From other reviews, realize that a villa would have avoided a lot of the issues. Starters - found a pair of SHOES in our room. Yes, right next to the window. Not belonging to us. Handed them over to the front desk who didn’t even ask what room we were in or offer an apology. Next up - our sheets were not clean and had a large tear. We asked for the bed to be changed and came back to our room, and no - bed was made but still had same sheets. The fridge was a block of ice and leaked water so we wasted a towel keeping it from flooding the floor. And the topper? The NOISE! It was prom weekend with proms both Sunday and Monday. We called security more than once. I took plenty of video but with a drinking age of 18… well … likely most seniors were of « legal » of age but it doesn’t make the parties and running up and down hallways ok. No apologies issued. None. If management would like to review videos, I’m happy to share but our travel companions on another floor experienced the same and also didn’t receive any apology so the hotel definitely knows the situation. I’ll post a photo of outside of our room as we left on Tuesday MORNING for the airport. You can imagine what the night was like. Pluses lots of entertainment and pool staff hustles!!! Fitness center had working equipment and was well appointed. Beach was clean and water and sunscreen was available every where. Location is great too

Beautiful hotel! We stayed in the pool villas and the room did not disappoint. They were just as pictured. Although i booked balcony i was given the terrace room and I had no complaints the terrace was huge. If you can upgrade your room to a villa it’s well worth the price! I was able to walk to the pools from our terrace. The service at the pool bar was a bit slow but i was in no rush anyways and the drinks were so good. The casino was very nice upgraded slot machines Roulette, craps and blackjack tables There’s a popular nightclub in the hotel so to get to the villas the hotel attendants make sure you’re staying in the hotel to proceed further into the resort to prevent those not staying to get towards the pool and villas area which is nice I was worried about some of the reviews left about the hotel but i honestly had a great experience. I’m pretty particular about the rooms being clean and as advertised and i honestly got more than what i expected Would i stay here again? Absolutely !

This is a tough review to do, because there were so many things right... and so many things utterly WRONG! It is as beautiful as ever, but a discerning eye can see some of the leftovers from Hurricane Maria, such as the bubbling wallpaper in the lobby bathroom as you enter to the grand ball room... or the decayed door frames... There are SERIOUS inconsistencies in customer service - from "malcriada/tudy" front desk staff, to other front desk staff or bell hops or parking staff or pool staff (Juan, Josue (?), Luis, the lovely bartender), Jessica (?) the manager, Yosue the super bartender and his rum knowledge - who simply excel at customer service -, the clean pools... the gym. But now enter the rooms... UG! When our travel agent made the reservation, there were no rooms to be had and he booked a "handicap" room. When we arrived and it was clear we were not special needs, the front desk asked if they could use the room, as they had a demand for this category of rooms, and of course we said "yes". Too early to check in, we dropped off the bags with the exquisite bell hops, and off we went galavanting until late. Upon arrival, they sent us to the Banyan Rooms, (112 to be exact), and they were delicious! (or so we thought): a charming cabana with private sunning balcony, a small sitting area, a welcome bag and water bottles, king size bed and a gorgeous sunk shower for 6 people (yea it was big). Missing were the wash cloths and not enough towels. The room felt humid, and yes heat had been scorching but we thought "eh, the ac can't keep up with the heat". That was an understatement. Uncomfortably hot (the room went up to 81 degrees - YES I CHECKED and I should have photographed it), we gave the room a chance. Night #2... more comfortable to sleep outside in the 80+ weather than the room. Engineering came and tried to reprogram the thermostat... no can do. So we switched rooms. To 113. Any better? NOPE, and to our horror, there was garbage in the corner that went without cleaning, the doors didn't shut unless you slammed them (housekeeping actually left our door WIDE OPEN which let the heat in with a vengeance). 1130 pm on our last night there, and they moved us... AGAIN. Comfortable beds, uncomfortable heat and humidity. I think the sauna would be cooler than the room. We asked for floor fans... THEY HAD NONE. Was the last room any "cooler" - kinda, it was sleepable. They comped the "hotel fees" with some apologies. Suffice to say, I loved the pool and the beach I grew up on. The rooms are so charming, and deceitfully ill prepared for guests. And that Front desk chick who "malcriada" told me SHE COULDNT MAKE CHANGE FOR TIPS - I wouldn't let her watch my dog. Nasty just doesn't suit a hotel where most of the staff is the saving grace to an establishment with history and character. On another note - there is live music, dancing, super expensive restaurants, boutiques, spa, starbucks, godivas. Enough to keep you busy.

Wow! So glad any of the negative reviews on here didn't deter our decision to stay. We had 2 rooms for our mom/daughter friend trip. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Frances who informed us our rooms were upgraded. We had one room in the Pool Villas and the other in the Ocean Villas. Both rooms were beautiful, large, and ground level. The hotel itself has a traditional Fairmont style decor (dark, wood) in the main lobby/casino area whereas the grounds look more like a modern resort (white, tropical). Although the two styles doesn't really match, we enjoyed the two vibes. We hung out mostly in the pool area where the pool bar was located. The area was a bit of a scene with party groups, DJ music, and overall energetic. There was another small pool and also a larger pool nearby, if anyone wanted a quieter space. It did appear that many non-hotel guests came in for the day pool party though (we didn't see any hotel guest stay verification to be on property). The beach was beautiful and calm. We only left the hotel a couple times and found Ubers easy to get to/from the Fairmont. Definitely recommend this hotel for adults, groups, or older families.

Beautiful location and several amenities. Some general feedback - staff was not real helpful (concierge and check in) - they seemed preoccupied and not interested in answering questions. We booked a beautiful room with a great view (even though the windows were extremely dirty). However, the bathroom was SMALL!!!!! We are used to larger bathrooms. Extremely limited storage space and only one person at a time could get ready. We told the staff that the outlet on the bedside did not work. They didn't seem concerned. Food - Service at all of the eating places was fantastic! Breakfast was great and varied! The chandelier lounge had interesting cocktails. Steakhouse was great, if overpriced.

This review is solely about the staff. Extremely friendly and helpful! Frances at the feo desk was exceptional and did everything she could to accommodate our requests. Not many folks with her customer service skills left anymore. Also have to mentol Miosotis in Housekeeping, she was exceptionally kind accommodating as well.

Definitely not 5 star quality. Our “ocean view” villa overlooked a pool not the ocean (villa 116) and was in serious need of an update. If you are looking for a party vibe, this will be enjoyable. If you are looking for a relaxing, peaceful experience, as we were, this hotel is not for you. The music was so loud (and bad, although I understand that is subjective) it was inescapable even in our room. Forget about an afternoon nap unless you bring ear plugs.

Beautiful property but run down. This used to be the Old San Juan and is an old hotel. You can tell Fairmont tried to modernize rooms but improvements are shoddy in rooms. Hotel hallway carpet looks worn and paint is poorly done. The bathroom is small, had broken shower valve and was not properly cleaned. The chaise in the room was stained. We called to complain but were told the hotel is fully booked and no other rooms were available. The lobby was quite busy and has a beautiful bar. But, the bathroom in the lobby had no napkins or soap. The trash can by the valet stand was overflowing with garbage. Overall, not what we were expecting for the price.

I have been coming to Puerto Rico for over 20 years. I am very familiar with all of the 4 and 5 star hotels in San Juan and only two of them do I return to again and again and the El San Juan Hotel is my number one choice in the city! The hotel has the best selection of pools in the city with excellent poolside service, great cocktails and the BEST FOOD. FYI the pina colada is real coconut and fresh pineapple and not packaged processed junk like at the competitor hotel we sometimes stay in too. The staff turns your towels for you on your chaise lounge chairs and they constantly come by to offer water and freeze pops to kids. I really never wanted to leave the pool, but I did occasionally to dine on Cana’s patio, which has a gorgeous view of all of El San Juan Hotels luscious grounds. Carolina Beach is swimmable, but you still need to pay attention to rip tide warnings if they are in effect. For this reason the El San Juan Hotel kicks the pants off of all the competitors in the Condado area, where drownings are a common occurrence amongst unknowing tourists. The beach here is more lively as you will find a mix of tourists soaking up the sun and locals enjoying the beach. The sand and water is typical of an Atlantic beach in southeast FL. The staff at the hotel supply clean towels and sunblock and will accommodate just about anything you ask for and really the only difference between the beach staff and the pool staff is you need to get up and ask for what you want. The hotel itself is a beautiful mahogany and crystal masterpiece. Having a drink in the lobby is almost mandatory at night where you can listen to the music of the live band at the Chico Club and soak up all the beauty of the chandeliers lit up. There are plenty of cozy spots to lounge and enjoy watching the band if the bar is not your thing. I’m not a big casino person so I can’t really comment either way on Foxwoods. As far is the rooms go, we stayed in the main tower on this visit and our room was tastefully decorated and spacious. I did notice a review complaining about the AC and while I agree the AC needs to allow stronger fan and lower temp, you really wont find great AC anywhere on the island in a hotel. It is a downside for sure and I would prefer to pay a little more for premium AC, which is an option at certain hotels. Other than that, the rooms are beautiful and very quiet and comfortable. The staff at the property went above and beyond with courtesy and trying their best to accommodate our every wish. Shirley at the front desk really stood out to us as she did everything she possible could to put a smile on our faces everyday. She was extremely attentive to my 9 year old and my elderly father with stage 4 cancer.
