Awesome place stayed for 3 nights. Had breakfast each morning. Virginia was the nicest person at the hotel, I could chat to her everyday - thank you for your warm and welcoming service. Great location right on the water. We ate at the restaurant twice, Dinner was lovely but the staff need to be more attentive and consistent with their... More

This lovely old building is at the heart of Russell's sea frontage. The building itself is is very attractive and full historical charm. The outside dining area is wonderful, the inside seating area is also good if you don't have a calm evening and the bar area is good for pre dinner drinks. The evening meal was very good. My only... The food is really good! Hats off to the chef although I'd love the manager to respond to this and explain why they would cut a eye fillet steak in half??? Even so I thought it was pretty good! But for $30 something dollars keep that bad boy in one piece! The setting is awesome and some people need to... More

Stayed one week in a front room overlooked the calm bay. All fresh and new with ensuite. Downstairs the restaurant, bar, sitting rooms are slightly faded Victorian decor. The front veranda offers terrific luncheon outdoor dining. Stay in Russell for quiet walks, catch the ferry to Paihia or drive down to the car ferry to get across the bay. We... More

Had a most delicious lunch for a group of 8. We all ordered different things and not one was disappointing. Seafood chowder was a highlight. Views from verandah were beautiful. Most pleasant afternoon was had by all.

Great location and the room overlooking the bay was clean but a little dated in its furnishings and fittings. The staff seemed generally indifferent with one exception. The restaurant dinner was average but the biggest joke is what The Russel calls its Continental breakfast, tea or coffee tinned pears, diy toast and juice and that's about it!, if you want... More

Arriving for our Honeymoon on New Year's Eve after a long flight and drive we were excited to arrive at The Duke having seen all it's hype. We had booked well in advance for the dinner and were looking forward to the New Years celebrations. Our room was dated and looked over the car park but it was clean and... More

The welcome of the staff, and how they look after you, is great. The place is very clean. The views for the terrace are wonderful. The location is very close to the ferry and therefore, the local holiday sights. The restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced. I strongly suggest the 6hr cooked lamb. They suggest for two but we stretched... More

We are so glad that our host at the Abilene Motel in Kerikeri recommended the Duke for lunch. After a short and pleasant boat ride to Russell from Paihia, The Duke was a very short walk from the pier. We sat in the outdoor (but enclosed) veranda and had a lovely view of the harbour. We shared two orders of... More
