This is an excellent waterfront venue for a drink in the late afternoon sun or for a lunch or dinner, the fish was fresh and the service excellent - you really feel like you have stepped back in time (in a good way) when you visit the Duke!

Fantastic food (we had lamb and the hapuka) both dishes cooked to perfection. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere and with a magnificent location this has got to be a must for anyone staying in the Bay of Islands. Room was comfy and spacious and clean. Staff great. Breakfast in the morning delicious.

Really friendly people welcomed us to this old-style hotel. You should try and get a room overlooking the water because the view is quite wonderful (less so, obviously, from the side rooms). Russell is a lovely little place, with hostelries lining the shore but not intrusively so, and we had a quiet lunch at different places on the two days...

On Wednesday of this week my husband and I had a business trip to Russell. We decided to stay at The Duke having only eaten there on earlier visits. We were shown to our room by a charming receptionist. This was small but perfectly formed (we knew this when we booked) as the hotel was full. After a busy day...

This is a wonderful old hotel that has not been renovated beyond recognition. It is still very authentic. If you are nostalgic or romantic this is the place for you. Not flash but very very welcoming. The restaurant is superb.....interesting menu and of best big city standards.

Our Easter break away was just perfect - awesome weather, awesome location. Hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. We ate at the restaurant one night, food was delicious (we had made sure we had a reservation earlier in the week as we knew it would be busy). The continental breakfast was adequate, cereals, toast, yoghurt, etc. A fresh fruit...
