I have stayed at this wonderful converted monastery four (4) times mainly in winter - fantastic atmosphere - and wow, the restaurant is the best food I have had in Hungary - and I'm a Australian and Hungarian national with lots of food local food experience.

Sopron is full of old charm and interest - it's a 10 minute taxi or bus trip from the monastery. I have tried hotels in town but this beats them all by a mile.

Thus is the place to come to recharge the batteries - relax - eat well and find peace - a place to stop and reflect on life.

Look at the photos - they are all accurate so I am not adding any of my own. Stay here is want something different and wonderful.

We have visited this place for a 4 day meditation retreat. The monastery is beautifully renovated fully marinating to old substance and hence the spirit of hundreds of years of contemplation. The rooms are simple yet luxurious and the kitchen is fabulous. Also test the local wines - you will be astonished. A great place to retreat & reflect.

We chose this plase in Sopron because we wanted to treat ourselves little bit and it was perfect choice. The place is extraordinary, the food was excellent and staff very friendly. We got corner room, which was very spacious. The furniture was new ¨with exquisite workmanship. The only one tiny thing which could be criticised is the access road which was really broken. Anyway, if you would like to have romantic weekend in a quiet place, I would recommend this place.

On our way around Neusiedler See we had a spontaneous idea to stay overnight somewhere charming Nearby, so we browsed and have found this place . The receptionist gave us a warm-hearted welcome and the dinner , wow, the menu was well-ballanced and the service was a a five-star plus, professional and yet very big- hearted. The service of both waiters was 100% synchronized. Obviously, served with white cotton gloves, we had a feeling we were some local gentry, perhaps the local Esterhazys a few hundreds years ago. The dinner was accompanied with masterpieces of classical music in the background of perfectly restaured ‘salle-a-manger’. The rooms were cosy while monastery authentic and very tasteful. Hope to come back one day. Thank you, guys!

We were really looking forward to have dinner at the restaurant of the Pauline-Carmelite Monastery of Sopron (Kloster Wandorf). The email exchange to make the reservation was welcoming and polite. Their website promised “sophisticated, healthy, and tasty international creations” and it had a few good reviews. Alas, the disappointment began with the small greeting for the kitchen which consisted of a small vinaigrette (?) and some olives from the tin. I had ordered a deer carpaccio as entre which sounded interesting but turned out to be a few small slices of cooked deer meet next to some salad leaves without dressing, the dish was sprinkled with salt. Next I had wanted to order the trout with potatoes - the only fish dish stated on the menu. I was informed that there was no more trout but that instead there was pike-perch. Fine. However I was quite surprised to see that instead of potatoes it came with a risotto. The pike-perch wasn’t all that fresh and the risotto very bland with a mild lemon flavour. My partner had a mango soup as a starter, which was cold but quite good, then a mangalitsa steak which turned out to be prepared like a schnitzel, quite greasy. The setting is nice but the dishes hardly keep their promise, so all in all this experience was rather disappointing.

We hadn't been to Sopron in over ten years, and were thrilled to see this new addition to the available hotels. What a special place, combining a luxurious hotel atmosphere including all amenities, with a peaceful and idyllic place for those looking for a spiritual retreat.

As Americans we would have never found this spot on our own. We were lucky to be with dear Hungarian friends who made all the arrangements. We loved learning the history of the building and are thrilled that it has been renovated and once again in use.

Our room was extremely spacious, and appropriately for a Monastery, sparsely furnished, but lacked nothing. The bath was very modern with every convenience.

The dining room was magnificent with a painted ceiling reminiscent of old churches and the food matched the decor. We had a wonderful gourmet dinner with gracious service. The buffet breakfast was also excellent.

I can only say wonderful things about this peaceful, calm and lovely refurbished monastery.

We found this hotel for a short stay after landing in Vienna airport (<1h away). It is a 18th century cloister refurbished superbly approx 2 years ago. Great simplicity but very modern comfort. The place is full of history. We got a very large room. Missed having a TV, but it is understandable as the hotel positions itself as a retreat (www.banfalvakolostor.hu). We were ther on one of the warmest day of the summer but the thick walls did well to keep out the heath even without air-conditioning.
