bob is very funny. We were staying at the twin ensuit room...

We stayed in the house, where Bob and Maxine are living, because the bachpacker's house was full. We shared the bathroom with one other room and our bed was very comfortable. Everything is impecably clean, because the owners take a lot of care and put a lot of work into everything. The kitchen is very well equipped and they light...

Thanks for the great review guys. Towards the end of the season we need some positive feedback. To respond to the issue of there being no hot water: The hot water comes from two gas califonts powered by two huge LPG tanks. What happened on Monday night is one of the guests was fiddling around with the cylinder's getting the...
