The Thorold Country House is only an easy 1.5hr drive from NZ international airport and is very welcome after a long flight from Hong Kong. The hosts Wendy and Gary were very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. They are very knowledgable about the area and gave us some useful local info. We stayed in the cottage which consists...

Upon reading the review posted by 4oystercatcher, we feel compelled to right a wrong. A wrong perception, that is.Our family has been holidaying at Thorold Country House for 3 years now, the same time each year. From the beginning we have never been disappointed, it is a break away we look forward to every year for various reasons. Wendy and...

We were grateful to be allowed early check in after arriving in NZ just that day it was quite kind. The place is in a lovely setting but you can hear road noises from the road below and the pool although relaxing to look at is nothing I'd want to swim in. It was unheated and not very clean. The...

A very nice experience. One of our highlights was feeding the sheep one evening with Gary and hearing his stories about how they were named. My only complaint is not having a coffee pot in the room - but even that was taken care of by Gary. He made sure we had plenty of coffee. The house is in a...

THOROLD COUNTRY HOUSE—THAMES, NZ The setting and generous hospitality of our hosts, Wendy and Gary, far exceeded our expectations. The area surrounding the house is beautiful, and our accommodations were spacious, tastefully decorated and very comfortable with a private entrance. Our delicious breakfasts were served in a delightful garden. Our host, knowing of our interest in farming and of our...

I have stayed in several B&B's in New Zealand on various visits but nothing compares with the wonderful hospitality offered by Wendy and Gary at Thorold House near Thames. Unfortunately we were only able to spend 4 nights here at the end of our trip but wished we could have stayed for ever ! Wendy's home made marmalade is absolutely...

I loved everything about Thorold House! The hosts Wendy and Gary were so welcoming right from the start and helped make our stay so special. The breakfasts were one of the best I have ever had and having it served in the beautiful garden by the pool all added to the experience! The accommodation was very clean and the setting...

Really enjoyed my stay here, Thames served as a great place to base ourselves when exploring the North Island, being close to both Auckland and the Coromandel was a real bonus; not to mention the scenic coastal roads near by. Fantastic grounds at Thorold and welcoming locals in Thames, which was also full of great places to eat and shop!...

We all loved this place. It was fun to look at the sheep and cows; Gary let my son help feed them in the morning. We adored the pool, which is in an absolutely lovely setting and perfect for refreshing dips in evening and morning. Wendy and Gary are both friendly, helpful with tourist advice, very welcoming. Went out of...

We needed a bed and breakfast at the last minute in Thames. We were very short notice, but Wendy and Gary were extremely welcoming and had rooms ready. Wendy was delightful- we shared tea with her later that afternoon, and she was wonderful to talk to, as was Gary. Their property was lovely, and they open the grounds up to...
